U.K. Toymaker Hears a Who (Fan's Lament)

Character Options, although they have a terribly bland company name, has been making swell Doctor Who figures for a couple years based on the last few cult-favorite and well-received Who series. So what about fans of the old, classic Whos? They've been ignored, as is just and right. However, Character Options is more kind and benevolent than I am, because they'll be releasing a new toyline of classic Doctor Who characters with modern sculpting and painting techniques, all the better to point out that early Doctor Who villains looked really fucking goofy. The wave includes:
• The fourth Doctor
• The fifth Doctor
• The sixth Doctor
• The SV7 Robot
• D84
• Zygon
• Magnus Creel and Mr. Sin
• The Sea Devil (he's the one that looks like a Admiral Ackbar in a mesh hospital gown)
If you collect all of them, you can build the extremely goofy looking D1 Robot. They'll be out in the U.K. this month, but I'm sure Diamond will be importing them soon enough. Thanks to Kevin for the tip.

Oh wow *drools* o.o Those look fantastic :D
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:30:22 PMI've sworn off new figures for over a decade but these will be my downfall. As hard as I want to fight it, I neeeeeed that robot build a figure!
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:33:33 PMI had no idea that John Tesh was once the Doctor.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:49:38 PMI can't believe you're totally dissing these. I'm not into toys, I only have two; one John Constantine action figure, (and believe it, it may be made of plastic, but acts better than Keanu Reeves! Natch!) and a Bone-one that came with the first issue of the colour reissue. But these figures are nothing short of amazing! They're way better than the official Tenth Doctor-figures, and you even forgot to mention that the Fourth Doctor comes in two varieties, one with ordinary frown, and one with his trademark manical grin! Oh, and be glad it's the Sea Devil. It could have been its incredibly crappy cousin, the Silurian.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 12:50:56 PMStrangest Doctor Who-thing ever: This week in Cardiff, Wales (where the programme is filmed), at a national Welsh-language event, kids were singing harp-accompanied poetry about Doctor Who: http://tinyurl.com/6htlaj
Posted 08/06/2008 at 01:14:59 PMYou probably don't speak Welsh, but if you listen you'll hear reference to the Tardis, Daleks, Davros and the Doctor.
I've never really watched older Doctor Who, just the new stuff, but those toys look ridiculously amazing. Maybe Hitchhiker's Guide toys next?
Posted 08/06/2008 at 03:13:15 PMnow THERE'S a fine idea, Zach!!!
Based on the BBC series, though.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 03:56:14 PMCharacter Options has done a fantastic job with the Doctor Who line. For years, the only Doctor Who action figures to be had were these piss-poor (but well-intentioned) toys made by DAPOL. So, these new toys are a dream come true. There's two other Classic Doctor Who releases out now - a Dalek boxset and a different 5th Doctor that was an SDCC 2008 exclusive and has the celery the general release version is lacking. As for the quality of the monsters in the actual old, limited budget show, well, fans just learned to enjoy it for what it was in all its campy glory.
Posted 08/06/2008 at 06:10:34 PMTom Baker looks insane. But I think that's accurate.
Posted 08/07/2008 at 07:12:39 AMThese are wonderful. It's a shame that Character Options doesn't have the license for Torchwood, as the figures for that show don't look as great as the Who ones do.
I echo Zach's hopes for Hitchhiker's Guide figures. Give us some Red Dwarf and Prisoner ones as well.
