Ozymandias Action Figure with Real Bastard Power

Brilliant TR reader Tim just let me know about the above YouTube video, which claims to be a toy commercial from 1985, but might actually be a viral marketing attempt on behalf of the upcoming Watchmen movie. I'm not sure, though. I just hate to think they'd want to trick us like that. On a side note, that figure makes most Ken dolls look butch.

I don't know what the logo is on the kids shirt but I'm sure it would give away that the video is a bad atempt to make a fake 80s toy ad. If not the video just by itself.

Yeah, I don't believe wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt under a regular t-shirt was in vogue until the 90's. I call fake.

Besides oozing self-conscious parody (it's too low budget and chintzy to be an actual commercial), the whole thing has an early-nineties vibe. And looking past the VHS wear-and-tear effects, it's obvious it was filmed on low-end DV, probably as a cheap way of adding to the aged look. This reeks of a studio-made viral.

Why does it have to be a viral? This might be actual footage from the movie about the toys that Ozymandias actually produces of himself and others in the story.

Warner Bros. is doing a Watchmen commercial contest on one of the video sites...I bet this is one of the submissions.

Um, there's a contest on youtube to make a Watchmen commercial. The winners will be used in background tv's in the movie.
