At a time when blockbuster budgets are facing extra scrutiny, Warner Bros. has halted pre-production on its live-action "Akira" remake, which Jaume Collet-Serra is set to direct. Studio confirmed Thursday that it shut down the project's Vancouver offices as the creative team reworks the story.Hopefully it will be delayed until the mountains crumble into the sea, but WB does seem pretty determined to make an incredibly shitty Akira movie that won't come close to recouping its $60-70 million budget. It'd be kind of admirable if it didn't make me want to punch every single WB studio executive in the dick....
As for "Akira," which has only "Tron: Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund locked, the studio is by no means pulling the plug. Insiders said a new writer will probably be brought on over the next two weeks to focus on character elements and particularly on the pic's look. While no one's yet been offered the job, studio is said to be eyeing Jonah Nolan ("The Dark Knight," "The Dark Knight Rises") and Michael Green ("Green Lantern").
WB prexy Jeff Robinov met with the "Akira" team to discuss several issues, including who would land the second lead opposite Hedlund. Choices had been narrowed down to Michael Pitt and Dane DeHaan, but the studio wanted to wait until after the holidays to decide. Now that decision will be delayed further.

Exactly no part of the Akira movie sounds like a good idea. I don't know, maybe it's the idea of ripping something from the context of 80s Japan and making it about 9/11, the inherent racism of hiring white guys to play Japanese guys, the addition (and consummation) of sexual tension in what's essentially a buddy movie because one thing Twilight's taught us is that you won't get a girl's ass anywhere near that theater seat unless the show is all about romance...
Notice that the second and third paragraph of that article snippet only emphasizes Hollywood's douchebaggery, where they were too busy talking among themselves about their own community to get this project completed instead of taking in any input from the general public and ignoring the universal nerd scorn?
Because I can see them sitting in their meeting rooms, eating their $300 lunches doing just that.
I just read that they're trying to get a Nolan (no, not Christopher) to rewrite. His brother, Jonathan. The movie will still be a mess. How hard is WB going to work to tell us they're arrogant and stubborn? They're doing a bang-up job!
Well, since it's a huge mess already, why not bring in Chris Nolan as well and add some Batman Begins to the mix?
Clown Gang: I don't know where Tetsuo is! I swear to God!
Kaneda: SWEAR TO ME!!
XD
I never thought I would actually start hoping that the world would end this year, but if this shitty abortion of a movie doesn't get canceled I might start...
Considering how adamant WB is to make SOME money out of the millions they have flushed unceremoniously down the crapper to make this horrid idea a reality, well, hold my hand, brother. Let us pray to Nyx to bring about The Fall!
BABYBABYBABYBABYBABY YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA -battle theme song plays- (cookies if you get the video game reference. XD)
Mostly dead? Please, QUICK someone send assassins to stop them before they reach Miracle Max! Or maybe they won't come up with a noble enough reason for him to perform the miracle of resuscitating this anyway. :P
Road trip I said. Kill execs to make sure this monster stays dead I said. But noooo one was willing to pay for the gas. Now we stuck with it coming back. Next time, someone break out the Visa and pay for the damn gas.
Personally, I hope WB does end up making this. Its going to be so funny when it gets ripped a million new assholes by fans and critics alike. Hollywood is an animal that never learns from its mistakes. (We're looking at you 'Last Airbender'!)
If anything, this movie would make everything that came before it look like a damn work of art. Including the Bayformers and the American Dragonball. Sooo...yay?
The trouble is The Last Airbender was a crap film that made a fair bit of money - the way this film is going it's more in danger of being a Jonah Hex.
I was almost looking forward to seeing this movie, too... if only to see the trainwreck.
No offense to Johnny Yong Bosch, but I was pissed when I learned they redubbed Akira, so imagine how THIS makes me feel...
... I want to injure someone.
Actually watching the Akira BD now. Honestly, I'm up in the air on the newest dub. It's better executed, but gawds I'm tired of hearing, Vash, Fey, Spike, etc. over and over and over again. I need to get my remastered DVD and see if the video looks better, I remember it looking better than what I'm seeing on the BD.
Weird. I am eating Cheerios as I read this.
Fortunately they don't taste like someone shit in them. (Though I lament with much Nerd Rage at the news presented here.)
Points of failure:•No Asian cast.•No Asian production.•No Neo Tokyo•No Geinoh Yamashirogumi Soundtrack.•Gaijin named Tetsuo and Kaneda.•Not enough arsenic in the Hollywood execs. cocaine.
•No Asian cast.
What the hell is up with Hollywood and their frankly insane refusal to cast Asian actors in lead roles for films? It makes absolutely no sense. You could chalk up John Wayne being cast as Genghis Khan to old-timey racism, but shouldn't we be beyond that today? They'll go to ridiculous lengths to white-wash the lead roles, even when it just doesn't make sense at all.
