I prefer to think of the movie as a cross-over. At the end of Quantum Leap, Sam agrees to go on leaping and never get home. He leaps into the future for the first time, making it impossible for Al and Ziggy to track him down and since the Tardis had just crash landed when the Doctor was killed he couldn't say when he was. Sam's swiss cheesed memory melds into the Doctor's powerful aura like it did with Lee Harvey Oswald so that even he thinks he is the Doctor (explaining the delay in regenerating, the blue electricity in the regeneration, and his single heartbeat).

i first found doctor who when i was a kid in the 80s. on pbs at that time they were showing the jon pertwee years witch still to this day is probly one of if not my faverite doctors then it just stoped showing i was sad but i moved on .when the show returned in2005 i peed my pants with joy and quikly started making up for lost time by collecting the classic dvd as well as new.i saw the tv movie on utube and it might not be the best story in the whole whoniverse ITS DOCTOR WHO ! mcoy dies regeneration ,the master, companions tardis good stuff i must have this dvd its the only incarnation i dont have at lest some of other matt smith witch i will have all in good time. i do have the book placebo effect witch was pretty good so all i can say come on with it!

The movie is flawed, but I must echo the feelings of my fellow topless roboteers....McGann is indeed one of the best Doctors to have ever been. The weak links were the companions in my opinion. The reason it did not do well was from the US side. After pumping in money, Fox scheduled it for the same time as the Superbowl - and were somehow shocked at the figures being low. McGann is also currently, and ironically, the longest serving Doctor. Although he only had one TV outing, he was the Doctor in books, comics and the FANTASTIC audio plays for longer than any other actor who was 'currently' in the role.

