A few months ago, someone in Japan announced that Dragonball Z was going to go back on Japanese TV, but this time in high-definition. Other than the eventual raping of the U.S. DBZ fans, who will be asked to buy a fifth (sixth?) version of the anime -- I didn't think it was particularly newsworthy.

I'd imagine it would be very similar to the manga (prior to the Cell Saga). A good read, and very fast paced. It wasn't until the Cell Saga that he started slacking off and doing the same thing there. The Gohan/Cell fireball dealie was literally an entire issue of just two page panels of the fireball going back and forth with dialogue over it. After that it just got worse.

It's about time I heard some good Dragon Ball news. With the live-action coming out soon I was starting to drown myself in the old manga/anime just so I don't forget what the real one was like. Now I'll have new/old Dragon Ball Z episodes to make up for the new/worthless Dragonball Evolution movie. Exciting!

I have some mixed feelings on that. On one hand, it'll obviously made for a better story. That said, as a kid I really didn't mind how they stretched it out. It just meant more dbz, so I could watch it every day.

"I also assume that Japan's HD version will be better than Funimation's hilariously letterboxed DVD sets, which constantly crop out heads and faces of even speaking characters."
That's really unfair and an exaggeration.

O.M.G.
So no more 'we can stretch this 30 seconds in to 6 episodes'?!
It may only end up being 10 episodes long, but that 10 episodes will be animated gold.

Any chance they're going to redo the translation so the english voice actors will be giving an ACCURATE account of what is being said in japanese?

Actually, i've bought every one of these DVD sets, and the letterboxing is not even remotely close to bein even marginally bad as you make it out to be.
Nothing of any importance is EVER noticeably out of frame even right up to the 8th season it is released up to, ever. The actual width of what is cropped is an inch at the most. That's not very much, and the sides are now wider than the original release... far wider than the cropped tops and bottoms.
No, the letterboxing is NOT a problem with these sets, whatsoever.
What IS a problem is the DVNR process used to "remaster" it. DVNR is a process that anyone with half a brain in the remsetering business knows (or SHOULD know) will DEGRADE the outline quality of animated film.
Also, the color correction on the DBZ sets are ridiculously and horrifyinly godawful. Try watching the entire namak saga (Where they are on the gree planet for a long time) and you will see that skin tones turn ghostly white constantly due to their remarkabl(ly bad) color "correction"
Funimation honestly didn't know what the hell they were doing, and paid some assholes in Texas a shitload of money to run these episodes through a fucking computer that can't tell outlines from film grain and which turns the colors to shit.
Oh sure, I give them props for their outstanding dub, the multiple audio choices, uncensored footage, and layered angles of onscreen text....
But the widescreen isn't nearly as much an issue as digitally feeding it through a goddamn computer that belches back DBZ footage that looks like complete fucking shit.
Aside from Toriyama's great character designs, however, it's not like DBZ ever really had an emphasis on high art, or graphic design though, and it's a guilty pleasure at best due to it's rather (enjoyably) shallow plot structure.
But still... why try to "digitally remaster" somethin by feeding it through a computer that makes it look worse than ever? That's NOT how to properly archive and take care of classic animation, and it's sad that FUNimation, though understandably through their own ignorance, still pretty much fucked up the image quality seven ways form sunday.
Widescreen is the least of the worries with sets that have bizarrely over-saturated brightness and coloring fuckups with outlines that look like godawful photocopies whenever someone moves.
But even so, it's still worth buying at least to see the proper series run with all it's footage intact, if you have the time on your hands and then don't mind selling it to a used games store, for what is esentially a 30% refund.

I honestly DON'T.
That episode is one of the few times that entire series ever came close to bein pure genuis. That and the entire Great Saiyaman arc.
It always felt like a breath of fresh air in that show to see something other than it's painfully cliched self-stereotyping of stupid posturing, dead serious camera pans, standoffs and banter that somehow lasts for 15 minutes at a time, and repetitive reused fight animations.
DBZ was at it's best when it still exhibited a sense of humor and playfulness. Almost reminiscent of Toriyama's far superior Dragonball, god forbid. (A.k.a: Before the series jumped 9,000 sharks)
