There is a nerd war going on over the Watchmen movie; some are already to call it a masterpiece, and some have decried it for already selling out. As well know, there's an innocent, giant alien squid stuck in the middle. I'm trying to remain impartial, myself, mostly so people can say argue about it in the comments, but I will say that I think these six new character posters are definitely on the good/authentic/cool side. They manage to convey a great deal about each character and his/her personality with a striking pose, facial expression, and very apt quote. Agree? Disagree? More importantly, if you could only buy one, which one would it be? (Via /Film)

Interesting accident, to my eye: the 3 posters down the right side seem to have the better, more appropriate quotes. Ozy's quote is outright inaccurate (world is utterly NOT at peace in Watchmen universe!); Comedian & Dr. Man come off as contrived and shallow soundbites. Comedian's poster is sweet & catches his personality, if the quote was better. So, looses out. After that, it's a toss-up between Rorschach & Silkie. Love the grittiness of Rorschach's pose & setting, but Silkie does have very sweet assets to admire.

I'm going to have to agree with Friginator about the whole quotes thing. Putting quotations like that on the posters really makes the characters seem contrived and superficial. Still, the movie seems solid to me.

Dr. Man looks like one of those Blue Sun guys form Firefly

I have decided to be super excited for it regardless and only decide if it was fantastic or crap AFTER I have seen it. It is by far the easiest way to go about anticipating such movies. Even if it gets screwed up, I will probably still be minorly hurt but enjoy it none the less. As for poster I'm tracking down that Rorschach poster, it will be a ferfect addition beside my Dark Knight Joker poster I conned my boyfriend into buying me. He is in my opinion the most interesting character in the movie and the best costume. Before having gotten a chance to read the Graphic novel (which I consumed) that shot in the trailer of him with the flaming airosole can when he is getting away from the cops, I had to find out who it was and what his story was.

I wasn't using these posters as a way of condemning this movie. I was just using them as an analogue to how the creators seem to be handling the movie itself. The neon backgrounds DO remind me of Batman and Robin, though. Maybe I'm being too nitpicky, but I feel very strongly about this. Others complain about the "butchering" of Star Wars or Indiana Jones, but this is what I care about. Any other comic book movie wouldn't bother me, but for Watchmen, being "intense" is just trying to get my point across. I'm not sure if I've made myself clear: GAAAAAARRHHHHH! WHY ARE THEY MAKING THIS MOVIE?! WHY IS **ZACK SNYDER** MAKING THIS MOVIE?! WHY DID THEY LEAVE OUT THE SQUID?! WHAT'S WITH ALL THE NEON SFX?! WHY??!!! I hope I've made my point.

Geez, Friginator! Like it or not they have to sell this movie. The posters aren't bad, convey something of the characters and get people excited. Good. These are not well known characters who can carry a lack of intro. And yeah, I know it can be done, as far as this goes you are being a bit too intense. Just a comic book movie.

The resemblance to "Batman and Robin" is eerie. It's even got the same Smashing Pumpkins theme music.
-
Something about Nite Owl's pose throws it off, but in general those are pretty sweet looking :o

These posters for me are a good example of why I don't approve of this movie. This means the makers CLEARLY know the characters they're working with, but just don't care. Think about what these mean. Watchmen benefitted from having flawed, human characters whose personalities were more than just catchphrases. That's what set them apart from other superheroes at the time. They weren't just characters. They were people, and like people they couldn't be summed up in so few words. What people say does not define them. These Schumacher-esque neon-rubber posters actually make me feel worse about the movie. Apparently there IS something lower than rock bottom.

RORSCHACHZOMG

Ummmmm... who the fuck cares about the guys? Anyone? Goddamn, I would marry that poster of Silk Specter if I could..
-
I love that Dr. Manhattan poster it looks so bad ass, thats a sweet quote of his too though its kind of hard to read. Maybe I am just biased because he's my favorite character. I think I'm starting to accept the idea of Watchmen without the squid, though I love the bizarreness of it. I just hope the ending is on the same level and not just some lame explosions. I still have faith in the movie though.

Giant squid or nothing. Sure it was silly but it was our giant squid. You cant claim to be making a movie based on the book when you change the shocker of an ending. Why not have Romeo and Juliet live at the end? It wouldn't be such a downer. On the other hand. ZOMG RORSCHACH ON BIG SCREEN !
-
I am of the opinion that the squid, in the series, was pretty silly, so I would be happy if the squid stayed away from the movie. Either way, cant wait for the movie.
-
Comedian's is the most dead-on. But come on, like you have to ask? Three words: Silk Spectre's ass.
-
Ozymandias's costume doesn't bother me so much. It should be nice. He is super rich, after all. But I agree that Night Owl's does look a little too high tech. That said, if this I sit through this whole movie and there's no squid at the end, I'm taking my own life. Have I mentioned that?
-
Personally I'm all against the squid. I always thought that it was a shame that one of the most ambitious comics ever written ended with a giant exploding squid designed by a guy who wrote pirate comics (which Mr Moore was kind enough to share with us). Besides that I'd say Night Owl and Ozymandias are the only weak links here- they lack that middle aged underwear pervert look that most of the characters were meant to have developed by the 80s and look a tad preppie.

if i could only buy 1...Rorschach! i went as him for halloween...

I completely agree with Davelog--everything else looks so solid and faithful to the book. Changing the ending because of fears that a mainstream audience may not get the squid seems stupid to me. I am feeling my first bangs of trepidation about the film, it looks and sounds solid so far. But this changed ending hooha makes me nervous.
-
Rorschach seconded. Very disappointed in the direction they're going - or NOT going, rather - with the ending, but everything else looks solid. Dunno if it's a dealbreaker, but it definitely boosts my skepticism. I'll have to wait and see it.
-
Rorschach is my favorite of these posters. I do think the ending is going to be compromised without the sheer mindfuck that the squid provides. Mainly though, it would just be a great thing to see. Synder's downplaying of the book's ending is distressing, I think the reported revised ending won't have the same impact. Please, I want a squid.
