• By which I mean a new new game? A new gaming IP that doesn't star any previously established Nintendo characters, that isn't a retread of an older game, and is an honest-to-god game instead of a Nintendogs-esque sim or Brain Age-style trivia game? The answer is yes, and that game is Dillon's Rolling Western. It's just a downloadable 3DS game, but as tipper SlyDante points out, this might be Nintendo's first new real game in about a decade. Worth mentioning.
• Meanwhile, Bandai Namco, Capcom and Sega are teaming up for some kind of Nintendo project. No one knows what the hell it is. I plan to be very excited about it until it's inevitably revealed it's some kind of Japanese resource management dating sim set in a convenience store or something that will never come to America. • The Wii RPG The Last Story, made by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, will finally be coming to North America this year. I'd make my traditional joke about dusting off your Wiis, but I think it's more likely you'll have to take them out of storage at this point.

Of course half of those weren't released in the West until very recently, and some still haven't (NOA for the longest time seemed much more scared of new franchises than NOJ, though releasing Xenoblade and The Last Story helps matters a lot). Also, isn't Spirit Camera basically a Fatal Frame game? Same developers, pretty much the same concept.

1. I did not know that about Intelligent Systems. 2. I honestly did not hear about Sakura Samurai until today (& Giant Bomb says the developer was Grounding Inc., but I'll take your word), especially since it's <i>US</i> release date was February 2, a mere 3 weeks ago. 3. Steel Diver came off as more of a simulator to me, isn't exactly comparable to these other games in terms of concept or feel, and according to most reviews, was boring, slow, & forgettable anyway. But as for 1 & 2, at least, I do indeed apologize. Frankly, this raises another question: Why is Nintendo releasing these new games, & yet doing jack & squat to promote them?? Especially since most criticism for the 3DS now is for it's lack of software. I mean, if notable XBLA & PSN game can get a good promotional push, then why not these? Dammit Nintendo, do not hold back on this kind of stuff. But yeah, my apologies.

I go into a game store, what do I see on the Wii shelf? The same sequels I already bought on release, ports of GAMECUBE games (And not good ones either. No Wind Waker, just Pikmin 1 and Mario friggin' Tennis...), and apart from them? MOUNTAINS of shovel ware. Very few third party games, very few exclusives, just shovel ware. This is for the PAL region mind you, there might be better Wii games out there in the North American and Japanese regions. I wouldn't know (Xenoblade Saga is the only exception). Fair enough on Wii owning Grandmas. But if Sony could sell the first Playstation to the casual crowd on a handful of proper games (Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Solid, Wipeout etc.) then there is no reason Nintendo cannot do the same, AND keep their hardcore fanbase pacified. The Wii mote is a cheap gimmick simply because that's how most games utilise it. Very few games take advantage of the potential it has to make playing a more visceral and involving experience, such as in Skyward Sword. So the developers may be more at fault than Nintendo in that regard, you are right on the money there. By developer friendly I meant having hardware that could support the kind of modern games high profile developers want to create. And you can't make those kind of games on Second Genration Gamecube specs. Technology and gimmicks should always come second to GAMEPLAY in any case, but try finding that in today's saturated market!!! In the end it always seems to come down to third party support. Nintendo may currently dominate the console market share, but the quantity of third party games on their system has fallen behind even further with their console's capabilties. I'm more a handheld gamer these days anyhow, but I still wish Nintendo would do more to earn my money.

That's a little unfair. Sure, that 95% shovelware was true a few years ago, but it's since equaled out. You DO know that shovelware exists in abundance for EVERY system, right? As for "Grandmas," that's just it. They don't WANT anything beyond Wii Sports or a handful of others. Can you explain how to get Grandma from whacking a tennis ball around to being able to before a backflip over a demon to shoot them in the back of the head? So, if the Wii remote is such a cheap gimmick, how come both Sony and Microsoft mimicked it? Because it sold and was popular. Hell, I've seen a few PC motion controllers. Nintendo is not developer-unfriendly. Developers just feel they NEED to include motion controls, which Nintendo always said was an "option." Sony, actually, has the worst developement kit from what I've heard from developers. They make stuff on XBox and then port it.

