Hello, McFly

As you’ve very possibly seen on a site whose editor didn’t take a nap during lunch, a tiny bit of the footage of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in Back to the Future has surfaced, as part of a documentary on the upcoming 25th anniversary Blu-rays. As we all know, Stoltz was originally cast as McFly, but replaced by Michael J. Fox after five weeks of filming, because director Robert Zemeckis thought the comedy wasn’t working. What I think is interesting is how obviously correct he is — all the footage of Stoltz shown above looks he’s in a dramatic, marginally scary sci-fi flick. It’s kind of neat, but I can also see why no one gave Zemeckis shit when he made the switch to Fox.
