MC Sagan Puts the Cosmos in Its Place

By Rob Bricken in Nerdery
Monday, Nov. 30 2009 @ 5:00PM

Symphonies of Science has released its third Sagan-tastic autotuned music video, titled "Our Place in the Cosmos." It contains sound clips from (according to Geeks Are Sexy):
• Carl Sagan's Cosmos
• Richard Dawkins' Genius of Charles Darwin series
• Dawkins' TED Talk
• Stephen Hawking's Universe series
• Michio Kaku's interview on physics and aliens
I think this might be my favorite one yet. I'm generally a pretty pessimistic guy, but these videos just make me feel so damn good about the human race and the universe in general thanks to the personality, power, and dope rhymes of Carl Sagan. Luckily, this feeling only lasts until I have to post Fan Fiction Friday and I begin wishing for the end of humanity and existence once again.

Douglas Adams' Bathtub Is For Sale

Seriously. It's on ebay right this very minute. As of the time of this article's posting, it has two days left on auction, and it's going for 565 pounds, or about $930. The ebay listing says that Adams would always take baths when he needed ideas for his books, and this is that bath -- I can't find any corroboration for that, but I swear I remember reading an article with Adams once where he mentioned the bath thing, so I'm saying it's true. And $930 for the bathtub that may have spawned Arthur Dent and the galactic necessity for towels? That's a fucking steal, although the fact you have to pick it up -- assumably in England -- is likely part of the reason the price is still so low. The winning bid will be donated to rhino saving, which is good, but I can't help but wish it was for dolphins or sperm whales, don't you?

Big Lob, Triumphant

It's taken 22 years, but one Real American Hero has finally gotten his due. Big Lob, the sports commentatin' Joe from G.I. Joe: The Movie, will receive his first action figure ever when he's made as an exclusive for the 2010 Official G.I. Joe Collector Club. Two things: 1) like many people, I find it odd that Big Lob never had a figure, as he was significantly less goofy than several Joes that made it to toy shelves, and 2) the other exclusive figure is a 12-inch Joe who looks kind of like Justin Timberlake from the "Dick in a Box" video, so I'm not bothering to show him but you can check him out over at Poe Ghostal.

Jonah Hex Casts a Spell on Me

Look at him, from this now promotional shot from the movie! That manly chin! His rough stubble! His horrific scarring on the left side of his face! Why, anyone would swoon as long as they have a penchant for disgusting disfigurements. Seriously, he's looking pretty good. I wish I could see if he has his crazy eye, but since they went ahead and gave him the scars, I going to assume he does. Not much sense in having one without the other, although sillier things have happened in comic movies. I guess we'll find out for sure when Jonah Hex rides on June 18th next year. The Legendary Distractions of Link

Sure, Link needs to defeat Ganon and rescue Princess Zelda. Just as soon as he does a bit of fishing. And run some errands for the villagers. And hit bushes for money. And, most importantly, catch a few chickens. Thanks to RobRobot for the tip.

New Lost Commercial Es Loco Bueno

By Rob Bricken in TV
Monday, Nov. 30 2009 @ 11:15AM

The sixth and final season of Lost doesn't begin until February, but that hasn't stopped me from getting my panties in a bunch, nor has it stopped Spain from promoting the show, which is called Perdidos over there. /Film found this commercial which takes a chess game metaphor and makes it so crazy awesome that I no longer think I can wait more than two months for a new episode. I think I'll try and pass my time by making a "Team Jacob" shirt but starring Lost's Jacob, and then taunting all the Twilight nerds. My ensuing recovery time in the hospital will make the next two months speed by!

Crysis, Now with 1.21 Gigawatts

I don't play Crysis on PCs or consoles, but when catching up on the nerd news from the T-day break, I had to show you guys this mod for the shooter. Not only did this dude add the time-traveling Delorean from Back to the Future, he managed to get the game to switch from day to night every time it reaches 88 miles per hour. That's in addition to the electrical effects straight out of the film, as well as the burning tire tracks, of course. But my favorite is the fact that when the car "returns," it's covered in ice. It's crazy. Doc Brown would have to approve. thanks to Halfazedninja for the tip.

Smallville's Got 99 Problems But Dr. Fate Ain't One

Entertainment Weekly released some new pics of some of the JSA members scheduled to appear on the Smallville "movie event" due in January, and since it includes the first good look at Dr. Fate and the first look period at Stargirl, well, here it is. I have to admit, Dr. Fate looks sharp. Stargirl looks like she bought her costume at one of those seasonal Halloween stores, especially next to Dr. Fate's get up. Again, though, this shot seems to lend credence to the theory that the JSA members are supposed to look more traditionally superhero-y than Smallville's normal take; I'll try to refrain being a bitch about it until I can judge how well it does or doesn't work in action.

Oh, and here's a shot of Michael Shanks as Hawkman, which I've included because it does make Hawkman's costume look much better than the mid-flight pose I posted earlier. Knowing that the other JSA members look almost as goofy as he does helps him considerably, I think.

Don't Stop Mario Now

By Rob Bricken in Nerdery, Video Games
Monday, Nov. 30 2009 @ 9:04AM

Remember those "Automatic Mario" videos from a little while back? Where folks would program an elaborate Super Mario World level that would send Mario from one end to another, using the sound effects of the game to make music? Well, the reason people quit -- I assume -- is because they heard this video was coming out -- a four-part monstrosity of awesomeness covering Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now." Yes, four Mario levels have been synched to make the song, and not just with music, as you'll see if you watch the whole thing. Thanks to Luke W for the tip.
