I know a lot of you love Eureka, and I certainly don't have anything against it. But hopefully you'll admit when Eureka season 4 is the #1 seller on Amazon that it's not the most dynamic of DVD Days. Still, last week was pretty insane, so it's probably good we have a week to catch up.
• 13 Assassins
I've heard nothing but great things about Takeshi Miike's epic samurai flick. Can't wait to see it.
• Hobo with a Shotgun
Watch this. 'Nuff said.
• Transformers Japanese Collection: Headmasters
The first of the three Japan-only original Transformers cartoons. Shout Factory sent me a copy, so I'm actually going to do a review, but probably not until Thursday. Short version: It's quite insane, and gets progressively more Japanese, but it's still a lot of nostalgic fun.
• The Cape: Complete Series
The semi-beloved superhero series comes to DVD. I only watched a few episodes, and sometimes I loved it, and sometimes I hated it. Additionally, the show seemed to know how stupid it was sometimes, and somehow by wallowing in TV superhero tropes it seemed to transcend them... and then other times it just seemed dumb as hell. I honestly don't know which more accurately describes the series as a whole. Thoughts?
• Bloodrayne: The Third Reich Unrated Director's Cut
Finally, Uwe Boll's non-masterpiece as he wanted you to see it. See, that just sounds more like a punishment to me than something I would expect to have to pay money for.
• Best of Sesame Spoofs 1 & 2
I honestly don't know what the hell this is or what's on it, but I still felt it was worth mentioning, just in case it had "Spider-Monster" on it.
More links from around the web!
If you think Headmasters was insane, Rob, wait until you get to "Victory". Let's just say that you should try not to have a favorite there, because death is an all too frequent issue.
And regarding Uwe Boll's BloodRayne, I dunno man. On the one hand I hated how the asshole for butchering just about every single property he could grab with his grabby paws, but on the other, his works also serve as a cautionary tale on how NOT to do a popcorn flick. It's like, you just can't tell which one is diamond if you don't have cubic zirconia or glass prisms, you know?
The Cape was what Super-hero tv shows should not be. I mean, a gorram clown circus takes you in? Who thought of this? Were the writing team on the show Barnum and Bailey? They had such an amazing cast and some decent potential and they shit it away like an elephant does peanuts. I stopped watching aftr about 6 episodes. Even Summer Glau was not enough to make that show not smell like frakking clown shoes...
summer glau is the death knell for any tv show.period.i half expected TBBT to get canceled the week after she guest starred.
years from now, the Cape will be a footnote that is only remembered when people try to explain what Abed was doing in the flashback episode of Community.
The Cape wasn't bad. It was far better than No Ordinary Family, which I didn't even find watchable. I say it was better than several seasons of Smallville as well. What killed The Cape was that it was a new character instead of an established Marvel or DC hero. Because of that, people who would have watched it almost regardless of quality instead turned against it.
As for Hobo with a Shotgun, it is a modern grindhouse flick, truer to the style than even Machete.
Hobo With A Shotgun: it's like Troma, but intentionally good taste.
Then again, it's probably just me trying to spread attention to Canadian filmmaking. But it is a LOT of fun.
A pity the Sesame Street DVD doesn't have 'Miami Mice', bugger to that.
Also surprised that Rob called something TF-related 'fun'. Guess it's a special DVD Day after all...
He actually likes a lot of TF material. It's the movies that bounce his head off the dashboard and pee in his face.
Yes, but he says that he's not really into TF in a majority of TF-related articles.
Then again, perhaps he had been drinking when writing said articles.
BTW, Eureka Season 4.0 is $10 at best buy. If you're gonna be forced to by fucking half seasons, at least pay what they are worth.
Dammit, why does Season 4.0 of Eureka not have any blue on the cover. All other sets are blue and this one is now the odd one in my collection (yes I'm that damn picky).