Because Asian's aren't marketable as wide as Whites, Blacks, and even Hispanics. They're the lowest on the demographic totem pole because there are less of them in the states then any other race. Take a look at the upcoming movie 47 Ronin where Reeves plays an original character because they want a white male. They're afraid that much like with movies with a prominent Black cast, the film will lose its white audience. Now with these mostly Black movies its okay. They still draw in a lot of money from the large percentage of Blackmericans. Asian American population however doesn't have the same numbers, and therefore studios are afraid to take the chance on releasing a mostly-Asian movie. Is it right? No. Not really. But is their logic ground in market research, and a desire to make money of their movies more then bigotry? Yeah probably. Its a really complicated subject when you sit down and think about it logically without really taking a concrete side to be honest. I'm not even sure what side I fall on because I think both sides have valid points.
Long story short: Studios are afraid of scarring away the larger movie going audience by not featuring their races prominently because they're featuring a bigger minority.
Er, no, please don't do that. Don't want your poor son to get beaten up by little racist boys at school because of something that I said...
Unless if you're Japanese or married to a Japanese, then by all means, please, name your son Akira. With meanings like "Bright", "Intelligent", and "Clear", it's a beautiful name. XD
Or, you know, call it something else and tag it "Inspired by Akira" if they're so goddamned scared of Asian Culture chasing away potential audiences. I mean, for C'thulu's sake, it's Japanese in the TITLE!! How many white little boys do you see running around named Akira?
Damn!
And for those crusty white supremacists of Hollywood executives, I have two words for them: "Ninja Assassin".
I don't think I've confused either.
"Akira has the perfect plot for an American action movie." I'd agree, 1st we remove the setting, then we replace the culture. Next we'll simply add 8-10 years to the age of the characters...Stop me before this actually resembles Akira.
You confuse race and plot. Akira has the perfect plot for an American action movie.
Now Asian's are marketable during kung-fu/karate booms. But then the market tends to be over saturated and we end up losing that marketability for a while.
Hollywood rarely seems to want to try when it comes to casting Asian leads in movies that aren't some sort of martial arts laced film of some sort. Let's just say fuck the demographics for a minute. Asians, blacks, latinos, and people of all sorts of backgrounds can view a movie with white people cast in them, why does it continue to have to be so risky the other way around? Akira isn't like The Last Airbender, where those roles are open since the motif of it is Asian, not so much the people. Akira is a distinctly Japanese work and material. To throw all of that out goes from "disrespectful" to "spitting in an entire culture's face" territory.
Why not just go for the Asian casting, and maybe, just MAYBE it can stand a chance in the foreign market among east Asian-pacific nations. Right now, this prospects on this thing are looking slim. Those who actually like the source material will surely hate it, that's already a slim number, the grossly offended will avoid it like the plague leaving only the mildly curious left. There's no solid built in fanbase large or strong enough to make this thing money. The slimming budget is a sign of waning confidence. I'm quite sure Warners is spooked by the online buzz.
Warner Bros. is on a roll flushing beloved fan properties down the toilet that are not named Batman, and even that was sunk at one point. They should really do themselves the favor of euthanizing this thing and sweeping it under the rug.
Lead roles? How about any roles in Asian based source material in general. At least they got it right in "Letters from Iwo Jima." Would have been a bit of a stretch casting Matt Damon for that movie.
They got it (a bit) right with Ninja Assassin. Though, I'm a bit incensed at them casting Rain, a Korean, as a clearly Japanese character. They're probably shrugging and going, "Eh, Koreans, Japanese, who cares, they look alike to me!"
Ass.
Hollywood can't get its head round giving decent roles to women (especially women over 40) most of the time, let alone anyone homosexual or non-Caucasian.
I'm still waiting for a gay character that is neither a flaming homosexual parody and/or a metrosexual, tuxedo-wearing, upper echelon classy rich and part of the 1% gay dude, Hollywood. Pull your head out of your ass and get with the times!
I imagine WB have put too much money and time into this for them to give up on it now. After all the endless delays, they won't accept having nothing to show for it. I think they know it'll be forgotten pretty quickly, they just want it off their slate and to make back the costs.
Why? WHY? WB, If you're so intent on throwing gross amounts of money at something that no one really will want to watch, then I'm in need of funding for my movies and theatrical endeavors...
If Warners can throw money at shit like Jonah Hex and Sucker Punch, then hell, everybody should be able to get a shot. It ain't fair.
They could save themselves and everyone else a lot of pain and loss of money by just re-releasing the original, remastered REAL Akira movie in theaters again. People would love that, they would happily spend money on it, and it would be so easy. But of course that would make too much sense and too difficult to milk into a trilogy.
Leaving aside WB's ineptitude, Akira is 25 years old next year, I can see it getting a cinema re-release maybe.
In Japan, perhaps, where they respect the source materials more than Hollywood can ever do.
