From the Hollywood Reporter:
Warner Bros., already developing an adaptation of the manga "Akira," is in the process of securing the movie rights to "Bleach." Peter Segal is in negotiations to produce, though not direct, the adaptation with Viz Media, the anime publishing house that releases the books in English in the U.S. Michael Ewing, Segal's partner at Callahan Filmworks, will also produce.Peter Segal directed 50 First Dates and the Steve Carell Get Smart movie, so... Bleach fans are totally fucked. Obviously it'll be set in America, and I expect Ichigo to be renamed Joe and have brown hair, since gingers are so unpopular these days. Hell, I doubt it'll even be called Bleach; I can't imagine any fat movie studio execs understanding or thus approving the title. Hmm, I wonder what they could rename? Anyone think "Incarnate" might work?

I'm not a Bleach fan, but with all that their American fans have gone through lately, they have my pity. This has the potential to be perhaps the worst live action anime idea ever.
Hollywood, if you really have a boner for making an anime movie, get James Franco and Bruce Willis and make a fucking Cowboy Bebop movie finally!

Get Smart wasn't that bad, although admittedly it was carried by the awesomeness of the Rock and the 'wait, when the hell did she get that hot' factor surrounding Anne Hathaway.
But what would a Bleach movie be anyway? A fifty minute training sequence followed by a fifty-minute fight? You'd have non-fans committing ritual suicide in the audience.
[wait, what am I saying... non-fans wouldn't ever turn up for this.]

Y'know, there's an old Russian army joke I heard awhile back...it seems the Army brass decided to issue an intelligence test to their troops, consisting of putting round and square wooden blocks through the appropriate holes in a pegboard. The testers concluded that their troops consisted of two types of people: The very smart, and the very strong.
Hollywood is very strong.

I would agree...except for Avatar, or "the Last Airbender", or whatever they're calling that movie.
Now, I know NOTHING about Avatar, except that a lot of people like it and I haven't got around to seeing it yet...but I think I've heard that it's actually original, and not based on a pre-existing manga/anime/whatever, correct? Whether it is or not doesn't actually really matter so much as I just actually don't know, but from what I HAVE seen, it looks like it COULD be from an anime/manga, and if the movie version is even half as bad-ass as it really does look, then that might just be the final straw towards getting things like this (and Akira) moving once and for all. It'd be like the "Bryan Singer's X-Men" for anime movies, and suddenly boom...there's 30 in active production.
Posted 03/22/2010 at 11:06:44 AM
Monkey boy replied to Greymattersplat:
Avatar the last airbender is a cool show, but it's an entirely American creative production. That may have been a contributing factor in how quickly it was adapted to the big screen. But yes it looks awesome.
Posted 03/22/2010 at 11:15:39 AM
wotness replied to Monkey boy:
The last Airbender is indeed pretty nice. I still find it a shame that they chose to ignore the ethnicity of some characters. Especially of some of the leads.
So many people in the world and they can't find anyone who kind of looks the part and can act a little? How come Mel Gibson could pull it of with Apocalypto? They should have taken a example from him..
Posted 03/22/2010 at 12:53:38 PM
Monkey boy replied to wotness:
I've been watching the tv show and while there are many allusions to Asian and Inuit cultures, there is no indication that the world is not multiethnic, and the character designs are ambiguous and generic enough to get away with the cast they've chosen. I think it's a bit silly to think that just because there's a vaguely pan Asian theme to the fantasy world they've made up, the people within that world should be made up of one particular racial group.
Posted 03/22/2010 at 01:54:18 PM
wotness replied to Monkey boy:
True, the world might be multi-ethnic. But the Last Airbender shows the part of the world that is inspired by Asian/Inuit and such cultures. Imo, the Asian theme is not all that vague. The clothes, fighting style, houses, hairstyles and so on, are not that of a western society.
To some extend I agree that some character designs are ambigious and generic enough. Some characters are not obvious Asian looking or the like, so it is possible to play around with those.
But I still would have liked to see that, when possible, they would keep the ethnic background of a character in mind. Sokka and Katara could have been played by Hispanic or Latino kids, as example.
Posted 03/22/2010 at 02:17:24 PM
Monkey boy replied to wotness:
Why? Just for diversity's sake? Zuko will be played by dev patel (o slumdog millionaire) and he honestly looks pretty cool in the part. But Most of the characters don't seem particularly Hispanic or Latino. Everyone seems a bit tan I suppose.
Posted 03/22/2010 at 02:24:54 PM
Ghash Ironhand replied to Monkey boy:
Not to derail this but the saddest part monkeyboy is that Zuko (Patel's character) should be more japanese or chinese then Hindi, at least going by his look, Patel (And there for all evil guys in the show except for one or two) being brown doesn't add diversity but detracts from it in my opinion...
Sokka and Katara could had being played by either Latino, Middle Eastern (Whatever dark skin people that looked slightly alike and could act) or even Afro-American,considering they are both darkskinned and Katara has curly hair.
I mean, everybody is white except for the bad guys? It might not have being done on purpose but that looks racist as fuck.