My biggest problem with the Wii is the sheer abundance of shovel ware available. Seriously, shovel ware makes up roughly 95% of the Wii's overall gaming library. NINETY-FIVE PERCENT PURE CRAP, FIVE PERCENT ACTUAL VIDEOGAMES. And maybe two percent of that total number is actually WORTH buying. That quality-to-quantity deficit ratio is staggering. The Gamecube, for all its lack of third party support, had a LARGE stable of second and first party games, enough to somewhat make up for the way Sony and Microsoft got all the new IPs and developer contracts. I'd be less upset with Nintendo if their consoles placed more emphasis on being developer friendly than on cheap gimmicks. And as far as most developers are concerned, that's all the Wii-mote is. A cheap gimmick. Wii Sports got your Grandma playing video games? Great news! Now lets work out how to get her (and every other casual gamer) playing REAL GAMES, games of quality, rather than flooding the shelves with crap only kids who don't know any better will enjoy, and sequels to franchises played by thirty year old moaning fanboys who bitch about a lack of originality as they open their wallets up without fail. A console for both the hardcore and the casual gaming market is not impossible! Nintendo could have its cake and eat it too, if only they got their console specs up to scratch with their competitors, and exercised a bit of restraint in what gets the Nintendo Seal of Approval. 'Cause I'm pretty sure Ninjabread Man didn't go through any sort of strenuous quality control...

Pushmo was developed by Intelligent Systems, a first party Nintendo developer responsible for Paper Mario and WarioWare, Sakura Samurai was developed in house by Nintendo, Steel Diver was co-developed by Nintendo EAD. Those all came out last year.

I have two Wii's and they get a lot of use. The second more as a Netflix device than gaming unit, but I still play a few games in the bedroom here and there. The one in the living room gets used for Netflix and a lot of games. Right now I'm working on Super Paper Mario, and the young'in is working on Red Steel 2.

Hence why Kirby is probably one of my favorite gaming franchises. But for a company that's created some of the most iconic games & characters of all time, I just wish they'd put more effort into adding to said stable of iconic games & characters. Also, Warioware is based off of an existing Nintendo character/franchise, so I don't count it, despite what other commentors say.

If you count Pokemon you should count Ouendan, Baten Kaitos, Xenoblade, and Starfy at the very least. They're all owned by Nintendo or a Nintendo owned company, just like Pokemon.

Well they are making innovative things, it's just that they are often put in existing franchises. The Kirby series is the main source of this. Epic Yarn was wonderful and great looking, but it was adapted into a Kirby game. Oh and Warioware is from 2003 as well, so it also fits into your decade criteria.

The point is, <i>this</i> is something 100% brand new, & Nintendo <i>themselves</i> are finally creating some new characters & games to go with them. Also, I am not complaining about the lack of IPs on Nintendo systems, or the quality of said IPs, I'm just saying this is a new <i>Nintendo</i> franchise - not just a DS or Wii franchise - & that we finally have another one is pretty awesome.

Look, even if all this is the case, why should it matter? Why is Nintendo in the crosshairs for this? By the logic of "Nintendo needs to develope the IP for it to count" is utter bullshit. By that logic, NO ONE has made anything original in YEARS. Outsourcing developement and sequels are ridiculously commonplace. I don't get the issue, anyways. Games as well as movies are BUILT on sequels. The industry needs them. So what's so wrong, as long as the product is still good?

Nope. If Mario was an existing franchise, & Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Dr. Mario, etc., all count as "Mario" games, then the same goes for Wario.

Well if the games before being put onto the Kinect as a lead company didn't do terrible they probably wouldn't have been repurposed. Reviews being good or not, their sales didn't warrant anything great. But overall MS and Sony are still doing better with new IPs then nintendo.

Captain Rainbow has a bunch of Nintendo characters wandering around in it, Sakura Samurai is a play on Nazo no Murasamejou (an older NES game), Pushmo and Rhythm Heaven both pop out Nintendo characters and events, Baten Kaitos is now a Nintendo franchise... basically, they make LOTS of stuff, but people whine, "WHERE'S THE NEW ZELDA?!?! GLArjaoirhaowrhwoarhthisanushasalotofportraitsandistastefullydecoratedGLaraohg."

There were more in Japan, they didn't come out here. There are tons of good Wii games, but most people don't bother to search them out.

I usually don't keep up with games for the XBox Live arcade, mainly because I kinda ditched Xbox after they turned Rare into a Kinect-producing machine.

Nintendo released the 2nd most powerful console of Gen VI, no one bought it, third parties didn't develop for it, and then people bitch that the Wii isn't another powerhouse console and that Nintendo has abandoned the core.

