I definitely agree. Also I was pretty curious to see how they would work with Stark revealing he was Iron Man at the end of the first and I'm liking how that is looking so far.
Bring it on.

I am very excited for this movie. I was never an Iron Man fan until I saw the first film. I hope this one lives up to the potential I have assigned it.

I'm excited. What else we got coming in the summer? Jonah Hex.. So Iron Man and Jonah Hex will be the subject of the "I'm a marvel, and I'm a PC" youtube videos I assume. We also have the Solomon Kane and Prince of Persia movies to look forward to. Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim vs the World, but that doesn't excite me as much...
Not too many action figure selling movies this upcoming year, eh??

Thank God we have some recognizable characters, what a relief! When we saw Wolverine:Origins over the summer my wife would lean over and ask "Who is this guy?" so I had to explain, "oh that's supposed to be so-and-so, that guy never did that, that guy doesn't have those powers, and I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA WHO THIS GUY IS" But this looks great, thanks Marvel! And I'm glad War Machine looks better than the Mark II armor from the first movie looked.

I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and say that out of all the superhero movie franchises, Iron Man has got to be the best. And I was never a big fan of Iron Man growing up. It was always Spidey and Batman. This movie looks awesome.
Now when does Tony become a drunk?!

What about Iron Maiden? Isn't Olivia Munn playing her in this movie? Add another character to the already over-stuffed roster.
I want to love it, so very very badly, and I'm still hopeful, but I was burned so badly by Spider-Man 3 that I just can't trust that there will be enough screen time for everyone and make it feel like it was ENOUGH.
That being said, the trailer was very, very cool.

I for one am looking forward to the movie.
When everything was raving Dark Knight, Iron Man was my favorite superhero movie that year. Throw stones at me if you want but aside from the excellent portrayals of Joker and Two Face, I didn't find Dark Knight as solid of a movie as Iron Man. Bale's Batman pales in comparison to RDJ's Iron Man.

.... my thoughts exactly. BRACE YOURSELF, JIMMY! *is attacked with papier mache batarangs by TDK fanboys*
Honestly, I just feel Iron Man is what a superhero movie should be like. I loved TDK's take on Batman, but it is by no means the definitive Batman that everyone seems to rave about (for me, that's Batman: TAS).
Iron Man was big, colourful and action-packed, but it had a heart, too, most of which came from the always awesome Robert Downey Jr. Finally, a superhero who wasn't tortured or conflicted by a big personal dilemma! It was funny, badass and the sequel looks to be a refreshing change from the usual superhero movie archetype of a secret identity. Stark actually enjoys being Iron Man, which makes the movie more fun to watch.
Plus, it contained a few loving nods to Marvel's comics that only the nerds got, but was still accessible to.... normal people.
TDK was very, very good, but it felt like a crime actioner that was sold as a superhero film. It's a damn long, complicated, dark movie, and while it is very quotable and contains characters that will probably forever have a place in pop culture, it just didn't feel as much like a comic book as Iron Man did.
Then again, excluding Batman, I'm a Marvelite, so I may be biased.

BATARANGS!@! NOOOO!!!!!! PAPERCUT!!!!!
Yeah, by all means objectively, TDK was not a bad movie. I personally just didn't like it that much. In fact, I had the same feelings toward Begins when I first saw it in theaters.
A week before TDK came out, I saw Begins again and appretiated it much more the second time. Though I still have some problems with it, I can say it was a great overall film, not just a great Batman film. I didn't get that with TDK after multiple viewings, aside for appretiating Joker/Two-face. I have some problems with the first Iron Man too but, even with those thoughts there, I still had a great time rewatching it from beginning to end. I'm hoping this sequel will be the same or better.

While I'm excited about this movie I'm not a fan of this Whiplash thing. Does Iron Man's rogue gallery suck this much?

eel replied to theBRUCE:
Yeah, I don't know a thing about Ironman that wasn't in or alluded to in the movie, which itself probably took a lot of liberties, but if limited range thrashing electric tentacles are the gist of Whiplash's abilities, then why can't Stark just spam rockets and energy blasts at him from eight miles away between whiskey shots? I'm sure he could find a away to keep away from civilians.

