Pegg and Sylar Talk Confusingly About New Trek Movie

Are some of you under the impression that J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie is a reboot, and not just a prequel? That's it's resetting the franchise? Well, knock it off. That's totally wrong. So says Simon Pegg, settling a dispute I had no idea existed. From AceShowbiz:

On Pegg's story, it is reported that the depicter of the younger version of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott has eliminated the question that the movie may be a reboot. Talking to Starlog Magazine, he explained, "I often see Star Trek being referred to as a remake, and it really isn't. It's another Star Trek film; it's another movie in the series. It's the continuing mission."

I had no idea anyone thought that Abrams and Paramount would have the insane balls to just start Trek over, but hopefully that settles that. But the weirdness isn't quite over, as Sylar—a.k.a. Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock—had this to say about where the new Trek movie fits in:

First is Quinto who revealed further information on his famous character, Spock. In a recent interview with CreationTV, the "Heroes" villain can be heard saying, "This story happens sort of irrespective of where the Spock we've come to know ends up." Highlighting the "irrespective" word he stressed on, some publication speculated that perhaps his Spock won't be the same as Leonard Nimoy's.

So is this an alternate universe Trek? Does it start a divergent timeline? When Nimoy makes his cameo, is he future Spock, or future Spock from another universe? If it's not a reboot, it has to at least start in the regular Trek universe, right? I'd like to think that this will have Trek fans up in arms, but between all the time-travel shenanigans and given how much contradiction their little universe already has, if there's any sci-fi franchise that can handle a divergent timeline, it's probably Trek. Anyone disagree?

Perhaps this is more of a "movie based on a television series" like what we got with The Brady Bunch Movie and The Beverly Hillbillies instead of a continuation of a franchise like the X-Files and, well, the first ten Star Trek movies. Nimoy could just be playing that "gratuitous original cast member cameo" that anyone who is still alive from the original cast seem to appear. That could explain Quinto's quote about Nimoy, although Pegg's referring to it as the "continuing mission" (which was not used until the movies).

While a movie, or a series, that continues the storyline of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT would be nice, I won't begrudge whatever this movie turns out to be (unless it's just a shit-poor job). I always have the DVDs of TNG and DS9 to let me relive the awesomeness of the series proper.

I suspect that there will be at least a mention--if not a flat out cameo--of one or more TNG or DS9 characters, just to screw with the fanboys if nothing else.

I take it as "This movie will have no lasting impact on any of the characters, and a big ol reset button will be hit at the end."

Also, to cummins, they did already establish Worf's ancestor in the sixth movie. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled some "Picard's grandpa" crap with this movie.

This only reminds me of dropped balls on Paramount's end for interesting franchise ideas. I can only imagine the fun that could have been had with a Temporal Investigations or Section 31 series.

Wouldn't it be crazy awesome if this new film was a Mirror universe film and they keep it a secret until release? God that would rock ten boners. At the end of the film Spock would bust out with a full goatee so you knew that his transition to evil would be complete.

I guess I don't quite fully grasp the concept of a reboot. Cuz if anyone thinks they aren't gonna milk this thing for it's worth, all the while rehashing previously used plot lines you are lying to yourself!

A DS9 themed movie would be nice, a second Dominion War or something, direct to DVD, I'd buy it.

I have been an on & off Trekker since the OS was first showing (when I was eight years old, eek), & have no trouble with a reboot, reinterpretation, etc. I just don't trust that hack in the designer eyeglasses to do anything but make a loud, urgent but ultimately tedious & nonsensical take on the material.

I agree with WEKS that it would be great to see some direct-to-DVD movies set in the Trek multiverse, but I doubt that Paramount would go for it ... they would see it as "cheapening" the value of the Franchise & putting it on a level with Babylon 5, etc. More's the pity.

It'll be just like the episode of the 70s cartoon (The Counter-Clock incident) where they went back in time and aged younger with each passing moment, then (unlike the cartoon) they will just stay young and the characters will have a chance to do-over their lives.

J.J. seems like a serious guy from all the interviews I have seen of him and I think he has a reverence for Star Trek. I think we will get something closer to a Wrath of Khan level of Drama or even more so. Its time for some real fiction that will actual mean something not just entertain.
