Just a reminder. Remember how everyone in Hollywood was fellating each other in joy over the news that Iron Man made $100 million domestic and $200 worldwide over its first weekend, as it broke several records and signified a stronger box office after a weak first quarter in 2008? Yeah, Grand Theft Auto IV made $500 million in its first week. That's more money than the entire GNP of several African nations, incidentally. I'm not sure, but I think if we run over the stockholders of GTA publisher Take Two with our cars, we can get our money back, too.

Considering that GTA costs generally 6 times as much as seeing iron man, about the same number of people bought GTA that saw iron man.

Almost.

1) In one weekend (two days) there were $200 million sales worldwide. For arguments sake, assuming $10 a ticket, that's 20 million tickets.

2) In SEVEN DAYS the game made $500 million. Lets argue $50 per sale for the sake of simplifying this. That's 10 million boxes.

Half the sales.

Ok, so lets take that 7 day thing and see what it did in two days. Weekends are generally better sales, but it launched mid-week, so it might be safe to simply divide. $500 million / 7 days * 2 days (aka "weekend") = ~$142 million.

Still not pulling down the same sales. And remember, if I want to go see Iron Man again, I need to pay another $10 or $20 for a DVD later, $50 for a BRD.

If I want to play GTA IV again, I need merely fire up my console.

Ultimately Iron Man will make more (remember, there's a game coming yet too!).

Now, if you want to show *profit*... that might be another thing entirely to see what the development costs of a blockbuster vrs a top-selling game might be...
