No, he's not been sent to Marvel and he's not suddenly gay (although either of those would be kind of awesome, you have to admit). No, long-time Green Lantern Guy Gardner -- best known as the asshole who got clocked by Batman that one time -- has been traded to the rage-filled Red Lanterns, or will be shortly at some point in this Blackest Night hoo-hah. DC's Source blog posted this (hilariously done in magic markers for some reason) pic of Guy in his new duds, and left us to speculate over why he's made the switch. My guess is that Guy is tired of Hal Jordan being the most boring yet popular DC superhero, even when he's dead -- I know I am, and I don't even have a power ring.

guy deserves the spotlight finally. he is without a doubt a character that has infinite possibilities!

GARDNER DESERVES TO SHINE. NOW IS THE TIME TO FINALLY PUT HIM IN THE SPOTLIGHT. HE HAS THE HISTORY. MAKE HIM ONE OF THE GREATS WITHOUT DILLUTING HIM AGAIN.
-
GUY GARDNER IS ONE OF THE BEST CHARACTERS IN THE DC UNIVERSE WITHOUT HIS OWN BOOK. WHILE I TRUST JOHNS WRITING I'D BE GREATLY DISAPPOINTED IF GARDNER FALLS FOR SHOCK VALUE. GARDNER DESERVES TO SHINE WITHOUT HAVING TO DIE OR BE CORRUPTED. I MYSELF HAVE BEEN A HUGE FAN OF HIS AND ACTUALLY JOINED HIS SHORT LIVED FAN CLUB THAT CONSISTED OF ABOUT 12 PEOPLE ALONG WITH A WRITER OR ARTIST THAT WAS ON HAWKMAN. JOHNS THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO REALLY PLACE GUY INTO THE SPOTLIGHT WITHOUT KILLING HIM OR MAKING HIM EVIL. BY DOING THAT I BELIEVE THE GATES WOULD OPEN TO SEE A HERO SHINE ON PURE WILLPOWER TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT OTHERS CANNOT. I TRUE EVERMANS HERO!

Actually, I'm personally hoping that he takes on the Red Lantern role simply for the sake of beating the Black Lanterns. I have to also admit I can't wait to see how his attitude is affected by the red ring.
-
can't find n-e solid pics but it looks damns similar too "Wild Daigo" / "Brainwashed Daigo" from DC's "Project Justice" AKA Rival Schools 2... red glow n all looks like other biz too but that's what pops into my mind immediately
-
Guy Gardner, gay? No one would be man enough for Guy. I mean geez, his name is the closest you can get to Man without being ridiculous. Now if he gets his hands on a Sinestro ring again, he can play traffic light!
-
@Eye-Roller Lass: Guess it's kind of karmically appropriate that it's his turn to get fridged... @jamese: I wouldn't count this as more shitting on the JLI just yet, unless Guy ends up dying or being permanently evil or something.
-
I think Bruce Wayne being alive, but somewhere else, was established by the last panel of Final Crisis. How long they take til he comes back, I don't know. Just got GLC, and yeah, I saw Kyle died and the confirmation from his ring. That really sucks. At least he went out saving everyone. Now I just hope they don't make him a Black Lantern...say he died knowing he'd die and is at peace, like with the Doves in Titans. I'm half-expecting John Stewart to become a Blue Lantern, by the by. After his interaction with the blue ring before, it seems logical. That'd also leave us with just one Earth GL, Hal, with Kyle dead and Guy a Red.
-
Prediction: Darkest Night crossover ends. Magic re-set button is hit (my money is on a White Lantern). All dead "title" characters are alive, including Bruce Wayne and Kyle Rayner. Hal Jordan remains most boring character in the DCU, followed by Barry Allen.
-
After this, he's going to come out of the closet and join the Pink Lanterns, whose rings are powered by FABULOUS!
-
If Guy is goig red and the blue light can override the red lantern's effect, my guess is that either: a)Kyle's spirit/energy/something becomes a blue lantern/living embodiement of hope/etc. and frees him; b)Ice becomes a blue lantern or at least plays an important role on Guy's comeback. I just hope she makes it alive. I hope.
-
dear DC comics: please stop ruining guy gardner. thank you. p.s. if you could stop shitting on everything that happened in JLI and all the characters that are only still popular because of said book, it would be appreciated.
-
Besley: in other words, overpriced magic markers. Gotcha.
-
It's unlikely that they used magic markers in that picture. They probably used either Letraset or Tria markers, commonly used by artists for storyboards and designing characters, objects, etc.
-
@Eye-Roller Lass: I thought the same thing about the trolls. I wouldn't be surprised if they all came from the same person.
-
Goddamit, put more space between your Spoiler Warning and your actual fucking spoiler, asshat!

