Adding insult to injury, the films will be on Blu-ray, but all the extras are just coming on standard definition DVDs.

Stupid. Why do they even bother pushing the theatrical versions at this point honestly

I gotta say, as someone who never read the LOTR books, when I saw the movies I thought "they're all right." I couldn't get into them the way all my friends did, and I definitely couldn't sit through an entire movie without taking a break.
All that changed when I saw the extended cuts. I didn't want to, because I really felt if I couldn't sit through the theatrical release then there is no reason for me to watch an extra 45 minutes. But there is a world of difference, and they won me over so I now really like the LOTR movies.

Oh, how I miss the days of working at Suncoast and trying to explain to customers what the LotR extended editions were all about. "But, it's $20 more," they'd say. "But, it's twice as long," they'd complain. "But, it's so much better," I'd add. To no avail. And then another customer would come up from behind, tap me on the shoulder and ask, as I was turning right 'round, "When does the Twin Towers come out?"
Oh, yes. I miss those days.

you think that's bad? I was at Blockbuster, and heard two cineastes discussing these movies, and how they both agreed that Eragon was a much better movie, and that they didn't understand how anyone could be stupid enough to get the letterboxed DVDs because the picture didn't fill up the whole TV screen.

Ugh. I just threw up in my mouth a little. Coffee-flavored bile. Awesome, thank you.
Though, I must say, I never had a problem convincing people to get widescreen in favor of full screen. We had a pretty good visual aid behind the counter that showed the difference, and once people realized they were only getting half the movie in full screen format, and after they believed me that all TVs in the future will be widescreen (Ha! I'd like to see their faces now that they know I was right), they usually bought the right version.
Of course, sometimes, we didn't even bother putting the full screen copies on the floor shelves... Y'know, I DO actually kind of miss those days. Huh.

I actually like the theatrical cuts of the first and third movies a lot more than the rambling extended versions, as I never really cared for the books and didn't need to see stuff which was chopped out of theatres.
I mean, can anyone honestly say that after seeing Return of the King, anyone first thought that it should've been LONGER....

This will continue as long as customers are stupid enough to fall for it.

The fun part is, you know what's going to be included in this set? Ads promoting the extended edition Blu-Rays.
Seriously, if you're willing to sit through a 3 hour movie (and 9 hours of film in total), what the hell's wrong with another hour? Another hour of film is one less spent on Transformers 2, and that's a win for all of us.

This is ancient news. Check out the reviews for the set on Amazon where it has been slammed for double dipping. Same for the Star Trek movie set which is also theatrical because the extended footage 'wasn't shot in HD' ...

Hey, if geeks are dumb enough to buy them twice, I don't blame New Line for doing so.
It's like how people are going to bitch when Lucas releases cut-back versions of Star Wars on Blu Ray at first, and then waits a year and puts out the full versions. If you buy both, you're a fucking moron who deserves to have your pocket picked by these people.
Me, I'll be fine with the original extended cuts in HD via the PS3's upscaling. Looks close enough for my purposes.

Ah, these people...when will they learn?
I still haven't bought the Blu-Ray copy of Spiderman 1 & 2 because the only way to get them is by buying the trilogy box set. Well, since I don't want the third movie, why would I buy the box set? I suppose I would buy it if I really really wanted the first two movies. Which I do, but my hatred for them not selling them as singles out weighs my want for owning a copy of 1 & 2. So hey Columbia/Tri-star guess what? I ain't buying your fuggin box set.
Same with the LotR trilogy here. I'll only buy the ones I wanna buy (those being, the extended editions). I can wait.

Suck it BluRay, I'll settle for upscaled 1080. And I'll buy another LOTR movie when Jackson removes the elves from helms deep, and gives the movie its proper ending.
