At least Planet Terror was billion times better than the Death Proof piece of shit.
-
I have to say I thought the footage looked weak. Maybe they're keeping all the surprises for the film instead of giving everything away in every trailer, but this looked more like a generic homage of Predator 1. Also, I hope that forest is supposed to be on Earth, because it doesn't look like an alien world at all. I'm definitely going to give the film a chance, but at present I'm not holding out hope of it being as brilliant as the original (or even Predator 2, which I really liked).

Rob, I love your site. I love your articles, I love everything about Topless Robot. But Rodriguez is the mother-fucking man, and I will not tolerate your insinuations otherwise! Continue this irrational behaviour and I will be forced to subdue you while I forcefully narrate my fan fic entitled "Green Lantern and the Ass-Raping of Teddy Ruxpin: Snuff-Style". Wait, that actually sounds pretty good. Maybe I'll give Michael Bay first dibs on the live-action adaptation...
-
as someone on i09 pointed out...what's with the laser beam smiley face on Adrian Brody at 1:35?
-
I don't understand. What makes him a douche?
-
Gotta go with the nitpicking crowd. Love most of what Rodriguez has done and think he's the perfect choice to steer the Predator franchise back toward respectability. The series really has never had a decent sequel. I think we're finally getting one.
-
Actually, the twist Rodriguez is talking about is that the Predators chasing after everyone ARE Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover.
-
I don't understand the problem. Not because of lack of information or clarification, but because I don't really see anything wrong with calling Predators predators. This seems like nitpicking, which is dangerous for nerds. If not held in check, one can end up like this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq4GUDgVlTg

Let's see... phrases like: "not make it feel like the 5th or 6th movie in a series, but the first" "give the audience something to get into again" "go the other direction and give the audience something it isn't expecting" "a new updated nastier, meaner breed" "something new and different and bold" "On the big screen it's gonna explode" Yep, Rodriguez sure is trying to make this movie sound lame.
-
I think you're being too nit-picky with this, Rob. Too "Comic Book Guy" elitist here. I mean, that last sentence alone (Wait until the end, when he calls the Predators -- and I swear to god I'm not shitting you -- predators. Guh.) - come on.
-
I can't thank of one thing in Planet Terror that isn't worth loving
-
Cowboy Curtis taking on the Yautja? YES!
-
Yeah, "Planet Terror" was fucking amazing.
-
I agree, Planet Terror was balls deep in awesome.
-
Strangely enough, I haven't subconsciously catalogued the many times I've seen Robert Rodriguez talk about his movies (red carpet interviews, DVD special features, etc.) like I have Quentin Tarantino. But, I do have recollections of the Once Upon a Time in Mexico DVD and him really seeming to enjoy discussing the making of that movie and his filmmaking process in general, how he does almost everything himself from his own studio. And, I definitely remember thinking that Rebel Without a Camera was infused with enthusiasm to spare. So, yeah, I was caught off-guard. Maybe it's just because both those examples are from at least five years ago. I guess he's mellowed a lot in the intervening years. Kinda sad, in a way...
-
Ahem. Planet Terror. And that movie is amazing.
-
I sure do hope the Predators win this time by not losing to Arnold or Danny Glover.
-
I'd just always gotten the impression that Rodriguez just never really sounds enthusiastic. I remember watching the commentary for El Mariachi several years ago, and his droning voice just about put me to sleep.
-
Is it just me or does the concept art for the predator hounds look reminiscent of Battle-Cat/Panthor? It totally looked like a gnarlier version with organic armor... Nice.
-
Really? I didn't see much of anything bad in the videos. Certainly color me more interested in it after seeing it.
-
Everyone is completely missing what Rob meant in the comment...
-
Rodriguez movies ALWAYS look like this. They appear to be amazing on the previews and then they suck. Planet Zombie anyone?
-
I still to this day don't have any clue why people don't like Robert Rodriguez... To me he is a Great Director. And so what he said Predators... Duh that's what they are! So if I saw Giraffes walking around I am not allowed to say hey look at those Giraffes? Are you kidding me?