I Tora dies just to piss off Guy, I'll start making mine Marvel. Better yet, Dark Horse. And store my entire DC comics collection inside an old refrigerator, since they seem to like those so much. Now, Kyle's dying? Shucks. Look, I love Hal. I had a poster of him framed just the other day, but even as a Green Lantern fan I don't think he's all that. And yet, given the undying love of Geoff Johns for him, I'm actually surprised Kyle made it this far; Can't have another pretty boy to compete with his beloved-and-not-at-all-mary-sue Jordan, can't we? I'll miss Mr. Rayner, though. It may take ages for him to get better. Is it me, or those homophobe trolls sound(read?)awfully alike? Well, who cares.
-
Hold up. Those are Griff Tannen's boots. THOSE ARE F*%$ING GRIFF TANNEN'S BOOTS! AWERSUM.
-
Wow, lots of homophobia running rampant in the comments over a joke. Lovely. Who really thinks this costume is badass? A lame costume for a pretty lame character. Nothing new for Gardner.
-
We know why the op said the gay comment but it was quite odd and sick that he thought it would be ''Awesome'' if he were gay. Who the hell would think it would be awesome that he plays hide the sausage with a guy?
-
what is with everything being gay? who gives a crap about gay? it would be funny if he turned out to be a homo though. he is such a terrible character so he might as well come out of the closet and suck even more....literally
-
And for the record, I'm pretty sure being gay or being sent to Marvel were referring to the title: "Green Lantern Guy Gardner Plays for the Other Team."
-
Guy Gardner suddenly becoming gay would be pretty funny, actually. And I still maintain that DC should bring Pink Kryptonite back. Best issue ever.
-
Wow Guy Gardner is actually cool? How awesome haha. I agree with the above posters about it NOT being awesome if he were gay. What is up with everyone becoming gay and suddenly cool? Apparently I must be from a small city because around here we don't like gay comic book characters, wait I'm not from a small City I'm from New York City were that sucks! Seriously I don't think I could enjoy a superhero anymore if he just decided that the ladies wasn't his cup of tea anymore and he preferred what the boys had haha.
-
wow the op says it would be awesome if he were gay? Are you serious? Are you gay? How would it be awesome if he were gay? It's like ''what a terrible character, oh wait he is gay? How awesome that he prefers men lol'' Sometimes I wonder about Topless Robot. Maybe it should be called Jockless Robot.
-
No, he's not been sent to Marvel and he's not suddenly gay (although either of those would be kind of awesome, you have to admit). No, not really.
-
Damn, I had $20 riding on Guy joining the Star Sapphires. He was always a crankypants, sure, so the rage thing is understandable. But he was also a ladies man, and a hell of a lot more passionate about it than fly-by-night flyboy Hal. Too bad, Tora.
-
@Ken Kyle did in fact die this week. His ring confirms it, just so there's no confusion. But it should be noted that Hal Jordan was a Red Lantern for about 3 pages before being saved. ...and I really don't care to know what Hal Jordan would look like as a Star Sapphire.
-
I haven't picked up this week, which has GLC, so unless Kyle was killed in this issue, he's not dead yet. Though my comic shop guy thinks Kyle's toast as well. Which sucks, I always liked him, but he's kind of floated about since he broke up with Jade (who of course died and is a Black Lantern now). Guy going Red has been shown as cover art for awhile now, so I knew it was coming. But considering that Atrocitus and Larfleeze are together now, as are Hal/Sinestro/Carol/Indigo-1 and they're going to get Saint Walker, they really have the seven already set up. (And yes, Red Lanterns have their hearts replaced...Atrocitus had his ripped out by a Black Lantern, but his ring revived him before he could be taken over by a black ring.) As for "could Guy be cured" that's already been proven to be true. A blue ring will nullify a red ring. During "Rage of the Red Lanterns" Hal lost it enough that a vacant red ring grabbed him and converted him into a Red Lantern. He was fighting it a bit with the green, but it overwhelmed him, until Saint Walker put his blue ring on Hal, which led to Hal being a Green and Blue Lantern for a bit. (Funny how the only powers Hal hasn't had now are black, indigo, and violet...makes me wonder if those are coming.) As for the rainbow corps going away, I don't know. Geoff Johns did a lot in his revamp of GL (since Rebirth) to fit old stuff or fill in back story to set all this up. At the same time, if Final Crisis: Three Worlds is to be believed, green is the only one left in the future, especially with Sodam Yat's revised oath (In brightest day, through Blackest Night, no other Corps shall spread its light).

