• Build-a-Figure: Ultra-Humanite
I've talked before about how Mattel seems to be making the most obscure DC superheroes it can for this theoretically mass-market toyline, but this is ridiculous. I guess there's a chance kids have heard of Zatanna from cameos in Smallville or JLU, and maybe they'll buy Golden Age Green Lantern because he's a Green Lantern, despite not looking like any GL they've ever seen. But the rest? Madness. Oh, and apparently this is the new Wal-Mart wave, so good luck, DC collectors -- I'm pretty sure no human being has ever found last year's DCUC Wal-Mart set. Still, if I ever see it, even I have to buy a Kamandi figure, just on principle alone. (Via Poe Ghostal)

I'm a really big DC fan and like the toys they are making, but I have to admit, I have no idea how any of these would actually appeal to kids. They practially rely on collectors for sales.
Strangely, I did find the last Wal-Mart Imperiex figure line, all of it. I've never seen another Robotman figure other than the one I bought. I'm excited because I love JSA, and Ultrahumanite is pretty sweet. But for 9 year olds? Yeah, make another Batman.

Do kids have to have a pre-existing knowledge of a character to buy them? Is there anything to be said for a kid walking into ta store, seeing a cool-looking toy (eg, a shiny gold robot) and saying "WANT!"

Couldn't find last year's wave? No one I know who really wanted it couldn't find it. I live in the middle of nowhere and found it no problem. At least there's no Joker in this one, so no figure should be exceptionally hard to find. That said, Wal-Mart waves are still annoying.

Kamandi was on two eps of the surprisingly good Batman the Brave and the Bold last year. Zatanna also had a role on B:TAS which was entertaining and I think memorable.

Wal-Mart waves of anything suck. You'd expect to be able to buy them at... I don't know.... A WAL- MART! Oddly enough there seem to be tons of Powergirls still left over around here.

once again, corporate america has managed to puke up something that would draw geeks in like moths to a flame. and works just as effectively. -sigh- haven't we been through this millions of times, people?

I can't tell, are you upset or excited to see Gold on the list? Personally, I'm a big fan of the Metal Men, but you're wording could go either way.

The Flash III replied to Greymattersplat:
Iron is the kick-ass figure of Wave 12--he's partially metal! Plus all the Metal Men are guaranteed to have accessories. I can't wait!

Grenadier replied to The Flash III:
From the reviews I've read, the only metal on Iron is the chain that connects the wrecking ball to his hand attachment. The figure itself isn't die-cast or anything.
My only complaint about this being a Walmart-exclusive wave is that there are no variants, which means no Perez Zatanna.

Actually, this lineup is pretty awesome, and I'll tell you why:
1) If you've seen the new Darkseid wave (found 3 of them last night myself) and seen the new packaging that comes with it, and are as anal about this kind of thing as I am, then you'll know that there are 4 characters shown on the packaging that aren't currently announced figures: Zatanna, Ultra-Humanite, Vixen, and THE GODDAMN MARTIAN MANHUNTER!!!!! This knocks two of those figures off that list. This would put the odds of J'onn and Mari showing up in the next wave after that pretty freaking high. Martian Manhunter's the only one left of the Justice League's "Big 7" to not come out, and it's almost a crime against humanity that we've had to wait this long.
2) They're proving once again just how deep their commitment is to finishing out a team roster. The JSA is getting close, with most of the major players now accounted for. It would not surprise me at all if here within a couple of series we get a Stargirl with S.T.R.I.P.E. as the CnC figure. Gold follows Iron from the just released series 12, and that's a good chunk of the team right there. It'll be nice to be able to have them facing my Chemo in my display at home.
3) Tyr actually serves 2 purposes. There are only really a few figures left from the "Super Powers" list that haven't shown up in this series yet: The Dick Grayson Robin, the aforementioned Martian Manhunter, Golden Pharaoh, Plastic Man, and Samurai...and technically Mr. Freeze, since he's from the line before DCUC. Tyr knocks the list down by one more, and like I mentioned, Manhunter should be soon. They've already done A Robin, so who knows if that's the one that counts on their list. The even more important fact though is that Tyr is a Legion of Superheroes bad guy. They've been talking about starting that group, and to me, this looks like the beginnings of it.
3) Zatanna is awesome, fills out more of the JLA, (as well as their "girl" figure for this series) and by the time she comes out, will have her own ongoing written by Paul Dini on the stands.
4) Kamandi is just cool.