Well for Microsoft how about Alan Wake, The Gunstringer, 'Splosion Man, Ms. Splosion Man, The Maw, Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley, all by MS, The difference being MS has first party development studios, rather then just calling everything Nintendo. As for Sony. Look at the Last of us, or The last Guardian, ICO, Shadows of the Colossus. There are a ton of MS and Sony new IP's, that are directly from the main company they just don't call everything NINTENDO. In general Nintendo has lost me as a customer because any of their exclusive games have not been that great for me, Skyward sword was their last chance and it did nothing for me.

I wanted to trade in my Wii to get some credit towards PS3 games after I bought my PS3, but my girlfriend complained that she liked having the Wii for Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit. She never plays either of them, mind you. But there it sits, in my entertainment center, doing nothing.

I totally see where you're coming from, dude. Thing is, I haven't seen Microsoft try and make a new IP in a long while, especially after they decided to shitcan Rare into a Kinect shovelware company. Sony has tried stuff like Patapon and LittleBigPlanet, yeah. Forgot about those. However, the point is that pretty much every developer, once they make a game that puts them on the map, WILL continue to milk the franchise for all it's worth, like how Capcom's pretty much become the Monster Hunter/Resident Evil/Street Fighter/Dead Rising company.

Oooh...This could take a while for me to properly reply to, so I'll handle this as quickly as possible. First, I'm not saying Nintendo's sequels are bad, far from it. Maybe a bit overrated, but still damn good. Second, your Sony & Microsoft examples are a tad off, since they didn't actually <i>develop</i> those games. You do make a good point, but I'd still say Sony & MS have still at least tried some notable exclusives in recent years. I guess what annoys me about Nintendo when it comes to this, though, is that Nintendo always gets praised - especially in recent years - as "the innovators of the gaming world", a "creative force", & other similar terms, so to see people drool over their supposed creativity when they release <i>the same damn ten franchises over & over</i> does get annoying after a bit. For all of their innovations in the hardware department, they barely come close to matching that level of creativity when it actually comes to developing games for it. ...So really, it's not so much about the quality of the games, but rather Nintendo's inability to take a chance on developing a new IP. <i>Publishing</i> one, maybe, but I'd like to see Nintendo dazzle us with some new creations straight from themselves for once.

Just because you don't play them and they don't get as much fame (ironically because the people crying out for IPs ignore most games that aren't Mario or Zelda) doesn't mean there aren't teams of people working their butts off on them.

"this might be Nintendo's first new real game in about a decade" Why do people complain about Nintendo continually making entries in established franchises and excuse, say, Sony for sticking to God of War, InFAMOUS and Uncharted, or Microsoft for basiclaly only having two good franchises (Halo and Gears of War) and one okay one (Fable)? Or how about Bethesda, who makes The Elder Scrolls and Fallout? Or how about people complaining when Capcom DOESN'T make new entries in some of their established franchises, like Mega Man, Ace Attorney or Darkstalkers? I've said it before, and I'll say it again. When a game developer finds a game that makes money (and, for bonus points, gets good reviews), they'll continue to make sequels. Some game companies don't even really improve from game to game (Capcom basically added new bosses/weapons to the same game engine to the first Mega Man series after four, and they were still good; Activision basically doesn't change anything in their yearly MWF and formerly-yearly Guitar hero sequels), but Nintendo actually does try to improve. Pokemon Black and White, quite frankly, kicked the ass of Diamond and Pearl, which was easily the worst generation of Pokemon. And then you have Twilight Princess. The ONLY time I felt a Zelda game didn't try to improve on its predecessors, TP was basically just a bigger, more empty Ocarina of Time. And it was succeeded by Skyward Sword, which, at least in my opinion, made up for all of TP's flaws by being incredibly fucking awesome. And then you got Super Mario Galaxy, which was the true heir to Mario 64's legacy that Super Mario Sunshine couldn't even hope to succeed. For all the shovelware they allow on the Wii and DS, and for all the crappy Wii *INSERT ACTIVITY HERE* games they make, Nintendo at least tries to improve with each installment. So does Valve, and Bioware, and Bethesda, and hell - even Sega's started sucking less with their games. Compare Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors to Sonic 2006 - Colors was, if nothing else, a step in the right direction; Generations was a pretty great sidescroller that faltered in the last few levels due to an annoyingly high difficulty; and Sonic 2006 was an abomination. That puts Nintendo above Microsoft, Sony, and Capcom in my eyes. And I LIKE Capcom and Sony.
