As implied when we heard that Ben Reilly, the shockingly well-liked star of Spider-Man's not-shockingly hated Clone Saga, was returning to the Marvel universe, Reilly's bringing all his baggage with him and those bags are stuffed full of the mess known as the Clone Saga. Spider-Man: The Clone Saga #1 hits stores this September, written by Tom Defalco and Howard Mackie. Now, it will be a six-issue miniseries, which as Comics Alliance points out, makes it essentially meaningless to the current Spidey tales. Which is probably for the best. Potentially more important is the Marvel solicit itself, which says "Marvel's most controversial event of all time returns with a vengeance, presenting the Clone Saga as it was originally intended to be told!"
...huh?
So is this a retelling of the actual Clone Saga, but without all the bullshit? Or is Ben Reilly actually coming back? Is it set back in Spidey's '90s, or is it set now, post-One More Day? Does it really matter? I don't know, and if Marvel's telling, they ain't telling me. However, given how many of you guys were actually pro-Ben Reilly in the last article, I'm going to guess you're tentatively excited about this. Am I right?

i'm pretty sure this is going to be in the same vein as the X-Men Forever book that Chris Claremont is doing: re-telling an already-published story as the writer originally intended, before all the editorial BS turned it into a bloated, convoluted, mess.
this line of comics should basically be called Marvel's "What If: We Didn't Fuck This Up?"

X-men forever, seems liek it si going to be a mess, a mess that will cause me to waste $9 or so a month on.
At least if the Clone Saga redux is the same thing it will only be for 6 issues not 24.

Parker was a clone, Reilly was the real Spider-man: that's how the story was originally intended to end. Are the powers-that-be at Marvel really planning on going down that path, given the less-than-enthusiastic reception fans have given recent big storyline changes?

Forget the Scarlet Spider, when can we see the return of Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin? I know he's smarter than most any other villain, since he retired to a tropical island and just sits around smoking cubans, drinking booze and hanging around nekkid chicks, but still, he NEEDS to come back to NYC for some Hobgonliny goodness!

That's why, Bill- That's why. With Osborn and The Hood all over the place? Who Would want to get into all that?
And, this 're-telling' will be a nice diversion...from bringing back Ben Reilly. =^\

FUCKING MARVEL.
I stopped reading Spider-man the minute he decided to make a deal with the devil to turn back time 20 years to save a 900 year old woman. Yeah, erase my wife, my career, and my kid...so I can save an old bitch. RE-FUCKING-DICULOUS.
The Scarlett Spider was an abortion back then, and it will be again.
Joe Quesada is a worthless tool. Hate that motherfucker.
If it wasn't for Iron Man last year, I'd say that Marvel hasn't done a shitting thing worthwhile in over a decade.
The sooner Joe Quesada is beaten to death with a golf club and buried so deep in the desert that the buzzards won't find him, the sooner Marvel can be respectable again.

People aren't giving Spider-Man a chance. "Oh no, they got rid of the marriage!" It was a worthless sham of a marriage designed to get people to start reading in the first place. They've taken Spider-Man back to what it was supposed to be and people complain? I'm excited about the retelling of the Clone Saga, because it's intended to replace the original and bring it back into canon. I think they're planning on resurrecting Ben Reilly to make him a worthwhile character. If you don't want to read it, don't read it. Just quit complaining and let those of us who actually like and understand Spider-Man get on with our lives.

Okay, so after the last article you've realized that Ben Reilly is NOT hated. After this article are you going to realize that the Clone Saga isn't hated either?
The Clone Saga hatred is something that was generated by Wizard and people who didn't really read said Clone Saga jumped on the bandwagon. The majority of long time Spidey fans ENJOYED THE CLONE SAGA.
Please realize this.

I have to throw in and say that yes, One More Day was a shitty thing to do, and yes, it was handled poorly, but that everything SINCE then has been some of the best Spider-Man in the past 25 years. No kidding.
After One More Day, I swore I wouldn't buy another Spider-Man comic until they "fixed" it, but I was still reading them at the bookstore or library, and damned if the current team hasn't won me over.
I still don't approve of the "It's magic so we don't have to explain it" answer, and the idea of Peter Parker dealing with Mephisto for ANY reason, but I like the changes they made and I dig that he's acting like Spider-Man again.
Mary Jane actually WAS a drag on the stories; I just wish they'd had the balls to simply have them get a divorce and move on with their lives, or kill her off and be done with it.
And finally, I have to point out again that Ben Reilly is no longer the Scarlet Spider (technically, he's dead). That name (Scarlet Spider) is currently in use by a clone of MVP (from The Initiative) wearing a modified version of Tony Stark's "Iron Spider" costume.

Spider-Man clone thing is what made me stop reading Spider-Man, my favorite marvel character. It was a long, drawn out painful read that killed it for me.
I still can't read Spider-Man to this day, as it's almost like Marvel is saying "What can we do to get people to stop reading our comics?". And I've tried.
And I think Yellow Dart wins for the owning.

You've got a point. It hasn't been as good as it used to be. But I think they've managed to bring back the essence of the character that had been lost over all these years. And no, they really don't need a second Spider-Man, but we don't know what their plans are for Ben Reilly at the moment.
and yes, Yellow Dart does know what [he's] talking about.

I always though Spidey was more interesting when he was single, and that Mary Jane was a drag. But I think that if they split up, it should have been a real world depiction, not a magic deal with the devil.
And I enjoyed most of the Clone Saga, too, and thought the ending was a cop-out. It's amazing how the fun and unity people have dissing something can overwhelm the actual quality of the piece.

I quite liked the clone saga, thought it did drag on forever (which isn't really the creators fault - life of Reilly should be mandatory reading my in my humble opinion).
While I agree that OMD was a big stinking turd ASM has actually been pretty good the last few months and the teases for the future at wizard world have me pretty excited. The Gauntlet sound grand fun, I miss the classics!

I'm in the pro-Ben camp, and I'm definitely looking forward to this. I'd kind of prefer Ben coming back. While Spidey has actually been good as of late, if the writers don't care about canon (as shown with OMD), then I'm fine with breaking it to get Ben back.

I have always been a Spidey fan, from the late 70's, starting with Spidey Super Stories. I used to get it sporatically in the early 90's, and even when they did the whole "Return of peter's parents" crap. Once the Clone saga kicked in, I honestly could not wait for the next Spidey comic to come out again, to see what Mr. Reilly would do. I was CRUSHED when he was killed, as I didn't see a need to kill him. Just make him head back out on the road.......I for one was EXSTATIC when i found this at a comic shop, and I hope it leads to an ongoing Ben Reilly series. I stopped after the Clone saga, as the John Byrne Re-boot SUCKED. I started up again here and there, but the "One More Day" story killed Spidey for me again. THis will be enough to at least get me into a comic store again. Bring on the next 5 issues!