The Flash III replied to Greymattersplat:
5. Except that Kamandi looks like a construction worker or one of the guys from the gay steel mill on the Simpsons. Nice jean shorts, buddy!

Greymattersplat replied to The Flash III:
Ah...well, that's unfortunate. I haven't seen pics of these yet, so I was unaware. I would bet, however, that his inclusion is due to a) he's shouldn't have much in the way of specialized parts, and his hair is usually depicted as so big that they could conceivably just post the equivalent of a wig on a preexisting head that has a face and not have to sculpt a whole new head. This could free up some budget for other characters...like maybe Ultra-Humanite, or accessories for Gold. b) There's no New God this time out, but he's still a Kirby character.
This whole lineup feels like they're kinda putting one over on Wal-Mart. They do the Wal-Mart lineups because Wal-Mart requests them, and you don't tell Wal-Mart no...but if you can sneak out a lineup of "B" listers; which I don't think any of us would argue that these guys aren't, even though we all love them...well, that does take the sting out of it a little if you ask me.

Rob, it seems every time you talk about a new DCUC wave, you're astonished by the character selection, but you've been talking about new ones for like a year now. They seem to be selling, is what I'm saying.
You know every new wave is packed with re-releases of really popular Batman/Superman level characters, right? So on the shelves, you get Flash and Green Lantern right alongside Vigilante and Kamandi.
Also, the Wal-Mart exclusive Wave 10 has been plentiful. Especially Power Girl, who really shouldn't have been double-packed instead of Man-Bat, bu there you go. I'm surprised THIS is a Wal-Mart wave when the last one had Batman, Joker, Man-Bat, Beast Boy (hey, main cast of a popular cartoon), and Power Girl (who has her own book now, at least). I guess this might coincide with that Dini-written Zatanna book that's supposed to come out, but still.

Why are you so surprised about there being obscure characters in these waves? That's the point. These toys are being marketed to collectors first and foremost. The sole purpose of this line was to deliver the obscure characters that only comic fans care about.

I have 3 Wal-Marts within a 15 minute radius of me, and I finally, FINALLY, just saw the first and only Wave 10 figure to show up in this area. It was Power Girl. I left her where she was, with the 4 Captain Colds, 3 blue-suited Aquamans and 3 Blue Beetles (there was a theme of 'blue' for some reason). Wave 10 may have been plentiful IN SOME AREAS, but it had notoriously terrible distribution. Many, many areas across the country were/are in the same boat as me. In addition to the Wal-Marts, I also have 2 Targets, a Toys R Us, and numerous other regional chains (Fred Meyer, ShopKo, Bi-Mart)that (theoretically) carry the line, and I've yet to see anything from Waves 11 or 12 other than a lone red Parademon. Mattel has failed here.

Gee... I wonder how Wal Mart's conservative Christian fan base would feel if they realize that they're selling a gay superhero (Obsidian) to children. OH WILL SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?! OH THE HUGE MANATEE!
Meanwhile, I think that sometimes as long as the characters look cool, kids will buy them. Hell, I first learned about most DC characters from the old Super Powers toy line.
Hey, wouldn't it be nice if they had some mini comics like they used to? I loved those as a kid. Lord knows comics always need new readers. It sure helped hook me in.
As for Wal Mart exclusive, every time I've been to the Wal Mart near me, I've almost never seen any DC toys. Last time I thnk I saw two Batman toys, I think one from The Batman and one Brave and the Bold. No DCU ones at all. Plenty of Star Wars (which were also among the only Legos they had), Wrestling, and Bayformers figures. Blech. I did finally find Green Arrow and Black Canary at Toys R Us.

Isn't one of the Metal Men female?
I mean, they're choosing a member of a fairly obscure super-team to make into a figure, very possibly aimed more at marketing to nerds and collectors...and they're not picking the robot chick?
Look, I don't claim to be a marketing genius, but I do claim not to have bone chips lodged in my brain.