As for Guy going red What is the trigger (could his GF Tora die...) and more important as a fromer "GL" will he be able to control himself more than the regular Red Lanterns. When Hal got the red Ring he could still form constructs (unlike the regular ones who just puke out there Energy). Anyway i perdict that Guy, bitchslaps Atrocitus & the other red's into submission. He will become there leader. Witch would mean that there already would be Lights 5 combined (with: Indigo-1, Sinestro, Carol: Hal)to fend of the Black Lanterns.

Are those Klingon boots?
-
@Geoff: No, it's much more than that. It's definitely become kind of a marketing gimmick (all comics are, really) but the different Corps are each a statement about motivations. To start, why do we do things? What motivation do we have to perform any given action? There are seven basic reasons why we do things: 1. We just want to, no real thought as to why. (Green/Willpower) 2. We're angry and want to lash out. (Red, Rage) 3. We're greedy, and feel a complusive need to do them. (Orange/Greed) 4. We're scared of things, people or possible future events. (Yellow/Fear) 5. We have faith that said action will lead to happiness. (Blue/Hope) 6. We feel love for something or someone. (Purple/Love) 7. Out of compassion, just because it's a nice thing to do. (Indigo/Compassion)

If anyone actually thinks that any of the deaths in Blackest Night are going to stick, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you. DC isn't going to kill off half of its roster just for the sake of one miniseries. If you've actually bought into that idea, I kind of feel sorry for you. "I get the impression that all the complaining about different colored lanterns is from people who haven't actually read and/or understood the comics." Wait, so this is something more than the addition of a bunch of poorly-concieved characters just to suit a gimmicky storyline? Because that's what I've understood from reading the comics.
-
Obviously he COULD just magically go back to normal, but that would be shitty writing.
-
Cool, Kyle died? Thanks DC, for punishing me for not buying every tie-in. I actually finally liked Guy after hating him and his douchey hair and vest for years, and for having comics' best weapon and being a supporting character with it. I think its a cool look, although I hate that by just reading the crossover itself, I'm missing most of the story it seems. And Rob, markers were standard issue with my art school kit. They're just for showing rough colors and and establishing palettes in drafts. If youre a lazy asshole like me, you use them for final projects and hope nobody notices.
-
"Though it's not like Guy Gardner can suddenly go back after this. Becoming a Red Lantern destroys your heart and expels all the blood out of your body as face melting acid." Don't realy comics much, do you?
-
I get the impression that all the complaining about different colored lanterns is from people who haven't actually read and/or understood the comics. But yeah, I'm guessing it has something to do with Kyle Rayner dying. Though it's not like Guy Gardner can suddenly go back after this. Becoming a Red Lantern destroys your heart and expels all the blood out of your body as face melting acid.
-
@Greg Agreed, enough of lanterns of every color with corresponding emotions. I'm surprised the Green Lanterns aren't envious. Hopefully, some writer will write in a rainbow lantern to show them all how stupid this idea was.
-
Finally something in blackest night makes sense. He has been a rage addict for years.
-
Haha, AMEN, Greg. I also hate how all the symbols are just the weird outline things that started with the Sinestro Corps...even though they're supposed to have been around forever, blah blah blah. And, yeah, apparently, Kyle died. Fughking (fucking ugh).
-
Can I just say that this rainbow ring thing is fucking retarded and I can't wait until they retcon it away? Can I say that? Can I get an Amen?
-
if the major event that turns him is the death of Ice or Kyle, I will NOT be a happy bunny
-
From the (admittedly few) stories I read involving Guy, he seemed to be pretty hot-headed. This actually kind of makes sense.
-
Apparently becoming a Red Lantern means you have to paint your face to try to look like The Crow.
-
I've never cared for Gardner, so it's no big loss in my book. I'm not surprised that one of the (main) Green Lanterns is switching to another color.
-
The feet and arms on that picture remind of how I used to draw. It would be funny if he still had a bowl cut, it would take away all the drama.
-
@Rob **Spoiler** It's because Kyle Rayner dies. Which sucks. Hard. **END Spoiler**
-
The only GL that managed to be even more boring than Hal was John Stewart -that "Mosaic" series was as insulting to Hal as the Parallax II crap was to Kyle. Maybe something happens to Ice which makes Gardner rage out?
-
Lobo, the last Czarnian no more!
-
Sounds like how Kyle was temporarily made a Yellow Lantern / Parallax... you know, just to show how AWESOME Hal is. That said, Guy's been the one main Lantern that I'd thought was in the correct role since the revamp. Well, inasmuch as John Stewart barely was in the JLA thanks to DC neutering McDuffie.
-
I'm not ashamed to admit that Guy is one of my favorite characters. Glad to see him get a cool new look, sad to see him get less face time (I presume).
-
*weeps tears of confusion* I'm so happy he's gonna be focused on but so sad he's gonna be a bad guy.
