Weird. Apparently Disney was planning on making an animated version of Maurice Sendak's children's classic Where the Wild Things Are in 1983, and just now about 20 seconds of animation for the tanked movie has surfaced on the infonet as part fo some documentary. The early '80s were not Disney's strongest time, but at least if it had been released it wouldn't have had all the incredibly forced musical numbers and comedian voice actors of the '90s films. Still, I'm perfectly happy to wait for Spike Jonze's version in a few months. Thanks to MyNoNos for the tip. (Via I Heart Chaos)

It's a test animation done by glenn Keane and John lasseter, done when they're still working together at Disney in the early '80 , to be shown for Disney execs and not for public viewing.
It a test to show the use combining 2D animated characters in a 3D environment. At that time it was groundbreaking with the use of the most advance computer system available.

I remember seeing this test footage aaaaages ago, way back when I was living in South Africa. I believe it was part of some documentary that showed clips of Disney's classic movies, though I'll be damned if I can remember what the point of the documentary was.
What I find interesting about this test was how it blended 3D environments with 2D hand-drawn characters...and even though it's old, it still looks more fluid and dynamic than Titan AE.

Holy moley, I saw a picture of that vector test FOREVER ago, probably not long after it was done. I think in the defunct magazine Videogames Illustrated, which was fond of printing rumors about a sequel to "Tron". Anyone ever heard the title "Warrior Tron"? In that early script, Tron was supposed to have taken over the MCP's role. I'm guessing that hilarity ensued.

After finding out that John Lasseter directed the test CGI, I think it could have been pretty cool. Lasseter, for the maybe two people here that don't know, went on to direct Toy Story 1&2, a Bug's Life, and Cars for Pixar.
If I couldn't have Spike Jonze making Wild Things, I'd happily accept Lasseter as a replacement.

Cool that the layout for the house was pretty much Sid's from Toy Story! Guess Max grew up to be a toy murderer....

It's very cute and well done looking (especially for the time.)
Of course I'm still psyched beyond belief for Spike's version!

Hmmm...a previously not (widely) known experimental Disney adaptation of a famous work, using what was unusually cutting-edge technology for the time, using an unknown director who'd later become famous for his work in CG movies?
And the computer work was done by a company called "Magi"?
Okay, who sent the time traveler back to 1982?

That's pretty good CG for the early 80s."
Seconded, I didn't even know they were that advanced with CG in '83. Compare this to Tron from '82, considered state of the art at the time.

Ah yes I remember seeing this on DVD and freaking out at that there had been a possible Where The Wild Things Are movie way back when, but I too will be just as happy to have Jonze's rendition too.
Having read one of the script drafts I am hyped on what was cut, and what was left in.
