This has been circulating about over the weekend, but if for any reason if haven't watched John Hodgman's magnificent address at 2009 Radio and TV Correspondents' Dinner yet, where the PC, among other things, quizzed the president about Conan the Barbarian and the sandworms of Dune, you must. You simply must. Not because it's concrete proof that Obama is our first nerd president (and let's not turn the comments into an Obama love or hate fest, please) but because Hodgman's speech is funny, insightful and more than a little brilliant. If you're a nerd -- and by coming to Topless Robot I'm going to go out on a limb and say you probably are -- you absolutely have to watch this video. Yes, all 15 minutes.

This is exactly why those Mac vs. PC ads backfire on Apple so egregiously. No one on earth except people who already own Macs like the Mac kid more than Hodgman - he's just too personable.

Oh, and I think Obama's geek cred was proven when he made the Jor-El joke at the Al Smith Dinner. This is just icing on the cake.

You know you are a nerd if as you watched the video while Hodgeman was taking his pull off the inhaler you were thinking, "Shai-halud, a thumper, and The water of Life."

Brilliant speech.
I love the table at 3:48 who are obviously pissed off at what Hodgman is saying.

Truly, a masterpiece of rhetoric... So happy that this exists! I was hoping Obama would answer the Dune question though... I already knew the answers as Hodgeman was listing off the questions. Baaaaw!

Is Obama the first Kwitsatz Haderach or the second? Does that mean Sasha or Malia is going to turn into a giant worm?
And doesn't the Kwtisatz Haderach bring his people into Jihad?

While awesomely presented, I got a bigger laugh at the crowd panning shots that showed how bored everyone there was.

A true sign that Hodgman really got what he was talking about--the real nerds/geeks who love this are here on the Internet. We don't have time for social functions! There's computing to be done!

I didn't vote for him, but damn this is great. I love Hodgeman and seeing Obama give the Vulcan Salute made me giddy. Marvelous.

That was just beautiful. I really hope Hodgman finishes up the audiobook of his latest pretty soon. The first audiobook he did was just amazing, and even better than the already good book.

What kinda bugs me is that he didn't mention Star Wars or Doctor Who. Ah, well, you can't win em all.

I was linked to this on twitter on Saturday by Jonathan Coulton, and my only disappointment is the lack of a JoCo reference.

I was a PC geek, then switched to Apple, then recently switched back to PC... Does that make me MORE or LESS geeky?

Shai-hulud - Thumper - Water of Life.
Love the fact he called out serious Sci-Fi like Dune and not the commerical crap like SW.
