I love Star Trek but hate MMOs, so I think they cancel each other out to a "meh". It's nice to see they're ignoring the Abrams movie and carrying on with the TNG era.
-
To be fair, the MMO being set after Nemesis was set up before the movie's timeline was set up. It also makes it easier to add ships to the game since a large amount have already been designed in the shows/movies for the original timeline. (And there are plenty of us that give a shit about the original universe.) Also, have any of you played Vex Xiang's Flash Star Trek games? Not only are they some of the best Star Trek games I've played, they're also some of the best flash games I've played.
-
It looks terrible. Why? Mainly because its set in the Star Trek "Prime" universe after Star Trek Nemesis and the disappearance of Spock, when the only Trek most of us give a shit about right now is the rebooted, "Alternate Reality" TOS Trek.
-
Looks just like every other Trek game ever made. Except I suppose the fact that you can walk around in this one. Which doesn't really make it any better.
-
@Bill Binder Ohh, that was a pretty good one, wasn't it? Pretty much everything else after that has been terrible...
-
I think it's already been said exactly why this will be nothing more than another typical MMO with pretty ships. World of Warcraft to Pirates of the Burning Sea to Champions Online, the MMOs are all the same thing: they pander to the obsessive compulsive in all of us that force us to make things look pretty and get to a higher echelon. Want a better ship? Grind for it. Want to blow things up? Go do it cause it's probably part of the grinding. There's not going to be anything new here, unfortunately. The only difference between this one and World of Warcraft is that this is the Sci Fi version. Being new and interesting died a long time ago when it came to these games...nowadays, it's all a matter of copying as much as someone possibly can from the competitors in hopes that the name will carry the game into profitability. No plot, no real story...just eternal side quests and nothing resembling a metaplot. What I wouldn't give for something with at least a modicum of difference.

@briskimj To answer your rhetorical question, probably the last good Trek game I played was "Judgement Rites" in 1993 (on CD-ROM!)
-
rockpapershotgun has had nice things to say...But, its a grind based MMO model, but with star trek feel.
-
I find it somewhat interesting that it's a continuation of the "regular" Star Trek franchise, versus the reboot that the recent movie gave us (which I certainly hope they stick with).
-
OH MY GOD AND SWEET BABY JESUS!!!! THAT LOOKS....exactly like a MMO. Eh. Plus its set in post-Nemesis Trek. Now if it was TOS and I could fly around hitting on chicks in mini-skirts and sleeping with Green Aliens....you know what? Just remake the Leisure Suit Larry games with a Star Trek theme and Kirk in the main role. That I'd play.

There is a video at Ign on the history. Basically its Klingons going ape shit and tearing it up. The game looks cool but it doesn't have what I want. I just really want to make long diatribes on the nature of truth and how many lights there are. That or play as Section 31. And good Trek games: Starfleet Command Elite Force
-
I want to be Changling or an Andorian.
-
Wow, it's like I was transported into Michael Bay's head for 35 seconds. This trailer makes no sense.
-
Erk post got cut and i cant be bothered to retype it :( Point was, there was storyline to the battle I played and it wasn't just Star Fleet going all American and blowing shit up for the hell of it.
-
This video is clearly just a random battle scene, we don't know whats gone on before this. The space battle I played, there was a cutscene just before I got to control the ship. Pretty much the Romulans (I think it was the Romulans, there were so many games that day I lose track >.<) said "Hey, go away. That? No that's not a fleet of our ships bearing down on this poor defenceless planet. You shoulda gone to Specsavers". So I(we/the player/whatever) was ordered by Star Fleet to defend the planet.
-
Looks like it has potential, but for now, I thought the graphics weren't that hot, and too much space battle for star trek. I want Olympus Gods, damnit!
-
I don't know what to think yet. It looks like any other MMORPG so far. And I really agree with what front toward everybody said. The Federation wouldn't go around blowing everything up. If they add some kind of diplomacy and problem solving then it might even out.
-
I actually had a chance to play this not long ago at Eurogamer. It was only a pre-beta version and there were only two parts to it (one space battle and one quick recon mission on foot), but from what I played, it was actually shaping up to be a great game.
-
I hope this turns out not just good, but great! I mean really, for those of us who have loved this series, when was the last time you could say you played a good Trek game? I'm just hoping this is better than that crap Mad Doc gave us a few years back. The preview here almost looks like the previews from Star Trek Legacy. It looked epic at first, but the game was just riddled with bugs and horrible controls. I'll probably still buy this in sheer hope that Trek can be reborn.
-
There's no reason why they can't expound on the greatness of space socialism and the potential of humanity and also have cool space battles involving dozens of ships.
-
In the age of SAW, and 24, triumph by expounding on the greatness of space socialism and the potential of humanity, is too tame.
-
Seems pretty violent by Trek standards. I thought I was supposed to triumph by expounding on the greatness of space socialism and the potential of humanity?
-
Well, I have a very good understanding of Star Trek, and whilst the graphics here look meh, what I saw looks pretty cool.