The TV movie was actually pretty well received in the UK (compared to the US at least) so it isn't too surprising that the relaunch was influenced by it.
-
It'd be NICE to see the Time War, buuuuuuuuut I'm pretty sure it's incomprehensible to behold, as per Word of God. That said... SNIPPETS would be nice...
-
Bingo! Got it in one.
-
Finally. I can't believe Fox would let this much money slip between their grubbly fingers. Every Who fan either has the VHS copy or a DVD bootleg in the states. And I still enjoy the movie. Like it or not, the new series owes it exsistence to this made for TV movie. The new one, doesn't look like no John Nathan Turner production. And look how we got to explore the Tardis. http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Eye_of_Harmony Even down to the early 60's monitor above the console. Still enjoy it.
-
I agree totally. I was new to the Doctor Who fandom, having only seen the older ones on pbs before this. I loved him as the Doctor. Later I did fall for Tennant, but he was the first.
-
I have to agree with most people here. McGann was a great Doctor, from what little we saw of him, but the film was rubbish. It's even more muddled and nonsensical than the new series at its worst, and that's saying something.
-
I agree about the Big Finish Productions. Some of them are pure awesome. And long before the TV show got its reboot, the Big Finish Crew was writing mature, adult, story- and character-driven Doctor Who dramas for the world to enjoy.
-
Didn't Eric Roberts, of all people, play The Master in the TV Movie? Anyway, I haven't seen it since it was first broadcast so I'll certainly give it it's day in court.
-
McGann was a great doctor, but this movie is meh. It totally disregards canon in many ways. However, Big Finish released some great audio adventures for the 8th Doctor. I suggest you check them out, if you like McGann as the Doctor.
-
I dont think this means we'll get a different dvd to the new UK version coming out in the "Revisitations' box set. Several discs are getting a major upgrade, this one included along with "Talons of Weng Chiang" and "Caves of Androzani". And all the wish lists dvds listed on here can be found if you look in the right places! Because the chances of that horrific Dimensions in Time actually being released is nil. Ugh.
-
nice to see it since thought Paul should have been allowed a chance at playing the doctor longer. as for this meaning maybe the batman tv series rights being fixed. hell will be ice before that ever happens. just because the rights for this doctor who movie got fixed does is not a sign maybe by some miracle batman will finaly see dvd. for those rights are more complicated then what was holding up the u.s finaly getting the eighth doctors one go around on dvd here.
-
You should make a list of the five worst Doctors.
-
I LOVED that movie. I definitely plan to buy it.
-
Movie sucked. Had network fingerprints all over it (7th doctor shot down by LA gang bangers, around when movies like Colors were the rage? What an uncharismatic end to a great incarnation of the Doctor). Portrayal of the Master sucked. I'm not going to waste my time looking up the actor that did the portrayal. They just had to shave someone's head and make him kill someone to be the villain evidently (had to throw in that shining melting metal effect highlighted in terminator 2 to boot). Half Human? Crap. Paul McGann was great though. Like a gold ring in a pile of dog shit. It's still a gold ring, but it's in a pile of dog shit. Too bad, this movie had an opportunity to bring the Doctor back on the air, but it got too many people involved that just didn't get it. I have the VHS copy taped on the night it originally aired. Watch it once in a while hoping I'm wrong in my assessment. But it always ends with me shaking my head and wondering why.
-
I can see your point, however, I'm not sure if its a valid comparison. Lucas has been progressively sucking worse as time went on. However, Doctor Who has, as a whole, remained awesome. And remember it came back after an extended hiatus as well and proved to continue to be a strong product. I have faith in BBC.
-
P.S I think McGann is the hottest doctor. Had to be said. I wonder how many Tennant fans (a contingent of which I am part) will disagree.
-
Ironic seeing as it was meant as a pilot for America. I bought it from BBC...i have a region free dvd player. The only thing that didn't suck about that movie was Paul McGann. AND WOULD SOMEONE IN BBC PLEASE SHOW PAUL MCGANN DESTROYING GALLIFREY. I want to know how this was done. The destruction of the time lords should not just be a reference.
-
I've got nothing to do with this release, but I sent 2Entertain an e-mail a while back with a list of some of the things that I thought would make great extras if this ever got released over here: - The horrible "Dimensions in Time" mini-episode. Just to have it. - The "More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS" documentary from 1994. - "The Curse of Fatal Death" and any other parodies from the period between the two series. - Any documentaries or behind the scenes footage regarding the (thankfully) aborted American reboot that was considered before this movie came to be. It might not make a difference, but I'd say that this is our best chance at getting any of that, so please do what I did and e-mail 2Entertain with requests for them to put this stuff on there!
-
Yeah, I'm with you, the movie sucked ass but Paul McGann made a great Doctor. I'll still probably buy it when it comes out, though.
-
I vote against actually seeing the Time War. I have the feeling that it'll wind up like Star Wars: Episode I-III where the fans' imaginations were so much better than what Lucas put on the screen. Did any fan imagine the Trade Federation and their issue with galactic taxation which caused endless political debates in the Senate? lol
-
that's awesome... I have a bootleg dvd that I bought a few years back.. but I'd much rather have a new official copy, hopefully with commentary and other things with McGann.. he was my first doctor too, and while the movie isn't great, he's awesome... I've listened to some of the audio stories he's done for Big Finish, and it really makes me sad that he didn't get a proper season as the doctor, because it would have rocked. I'd love for them to do something with him and the Time War as well... at least so he can get a proper regeneration
-
I remember watching this when it was aired, but I can't tell you a thing about it. I can't even remember if I liked it or not. It just left no impression at all.
-
I don't even have a VCR hooked up anymore to watch my VHS recording from the original airing. - I suppose I could transfer to DVD, though...
-
And Stephen Moffat wrote it too!
-
I'd be much more interested in a nice DVD release of 'Dr Who and the Curse of Fatal Death'. That was a brilliant story with brilliant casting.
-
I'm excited, Ive never seen this. I do have a few books of "the continuing adventures of the eighth doctor. It'll be nice to see where his adventure started.
-
The movie was quite shitty, but McGann was a great Doctor. Glad to hear it's finally being made available again.
-
"Even the rights for something as complicated as the '60s Batman TV series could be worked out." That's not complicated. People make it out to be more complicated than it is. Fox owns the show. Warner Bros. owns the franchise. Both are idiots and afraid to print money, because that what a Batman TV DVD release would be doing. But yeah, looking forward to bringing the Eighth Doctor's lone televised appearance home on a solid medium.
-
I think i saw this on TV a year ago. It was kinda weird but I really liked it! They actually went all around the TARDIS to see all the crazy rooms and relics he has in them. I have always wanted the New Series to explore the other rooms of the TARDIS!
-
I'm excited for this, even though I wasn't a huge fan of the film, at least it kept Doctor Who going! And YES, Nur, I'm with you! Let's see a Time War movie!
-
You know what I'd like to see? The Time War. It is only logical to assume that Eight was the one involved in it, and if there's going to be another Doctor Who feature film, it should be about the Time War and Eight.
-
"Does this long-awaited DVD finally coming indicate that anything is possible, and even the rights for something as complicated as the '60s Batman TV series could be worked out?" Precisely, Rob! The only...possible...meaning.
-
I remember watching this as a kid and having little to no idea of what was going on but loving it anyway. First day purchase!
-
Yup. It's pretty prescient of the new series in a lot of ways, especially in terms of the set design and pacing in general. (And the VanDyke-less Master.)
-
Despite having a weak story, I thought McGann was perfect from start to finish in the TV Movie. I even liked McCoy and I'd never been a particular fan of him during his run. It's interesting to see how many elements of this seemed to be reflected in RTD's relaunch, including the romanctic relationship with the companion, the cavernous TARDIS interior, the main cast's names shooting towards the screen during the credits and a more bombastic, orchestral score to name but a few things. I'd love to know how much RTD was influenced by the movie versus RTD just identifying the same sort of things he felt were needed for a modern TV series.
-
Don't remember the movie much - other than I was jazzed to see the franchise reborn - then die again. Enjoyed McGann's portrayal and think he could have made it one of the better regenerations had he been given more of a chance.
-
I will be buying this the day of release. I have worn my VHS copy right out. I was 13 when that came out, and thought it was great. Even all the fan complaints couldn't turn my opinion around. It was actually my first start watching Doctor Who. Paul McGann will always be my favorite Doctor, because he was my first ;)
