DC Showcase - The Spectre: The first animated short in the all-new DC Showcase series focuses on a detective story with an ethereal twist, featuring the otherworldly character originally introduced by DC Comics in 1940. The short is written by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), and the voice cast includes Gary Cole (Entourage) and Alyssa Milano (Charmed).Nice! I think this is a great idea -- make shorter cartoons of the lesser known heroes and include them as extras to the main titles. That's a great value for fans and an even better way to get new audiences acquainted with DC's lower tier of heroes. I imagine Marvel will have to follow suit as soon as they can, and if they don't, they really should.
Oh, the Blu-ray will also include the live-action pilots for the Wonder Woman and Aquaman TV series -- the Aquaman one being the failed spin-off from Smallville from 2006. I know it was released on iTunes, but I think this is the first time it's coming out on any kind of disc, right? I guess the Wonder Woman is the '70s show, but I really hope it's the '60s Batman spin-off disaster. Everyone needs to see that at least once. (Via The Blu-ray Blog)

I believe that Aquaman has been released on DVD before but it was a bonus disc at Best Buy - it was packaged with Smallville DVDs.

Actually, the "Mercy Reef" pilot (aka the Aquaman pilot) was included with Smallville Season 6 DVDs as a bonus, at least at some retail outlets. I've got a copy of it sitting on my shelf as I type this.

Neat - sort of like how they included the Batman / Catwoman short on the Mystery of the Batwoman DVD.
Hopefully there's some whacky ironic punishments in animated form.

I love the idea of them doing additional shorts with each release. I'm not really a Steve Niles fan, but I do like the Spectre and I'm still really excited about this. Can't wait to see which characters they choose in the future.

This is definitely a step up from the Justice League episodes they usually include. Nothing against the Justice League, but most everyone has seen those already. Something new is appreciated.

if nothing else the spectre short should be considered a test run for an animated version of kingdom come. the short letting the dc brain trust get dcs wrath of vengence look right so they can then get to do kingdom come in the future

Also I'm a big fan of the Spectre specially since the great John Ostrander/Tom Mandrake's criminally underrated run of the 90s. Hope they get the Spectre right, that means a lot of cruel and ironic punishments from the spirit of vengeance himself, hehehehehe.

I just learned that they had previously, back in the summer, announced a Jonah Hex animated short written by Joe Lansdale. Also to accompany the DC Animated DVD releases. So I'm not sure how Spectre got bumped up in front of Jonah Hex, but I am glad they are for sure planning others for the future.