Well, if it's an AMERICAN remake set in AMERICA, they probably will. It's not like there'll be any reason to make the cast all Asians. Half the Gotei 13 isn't, anyway. Tousen sure as hell ain't, and neither is Aizen.

wotness replied to toomin:
I agree. There are plenty of manga/anime out there that do lend itself for adaptation. But this sort of shounen? No.
As anime and manga I already had to suspend my believe and just accept things as they are, because it is a anime/manga. But on the big screen, some of those things will just look ridiculous.

one can only hope the execs at Warners manage to look at the source material before they start making the film but that is too much to ask. though one can also hope they wind up not being able to get the rights and thus spare fans another dragon ball z. and no doubt they will cast cacausins actors for most of the parts. plus the title will not be bleach but maybe soul takers or something. hope the thing winds up not happening. that warner comes up short. on this thing.

The one series I think could be adapted into a U.S. movie would be Yu Yu Hakusho. Part of the premise of YYH is that Yusuke and Kuwabara actually fit into street thug stereotypes from Japan, and so they make unlikely heroes. So, for a live action version, they can make them black or hispanic.

they key word in these movie deals is "Adaptation." Spirit Detective fighting Demons, there's nothing specifically Japanese about it. It's like when they adapt Shakespeare plays to take place in modern times.

I don't care about Bleach, so this doesn't bother me too much, except that the more these American anime/manga movies actually get the green light, the more they're going to make (unless they all flop) and I'm afraid of what they'll pick up next.
Also, read the blurb more carefully: "Peter Segal is in negotiations to produce, though not direct, the adaptation with Viz Media..."
Why does it matter what movies Segal has directed? Apparently, he's in talks to produce.

After seeing Dragonball Evolution and what it attempted – and spectacularly failed, à la Ed Wood – to do, I am curious as to why any producer would think that any anime-based live-action movie would get any bank. There are a fair number of anime fans in the U.S., but – surprise! – most of them have no money and will as soon stream a pirated copy of a movie as watch it legitimately.

They couldn't POSSIBLY fuck Bleach up more than it already fucks itself up, to begin with.
Bleach absolutely fucking sucks. It has precisely zero merit of any kind, to it. It is even more sickeningly loathesome than Naruto. That is a level of wretchedness that deserves stunned applause at how ANYTHING can manage to be worse than Naruto, but Bleach wins that prize many times over.
I dare say that anything that an American movie, or even.... hell... a Turkish or Brazillian-made "film" could stand to be nothing but an improvement. Just so long as they removed all of the actual characters, and replace them with different characters, change the plot and entire concept to something radically different, and leave no names the same... as to wash away the failure of actual Bleach away from the production, and then changes it's name... then it might have potential.
But making a film based on Bleach is like turning Vomit Soup into a Turd Casserole.