-
It was just a lame pun. Yes, technically, they're "predators", but it was just lame.
-
I agree! What the hell? Why are we bashing so hard on this film?
-
I don't see the problem there. The proper noun Predators are improper noun predators. What's the big deal?
-
I'm watching this only for Shane Vendrell.
-
What he meant was he called them a predator. Not a Predator. As in, the term predator, not a name for the species.
-
I think this is going to be great-hands down this is going to be the best Predator movie since the first one(although thats not saying much....although I loved the first AvP).
-
Except it could also be an homage to the Alien->Aliens thing. Aliens went an ENTIRELY different direction, which it looks like this is also(despite the fact that it's a "team of badasses with guns"). This isn't a Special Forces team going after some druglord in his jungle hideout and getting bushwhacked by a Predator on a camping trip. This is a group of soldiers and civilians who've been kidnapped, armed, and put into a Predator hunting ground on another planet--for the express purpose of being 'prey' for the Predators involved.
-
Guys, I think the movie looks good. Really. But Rodriguez makes the whole enterprise sound awful. Seriously, his different direction from Arnold is to have a bunch of badasses with guns fight a Predator (or Predators) in a lush jungle? Gee. Re: "The Predators are predators," I think hunter would have been fine, but it also would've been equally fine to avoid the comparison entirely. We know the Predators are predators, guys. It's in their fucking name.
-
Have to agree with Rob on Rodriguez himself not making the movie sound interesting. Where's his enthusiasm? As much as Tarantino can sound douchey when talking about his movies, he is very clearly excited to talk about each one. Rodriguez, here, sounds like a man who's stretched himself too thin with so many projects. OR! There's the hopeful fan reading and Rodriguez has simply seen what Predators is shaping into and wishes he'd made the film instead-- which could be good or bad, I suppose. Still, yeah, what are Predators if they aren't "Predators?" I think it's just shorthand, right? Like, if you call the aliens in Predators "aliens" people will get confused thinking you might be talking about the aliens from Aliens. Maybe?
-
What? Robert Bending Rodriguez is producing it at Troublemaker studios. This means that it isn't FOX mangling the franchise like they have been for nigh on two decades. Also, he's PRODUCING, not directing. Top that off with the fact that what he's said in the video is essentially correct- you can't top 80s Arnold, go a different direction. It looks solid, and it has a good cast. Chill, dude.
-
I wonder if we will see a Predator run away from an explosion in slow motion this time as well.
-
well thats not saying much, 2 hours of watching paint drying is about 500x better than either of AVP movies.... I am looking forward to this, but won't be in any rush to see it. If the feedback comes back good I will go to the pics to see it, if not then I will just wait for one of my mates to buy it bluray.
-
Helps if I search for a synopsis first: sounds like they are headed in the right direction!
-
Ya, I gotta say, this looks much better than the last to AVP movies. Requiem wasn't terrible, just disappointing. This looks like it might be good, won't get my hopes to high either way.
-
The scene in the sooty wasteland (with the fellow getting some shoulder cannon laser love) makes me hope USCM (or similar) on another planet... but I suspect I get Eric Foreman and Morpheus in the Amazon...
-
And what exactly should we call the creatures in "Predators" instead of "Predators"? I'm a big enough geek to know that they are often referred to as "the hunters" or even "Yautja", their official name, but fans and film makers alike have called them "Predators" for a long time. What exactly are we supposed to call them in order to not be labeled a douche bag by the guy who said "Avatar" would make no money?
-
looks solid to me. I trust Robert Rodriguez, he is a smart dude. I think the concept of the Predator hunting dog is genius
-
Rob, I am not following your line of reason here. I have not been a fan of Predator since the original, but this looks kinda cool.
-
ummmm... i don't know about this jsut yet. this can either be god or another AVP minus W.S Anderson. but still *facepalm*
-
Don't want to say it, but Rob you are one to talk about being a "douchekoala" Predators looks at least 1000 x's better than the last 2 AVP films...thank god
-
Robert Rodriguez is a strong argument for watching Predators.
