I finally saw District 9 last night. It struck me that since it 1) had a compelling story and 2) only had a budget of $30 million, it could be considered something of the anti-Avatar, whether you liked either of them or not. At any rate, some enterprising soul has boiled down District 9 into its most essential component -- men saying "Fuck" in a South African accent. Enjoy.

I loved this movie and I hated Avatar.
Feel free to explain or dispute either of my positions.

I don't dispute at all. I completely agree. I don't give a shit about CGI, I just want a good story.

The Man With Two Brains replied to Noremak The Neck-Breaker:
Agreed! I love quality visual effects, but I hate them if they're not attached to a compelling story! Inversely, I love a good story and don't give a shit whether the effects are great or terrible since they're just a method used to tell the story.

I loved both movies but the ending of D9 depresses me. Thats the only reason I refuse to buy the Blueray. I don't need to spend 20 dollars to make myself sad.. I have mirrors for that.

Of all the movies I saw that came out in 2009, District 9 was my favorite. Even better than Watchmen, which I really did enjoy.
The summer was just so bad for films, and I went into District 9 thinking it was going to be a slow and grinding realistic Sci-Fi. And with every other movie I saw being a disappointment, I didn't have very high hopes. But it turned out to be an action packed awesomefest. I even gave it an honorable mention in my Top Ten favorite films of the 00's.
Pig launching gravity gun. Nothing beats that.

Two totally different movies. District 9 was a nice piece of film (though your idea of a compelling story is quite different than mine...perhaps you meant compelling premise?) but James Cameron was never trying to make a 30 million dollar movie. Part of the point if avatar was to push the technology of film making, which is costly. Whether you approve of camerons methods or not, his goalwas not the same as Neil blomkamp. And it'd be nice if you stop taking potshots at avatar and actually you know, write yourgoddamn review already. At the very least so that afterward you could shut the hell up about it forever.

toomin replied to Monkey boy:
I don't think it was entirely a potshot, really...I mean, "District 9" and "Avatar" both had similar points to their stories, but only "District 9" bothered to be slightly inventive about its storytelling technique. In D9, the main character is just enough of an idiot and a douchebag that you're never entirely sure what he might do next, but everything plot twist in "Avatar" comes as no surprise to anyone. What makes "Avatar" bearable is Cameron's abilities as a filmmaker to catch your attention and hold it, and then its obviously wondrous visuals.
As for money, well, perhaps that is less important to making it an "Anti-Avatar," whatever that is supposed to mean. The people making D9 didn't have the budget to spend like JC and his crew, and they probably didn't want or need to, solely because they weren't trying to improve on film technology just so they could make their movie. The technology they had worked just fine.
You can say "District 9" is the better movie because it tells a better story and is better at making you think after watching it, but to other people "Avatar" might be just as good because it is great entertainment.
Anyway, what I think Rob was just saying ('cause I don't think he's the long-running judgmental type) is that if you compare story originality and the cost to make each movie, "Avatar" and "District 9" are opposites. I suppose you would compare them since they're both about man treating aliens badly. Whatever.
Rob, I agree with this guy about your review. Hurry the fuck up and watch "Avatar," or if you have already, write the review, dammit!

Sorry, I had to do it.
Anyway, I have seen neither but I am planning to see both. For an actress I see way to few films, lol. Both look really good but I do think District 9 looks better, seems like it has more messages in it.

Vok (fook), is Fuck in afrikaans Wikus' mother tongue.
Eg: 'Vok jou', Means 'fuck you'.
It's one of the most gravely, expressive languages on the planet. And didn't need to be invented for the film either.
Eg: 'Vok. Ek sal jou vokken moer, jou vokken doos', means 'Fuck. I will fuckin smash you, you fucking cunt'.
Sorry to use the C-word.

District 9 is the new Terminator. Relatively low budget, badass sci-fi, director specialist of SFX... He'll go far, when an other has just arrived.
Thank you Neill, thank you James, you both made 2009 a great Sci-Fi year!

District 9 has me all bamboozled! I really liked it when I was watching it, but the more I thought about the movie, the less sense the movie made. Great special effects, wonky story. Why does alien ship fuel turn humans into the alien species?

I think the "fuel" was originally some kind of a everymatter. You put it in a engine it works as a fuel, you put it on a alien it fixes it up. The fuel thought Wikus was hurt and started to heal him with alien DNA.

Both movies were awesome for different reasons but alot of folks fail to realize that District 9 and Avatar both had Weta behind it. So big props to Weta Workshop.
The x factor is Blomkamp had Peter Jackson as a mentor and producer.
Here is the difference in a nutshell provided by my wife when she watched each film.
District 9 "dirty"(in a good way)
Avatar "Pretty"

I thought this clip was a total waste of time... right up to the 56 second mark, and then it flipped a switch and it became funny.
As for the movies--I haven't seen Avatar yet, but plan to. D9 was one of those movies I was glad I saw, but I have very little interest in seeing again. Some movies a endlessly rewatchable, my personal list including Aliens (the longer cut), Blade Runner, the latest Trek, the first Matrix, and Tin Men. I have never been able to figure out what makes a movie "work" for repeated viewings, especially when it has no, you know, nudity and stuff.

When they say "FOOK" in a "Sith Ifrikan" accent they may sound South African but they also sound like people from Dublin when they say "Fooke". Strange, I know....

District 9 is what Avatar hoped to be. Even with the minuscule budget compared to Avatar District 9 gave us great visuals and a good story. Avatar just had the visuals.
The thing I appreciated most about District 9 is how the aliens were portrayed. You actually cared for the father and son even though they were in no way recognizable as a humanoid form. Even without human facial features you could sense their emotion.

District 9 did what we see so rarely these days: a good story combined with good special effects, awesome aliens and weapons, and set in forth in a way that made it believable. I don't think this is nearly as hard as Hollywood makes it out to be. Sadly, they've proven that they only need big flashy explosions to make money and needn't bother with good dialog, plot, subplot, or acting. At lest they're keeping the MST3K guys in business.

"FOOK!" is my new mantra! to be fair tho, i watched both movies and found only the last third of D9 to be formulaic, as oppose to "Avatar". which was COMPLETELY formulaic!! this movie also dismisses the hollywood formula of "unity through sex", and actually makes fun of it with the in-movie news headline. FOOKING HILARIOUS!!

District 9 is ruined in two stages:
1) You realize that you hate the main character and wish he was dead.
2) You realize that everyone - human and alien - would be better off if he died.
But, lots of people blew up in extremely gory ways and it's cooler to like low budget films so it will constantly be praised.

I think District 9 was okay but was really to me a cliche movie in as much as Avatar.
Find any movie with Africa related material and it is about the same as District 9.
I don't see why people are hung up about the Ubatanium or wahtever it is called.
Why is the Alien dad and his kid leaving alll the other aliens? I didn't get that part
