You will need:
• 1 Star Trek Communicator toy
• One Bluetooth phone
• A microcontroller
• Many other electrical bits
• One smart Asian nerd girl
Thus, Diana Eng wedged the good bits of a cellphone into a Communicator, and now it works, complete with the sound effects. Pretty damn sharp -- if you have the parts and skills, you can learn how to make one yourself here. Thanks to Borg-Cylon Love Child for the tip.

Captain Kirk never had to wait to have his call put through. I bet he made sure Uhura never kept him waiting...

Why don't we have a Uhura bluetooth headset yet?

I'm just enough of a Star Trek nerd to see how very cool this is, but not enough of one to actually build one. Now if someone could show me how to make a Sonic Screwdriver that unlocked and started my car, I'd be all about that!

There is actually a ST bluetooth communicator you can get from Parks Sabers. Get a lightsaber while your at it.

Screw the communicator, how about that Diana Eng? She blows the top off the nerdgirl desireability scale!

that girl was on a season of Project Runway. Season 2, I believe. I saw her face and was like, "Is that Diana from Project Runway". Then I was like, "why would that be her? How racist of me, thinking all Asians look alike". But it was her. Vindication. So, there you go, my lusty friends, you can check her out on Season 2 of Project Runway. SPOILER: She doesn't win.

Glad that someone else recognized her, muggies!
She was adorable on Project Runway, and while all of her nerdy designs didn't pan out well, some were really awesome, and she was way more creative than anyone else who's ever been on that show.
Also, that was the best season of that show, hands down. I'm glad to see she's doing well.

I am just wondering why there has never been a "official" star trek communicator phone. There is definitely a market for one.

There was SUPPOSED to be a Trek Themed phone released for the 40th anniversary but Sona Mobile (Yeah, I agree: "Who?") had a prototype and a software/games deal with paramount that never (ahem) materialized. They had a bad photoshop mock up that looked like the walkie talkies you could send away to Nabisco for when Star Trek V was released. But outside of a website promising us Trekkies the world, not much happened.
I think it was killed by the advent of the iPhone, as it was more lucrative to develop apps for that platform than funnel money into a start up company that was going to be selling something to a very niche market. Realize for the 40th anniversary that Abrams' Semi-Abortion had not be green lit yet.
It's disappointing that we never got our trek phone, but with this day in age focusing exclusively on touchscreen smart phones, there's not much call for something as utilitarian as a communicator except for the "fun" factor.