ZeroCorpse replied to eel:
Well, that's pretty much how he did it in the comics. Whiskey shots included.

Whiplash is a low-level villain. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been hiding a higher-level baddie in the background and letting Whiplash get all the press for the movie.
-
Iron Man's biggest, most dangerous foes are:
The Mandarin (dude with magical rings)
Obadiah Stane (did him in Iron Man 2)
Crimson Dynamo (Soviet version of Iron Man)
Titanium Man (see "Crimson Dynamo")
Doctor Doom (who is everybody's foe, really, and stuck in the FF movies now).
-
I can't think of anyone who is interesting or powerful aside from these guys. But hey, for every Red Skull, there's a Batroc the Leaper.
Posted 12/17/2009 at 02:37:30 PM
eel replied to ZeroCorpse:
So this guy's got no one to fight but clones of himself, magical beings (always a great selling point in superhero movies), and borrowed villians from other properties? And we expect this franchise to go where? I know there's a lot of cross-over and thus story depth in the comics, but with the standalone nature and one main hereo focus of superhero movies, I can't see this thing keeping the audience's interest, RDJ be damned. Of course they may elevate and retool lesser baddies. I don't know, I'm not in the comic book genus of nerdom so my knowlege is very limited.

Redicular replied to ZeroCorpse:
If anything kills the iron man franchise it'll be this, his rogues vary from overwhelmingly powerful(Doom/mandarin) to guys who are laughable(hello whiplash).
the doom/mandarin types are really too powerful to be done right in a single hero movie-- mandarin would be a great villain for that avengers flick they're talking about.
the whiplash types aren't strong enough to seem threatening and it becomes not if he wins, but how they manage to drag out the fight for a whole storyline. so you start seeing cheap tricks like de-powering for reasons tony doesn't just mop the floor with them.
Posted 12/17/2009 at 03:04:45 PM
Yeah, not every superhero can be Batman in terms of villain depth.
Iron Man isn't BAD, but there's not much out there to draw from. Anyway, since it's doubtful RDJR will be around after the next movie, might as well just do the Mandarin there and move on to something else. Iron Man isn't going to be an evergreen series.

Yakub Shabazz replied to ZeroCorpse:
This is what I keep thinking too. Despite the previews, I'm still not getting that Whiplash is the main baddie of this flick. Or, if he is, I think we'll see the original rumors come true in that he'll get more powerful armor later on. (And there's GOTTA be a reason a Soviet spy is showing up here; Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man have got to be the main fight at the end.)

Baltimoron replied to ZeroCorpse:
The character to whom you refer that was featured in the "Fantastic" Four movie is not Doom. Doom is the light of the world and the standard by which all men are judged.
That... thing... is Doom as Reed Richards would have you see him.

There's Melter, Scarcow befor becoming Ghost Rider's villain, Unicorn, The Black Knight (the bad one), Hawkeye wend he was a villain, and a lot of really goffy ones
Iron Man never really had a rogues gallery, Stark is more of a down to eath kind of hero and so fights Commies or evil CEOs or Terrorist (like AIM)

Maybe I'm just having a really bad day, or a bad life, but seeing this didn't excite me as it did the first movie. I'm in the minority, but I'm not expecting IM2 to be good.
Plus, while I know it's too late, it's *way too goddamn early* for either War Machine or Black Widow (and her extremely fake-looking hair extensions).

tim pun replied to lou-bert vs. q-bert:
Personally, I have a bigger problem with Mickey Rourke's hair extensions. Seriously, check it at 2:00 or so.
I'm seriously worried about Scarlett Johansen though. She's very pretty and all, which is important for superhero movies and these kinds of roles, but her track record is spotty at best. I liked her a lot in Ghost World and Lost in Translation, but she's been in some baad movies too.
You never know with sequels, I'm hoping for the best.
