If you're an MST3K fan, you've probably seen and were horrified by Hobgoblins, a low-budget Gremlins rip-off full of extra sleazy, unpleasant teens. Believe it or not, there is now a sequel and the little girl on the front cover hanging with the Hobgoblins is like my crack -- I know its bad for me, but I'm going to get it anyways. Ludicrously, the original Hobgoblins has a 20th anniversary DVD coming out today as well, if you want to watch it without the MST track. For some reason.
• Tom and Jerry: The Chuck Jones Collection
I know Chuck Jones is a cartoon genius, but I have always, always hated Tom and Jerry. Give me Wile E. and the Roadrunner any day.
• Death Note Re-Light Vol. 1
Much like The Plan, this is a new version of Death Note seen through the eyes of Ryuk. Except that it's mostly old animation. I loves me some Death Note, but I can easily take a pass on this.
• The Monster Squad: The Complete Collection
Not the awesome '80s movie but apparently a '70s Saturday morning TV series of the same name which I had no idea existed until 10 minutes ago.
• Dragon Hunters
Some CG straight-to-DVD fantasy that has strange good reviews on Amazon. Admittedly, one of those reviewers called himself "Rockin' Dad," though, so we can probably just forget about it altogether.

The Dragon Hunters link goes to The Monster Squad again. Not that that's bad for me.

I love Tom & Jerry, but never did like Chuck Jones' style when applied to the cat and mouse. Just seemed too loose, simplistic, and lazy (when compared to the old style, not his work overall).
Now Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner was better served by his style. Both are classic takes on the same concept of prey overcoming predator.
The only hope Hobgoblins 2 has is if the Holy Trinity of Rifftrax descend upon it and bless it with a riffing on par with the classic Hobgoblins MST3K treatment. I'm surprised Sloane didn't personally request for them to create a track and have it on the disk from the start.

I love Chuck Jones. I love Tom and Jerry. But Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry...those cartoons were HORRIBLE!!!!! Tom and Jerry peaked pre-1950...all their later stuff was just sad...the Chuck Jones years were the cartoon equivalent to the Fat Elvis Tour!!

Except with Tom & Jerry, Jerry was written as such an asshole that you wound up cheering for Tom.

I didn't think they were all bad.
"Year of the Mouse" actually had Tom win. It was Jerry and another mouse plying pranks on him until he gets them in the end.

I can only imagine what the plot of Hobgoblins 2 is if there's a little girl involved...

Is this the Dragon Hunters you're reviewing?
Been out for a few months - maybe a re-release?

THANK YOU! Until now, I thought only my brother and I believed that Jerry was such an asshole. Sure, there were a few episodes where he truly was the victim, but when you consider HE'S destroying the house, spreading disease, and practically stealing food, it's a wonder why anyone would ever sympathize with the cruddy free-loader.
Still, it is the Prey Overcoming Predator dynamic that people seem to always root for...assuming of course the prey aren't stupid high and horny teenagers.

I loved the original Monster Squad, I refused to see the movie until I got it out of the public library DVDs. It was actually pretty good (the movie) except for the "behind the scenes" with the guy that played Frankenstein's Monster, that was a freaky-ass dick...

MONSTER SQUAD!
Sweet! Thanks for the update! I have four crumby episodes on a bootleg disc!
This site is awesome as it tell me what I want to know, not what I need!
On my way to get this! Thanks!

I think the big difference between the Tom & Jerry and Roadrunner & Coyote dynamic is that the Roadrunner seems more like a force of nature who is totally oblivious to the Coyote's intention, while Jerry is a mean-spirited little fucker who enjoys inflicting pain upon Tom.

From a reader's review over on Amazon:
"Not to be confused with the 80s movie of the same name, "The Monster Squad" was a fond memory from my childhood. This 70s NBC Saturday morning show featured a pre "Love Boat" Fred Grandy as Walt, a night watchman at
a Hollywood-type wax museum who was also a criminology college student during the day. He built a "Crime Computer" to monitor police activity during his shift. The computer somehow brought to life the statues of the Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, and the Wolfman(not Laurence Talbot, but Bruce WW. The initials stood for WereWolf). To make up for past misdeeds, the three use their unique abilities to fight crime. The show featured "special guest villians" like Marty Allen, Alice Ghostly, Jonathan Harris, amoung others. If the show reminded you of the 60s "Batman" tv show, that's because both shows were produced by the same people."

Chuck Jones T&J were a different flavor than the older ones, but I still liked them. One of my faves opened with Tom singing Santa Lucia, and Jerry singing the same song but in gibberish.
Umm...you have to see it.

I have never heard of the 70's Monster Squad series either. At first I thought you were talking about "The Drak Pak", an 80's Saturday morning Cartoon that featured young monsters that fought crime. Anyone remember that one?

At least the Chuck Jones Tom and Jerry shorts were better than the shit Gene Deitch did.
But they're still not as good as the Hannah-Barabera shorts.
Everything after Jones is just as bad, if not worse, than the Deitch stuff...

Some of you guys should know.....
Jones once made a comment about his work on his T&J episodes.
He basically (Paraphrasing from memory as I can't remember the actual quote) said that he didn't like his work on them, nor how they turned out.
He mentioned that he just turned to what he knew about chase-style cartoons, and that the end result was too much like a self-plagiarism of his Coyote and Road Runner shorts.
And it shows. You can also see the few times he tries to shake things up by adding other elements, but they usually come in out of the blue or make little to no contextual sense.
They really were subpar to the vastly superior MGM 40's Hanna-Barbera shorts. I don't expect this DVD will sell very well.

The classic MGM Tom & Jerry stuff is amazing. And yup, Jerry is very much a little bastard and instigates much of their battles. The Chuck Jones T&J stuff was just a terrible failed experiment. Love Jones and his work but he was a bad match for this cat & mouse.
