Yet again: If you ever, ever wonder why the tagline for Topless Robot is "nerd news, humor, and self-loathing," please watch the above video. It should answer the question quickly and efficiently, almost... like a... like a lightning bolt. May the great Mystra bless neutral good TR commenter Mount Prion for the link.

At my old job we'd play that at least once a month to remind us who our best costumers are. The Wife and I also use it for the LARPers at Renn Faires...

Much like people that play airsoft, there is so much about this I don't understand. For example, how do you know when you're supposed to die?

The video is a disgrace... Everyone knows lighting bolt has a 2 second cast time with a 3 second cooldown...

I LARPed in college, and we had a very specific set of rules for spells and how much damage a player could take before death. I usually used either two swords or a two-handed hammer and left the spellcasting to those with more patience (unlike how I am in P&P RPGs). It was fun, but nobody yelled spell names, and dressing up was optional. It was a good way to pass the time on weekends.

Hey, don't knock 'em for having a good time. They're enjoying themselves and don't care how it makes others think about them, and I have a lot of respect for people who can manage that.

Generic music and cheap special effects make that ten times better. Shameful x 10 still equals "way not awesome" but whatever.

Who compared this to Airsoft?

He didn't compare it to Airsoft, he just said that, like airsoft, he doesn't understand how to score it. I would compare it to Airsoft, however, being as they're both people dressing up in costumes and pretending to fight.
Also, I love this site and all, but every once in a while I see something like this, and get a little confused. I mean, this is, like, 8 years old. It's hilarious, but pretty much anyone who visits a site like this has seen it.

Yeah, I love the cheerleading section in that one. Old or not, it's always fun/embarrassing to watch.
Also, was the airsoft video posted to show that it's better than LARPing or the same? I really can't tell. I'll tell you one thing, I'd make fun of either group with the same amount of amusement. Both groups are retahded if they take any of this stuff seriously.

I'm aware of LARPing, but... I'm not the only one who can turn my nerdom off at the door and if he's going to play something on the weekend, it's tennis / golf / road hockey / etc, right?
Then again, the most RPG-heavy thing I ever did was play Chrono Trigger, and I never caught the D&D bug.

I loathe LARPing. It's why people get a totally wrong impression of role-playing games. It's what made Rona Jaffe write that terrible "Mazes & Monsters" which panicked my generation's parents into not allowing D&D in the home. It's also not what RPGs are all about.
Sure, I used to do this sort of thing... When I was 11 years old. Only then it was done on the playground, and I always played Han Solo, or one of the indians, because I had dark hair.
Playing a variation of cowboys & indians when you're a child-- No problem. Doing it when you're in your 20s or older? Groan-worthy and embarrassing. When you have friends like this, it makes it hard to get people to take you seriously... and it limits your dating pool to other LARPers and cosplayers.

The airsoft is lame, too... But they're not nerds. They're spazzes.
I'm a geek and proud of it. I don't play this dress-up crap. I have geek interests, but I'm not going to immerse myself in it to the point of being embarrassing.
The LARPers and cosplayers are nerds, dorks, and dweebs. They apparently have no ability to be embarrassed.
The airsoft players, civil war reenactors, body-painting sports nuts, and other "macho"-oriented enactors are spazzes. They, too lack the gene which controls "toning it down" but they do it with things that don't SEEM nerdy (but, in fact, are in their own way).

Oh Gods, I think this is the group I used to LARP with. Fun times, fun spells. Yes, some of you hate it, but it's really a fun way to let off steam after a long week at work and game with your friends at the same time. It's certainly healthier than sitting in front of a PlayStation munching on chips and soda.

This is the same problem I had as a kid playing imaginery war. How do you decide who's hit? In my schoolyard games everybody always refused to play dead and it just turned into a fight over the rules. The solution was of course Lasertag. These people need LaserLARP. A nice, non-painful way to indicate all those lightning bolts hit something.