As others are saying, if the Cape had been about the circus folks, it might have been good. The head circus guy (who had the cape) was the most compelling character, although not so compelling I will bother looking up his name.
Also: Cape, the Complete Series: Does that fill even one DVD?
I liked the idea of the cape. I could have been amazing. They had the cast, they had the idea. All that failed was the writting. And they knew nothing about villians. They set up a pretty good villian in the first episode. To bad thats the only time you see him
Man I hated Hobo with a shotgun. I just thought Drive Angry did everything it was trying to do better ...
two main things hurt the Cape. The premise that Chess(villain) framed the Cape's secret identity has being him but yet kept being Chess after the Cape guy was suppose to be dead 2. The Cape itself if it was about the Circus guys being modern day Robin Hoods would have been fun
1) Fleming/Chess was a sort of split-personality. Fleming framed Faraday (The Cape) at the start of the series, when Fleming was in complete control. At the time, Chess was a past demon that Fleming had thought he had locked away in his mind. As the series progresses, Chess seeps into Fleming's life more and more. (Nearing the end, Chess had even cut an unknown deal with Fleming's psychiatrist.)
Basically, I don't think Fleming was able to stop being Chess, even after using Faraday as his scapegoat.
2) I liked the idea that the Circus were criminals. It allowed for more potential conflict, which the series did dip into. You've got a hero who is assisted by a group of criminals in order to oppose a much stronger group, with both Faraday and the Circus knowing that when Fleming was out of the picture, they'd go from friends to enemies. You've also got the leader of the circus (Max) straddling the fence, seeing his protegee (The Cape) as a type of redemption while also still managing a criminal gang, and the stresses that straddling causes in each group (as neither Faraday nor the Circus know quite for sure whether Max will sell them out for the other.)
really slow dvd day for the only thing on the list that has my interest is the transformers japanse collection one and 13 assasins
I was all prepared to be pissy about the Eureka diss, bu then i realized that i would never buy it on dvd myself, and even though it's one of the best shows on these days, that's not saying much in it's defense.
Eureka is fun but season four was disappointing in my opinion, I'm hoping season five is better handled.
ah, apparently I meant the second half of season 4, stupid Syfy and their half seasons.
I can't stand time loop stuff like that, and if they wanted to reboot the cast roles I think there are better ways they could have handled that. I also found it rather cheap to make Kevin's autism magically disappear.
James Callis was fun though, and even if I disliked the time travel bit the historic setting was handled well.
Ahh, ok. Well I still disagree completely. Other than Stark still being absent (minus the one ep) I thought it was the best season so far.
I'm hoping the second half of season four is better than the first half, which I found very disappointing.
But...the second half of season four doesn't even start until next Monday. What in hell are you talking about?
I'm waiting more than a little impatiently for the new seasons of Archer and Sanctuary to hit DVD.
Dammit Netflix. Stop introducing me to new awesome stuff.
The Cape = Batman for mentally challenged twelve-year-olds...
So-awful-it's-good-please-god-help-me.
I only saw part of one episode of "The Cape", and it was a flashback to a discussion the guy had with his wife over breakfast about trying to have another kid.
She said, "How do you want your eggs?"
He said, "Fertilized."
And then I immediately changed the channel and never watched it again.
{{In fact, I'm not convinced it had a strong suit at all.}}
Well, it was only a cape made out of spider silk after all. Although they say spider silk is pretty strong, so...
But that is why it failed, Summer glau may be hot and a decent actress but the moment she works on a show it goes poof.
No, it was definitely a grotesque use of language and I'm surprised that bit even made it to air. It's pretty clear early on that The Cape's strong suit isn't the writing. In fact, I'm not convinced it had a strong suit at all.
Good luck with that - I'm not sure if my "ick factor" is higher than others' in that regard, but it (and all the dialogue up until that point) sure made me gag.
wow, that is one slow dvd day.
i love eureka, but i already saw it and don't need to see it again.
as for the rest, who cares... well, maybe the miike one.
