I always felt that the tile of Just Cause was meant to have a dual-meaning, though I've done 0 investigation to confirm this theory (or find that it's been expressly stated somewhere, making me look like an idiot). To me, the on-the-face title referred to the actual plot of the game, such as it is. But in terms of gameplay it seemed to be saying "Just 'Cause"--as in do whatever the hell you want just because you can.
Never played it, but it seemed fun-ish. Still waiting eagerly for your review of FFXIII. I'm curious what you have to say about it.

ClancyDamon replied to PJ:
You're right. According to the developers, the title is derived from the US invasion of Panama to unseat Manuel Noriega, named Operation Just Cause. The original was in a made up Caribbean nation so it kind of fit. But most people are certain that the name was picked as a justification for the gameplay, like you said. The characters themselves are goofy and over-the-top ridiculous. The game clearly isn't trying to take itself too seriously. At one point an Illuminati-esqu group appears making weapons, and you also have to kill a Nazi scientist. Yes, an actual Nazi scientist.
It was great back when it was released, but it sadly has not held up well at all. I just purchased it on Steam for $7, and even though I loved it originally, I feel like I wasted my money. The sequel looks good, but if you don't like the demo, you won't like the game. It's nothing but that from start to finish.

Arcane replied to ClancyDamon:
That's totally ridiculous, only the higher-ups in the Nazi party escaped to South America, all the scientists were absorbed by the US government.

Meh. These games aren't really my bag. GoW3 and the Dragon Age Expansion will keep me busy for now. The games I'm looking forward to:
Transformers: War for Cybertron
Metroid: Other M
Fallout: New Vegas
Puzzle Quest 2
Portal 2
Singularity (maybe, haven't seen much about it lately)

Do you not want to talk about FFXIII because it's a crushing disappointment thus far?
Posted 03/17/2010 at 10:19:38 AM
Yeah, kinda curious about that myself.

Yes. It sucks. I've been warning people about this since it had problems in Japan. The game sold for basically $108 US dollars. In the first month, trade in value of the game dropped to about $17. A week later, the game went on sale for half price in Japan, and they still can't sell it.
There are lots of bugs, glitches, and freezes in the game. The characters suck. If your main character ever dies, you have to reload your game. There are NO TOWNS! Your summons turn into motorcycles (I can't make this shit up.)
There is a laundry list of problems with the game, and yet, the fanboys couldn't resist.
I bought Final Fantasy 2 on the Virtual Console for my Wii this week, and I'm loving it more than you guys are "loving" XIII.....

Gotta disagree with you there I'm afraid
1.I haven't experienced a single bug or glitch since I got the game (and I'm 40 hours in)
2.The characters, while not the greatest ever, do hold their own and have some interesting backstories
3.If your main character dies you DON'T have to reload your game, you get to retry from that battle, no need to spend two hours going through a dungeon you already travelled through, unlike most JRPGs
4.There are only no towns in the sense that you cannot shop or play mini-games in them (shops handled atg save points) and, considering the plot that kind of makes sense. I mean, come on, if you're on the run do you stop off to go shopping?
5.Ok, I'll give you the whole motorcycle thing, I can see how some people would dislike that. Me? Well that's just the kind of batshit insanity I've come to expect and love of the japanese.
(In case you couldn't tell, I like the game!)

I know you're speaking, but all I hear is "Fanboy, fanboy, fanboy, I will suck Square Enix's cock all the way down to the base."

jeffers replied to GUMBERCULES!:
Wow, and here I thought you'd actually have some maturity. Oh well, clearly I was wrong and you're the only person whose opinion holds any validity whatsoever, dickhead.

I stand by my statement. And thanks for proving me right.

jeffers replied to GUMBERCULES!:
What? How exactly did I prove you right? I'm not even sure what I did to you in the first place, all I did was a voice an opinion that didn't agree with yours, and if you take offense to that then surely you're just as bad as the fanboys that you claim to hate?

Denjiro replied to GUMBERCULES!:
Let me start off by saying I have no intention of play FF13. However, the only thing you've proven is that you're an idiot with the maturity of a feces flinging rhesus monkey. Congrats.

i bought just cause originally because i was already in the gamestop and needed something else to play. i was grabed by the claim of it having an ingame world of 250,000 square miles. holy shit it really is that big. missions were repetitive, but it was fucking fun to play, and the stunts are awesome. i just love running down the street with a grapple gun.

I have been playing the demo for Just Cause 2 on and off and have a blast with just the demo! Its a ton a fun and only 30 mins long but you have multiple stats on how much chaos you cause and using the grappling hook is the best part. You can tie any two items together like people and cars or shoot a canister then grapple to it and take off like a rocket! Loads of fun.

I'm not a serious gamer, so what's a "sandbox shooter"?

GUMBERCULES! replied to The Flash III:
Go anywhere. Do anything. Blow anything up any way you want. Look it up on Youtube sometime. There's a great video of juping a speedboat, climbing onto the hood, and shooting a rocket launcher into a guard tower before hitting the water again.
That's a sandbox shooter.

Think Grand Theft Auto, but less driving and more shooting.

If this game is anything like the first one, it won't be worth a launch day purchase, but when it drops in price a bit, it'll be well worth the punt on it.
I rejected the original for being well and truly "MEH", but then a college housemate told me about it, I decided to pick up the game around six months to a year after release for half price, and I was rarely so happy as I was with JC 1.
