The Space Battleship Yamato remake/movie doesn't premiere in Japan for a couple of weeks, but that didn't stop Bandai from putting this 10-minute clip of Yamato 2199 online. It's pretty gorgeous, and I imagine any Yamato/Star Blazers fan is losing his/her mind with joy right now, and justifiably so. If you're not a Yamato/Star Blazers fan, however, but just want to a real awesome space battle, I'd give it a watch anyways. Thanks to Steve H. for the tip.
More links from around the web!
LOSING MY MIND. RIGHT. NAO!!! -runs around screaming like a rabid fanboy for ten minutes-
Ahem. Thank you, dear Robert, for providing this wonderful piece of nostalgia. I am delighted to inform you that I shall be first in line come opening day. Pity that it shall be a month late than the Japanese opening day, but ah well, what can one do, eh?
And now, more losing of my mind! -runs around screaming like a rabid fanboy again-
oh, Japanese pop culture. I love you so. But no matter how many times you re-fight the Pacific War (1937-1945), you still lost.
Oh American mindset. We love you. But no matter how many times you brag about your victories, you still lost the Vietnam War (1959 - 1975).
Stings when the shoe is on the other foot, doesn't it?
Good lord, this is incredible...It's clearly the same as the original show, but just ...more of it. If that makes any sense.
'Scuse me for a minute - I'l be in my bunk, weeping manly tears of joy...
"Weeping manly tears of joy", men have such cute names for "raising the Yamato".
Well, I figured "firing the Wave-Motion Gun" to be a bit 'on the nose', as it were... ;)
totally agree. I'll be prowling the Internet from now until some stalwart fansubbers release English dub. It can't come out soon enough.
If you have a link on subtitle download, please don't be shy with the rest of us, alright buddy? I mean, while this will premiere ontheaters here, I really don't want to bankrupt myself over repeated viewings. XD
For the record, I ceased watching promos and previews several weeks ago because I've already seen enough to know I want to buy it--and I want the experience to be as fresh as possible. (Y'know, considering they're updating a property almost as old as I am. {g})
Man, if they can make that last stand of the Earth Defense Force that exciting, I can wait to see what they do with some of Yamato's big battles. Nice use of cg ships too, I only noticed in a couple shots, and it's integrated really well.
This is obviously a love letter to the original cartoon. The shots, directing, design and even music ALL nod to it. They were very careful in capturing what made Yamato (aka Star Blazers) as great as it was.
Now, if you'll excuse me - I need to watch this a few hundred times more...
...in my bunk.
My heart sang when they didn't have artificial gravity...Then it dipped with the ships took a right hand turn...Then they all closed to visual range to fight and I knew I should stop watching as they fiddled with their targeting system, which at that range really could have been a post sight...Meh to the space battle - I'll give it the benefit of the doubt on story.
It's only one in an endless sea of "intellectual properties" that makes it seem like, in space, no matter how many thousands of ships you are in command of, no matter how many guided lasers and endless array of missiles, "every" battle is like having a knife fight in a stand-up shower stall. At least it isn't as bad as the opening from the Revenge of the Sith.
I understand they're going for a visual effect and some sort of WWI or WWII metaphor but it annoys me anyway, just like open flames on a spaceship... like the ever present braziers on spacecraft in Stargate... because I'm a nerd about such things and I start to think how many peoples worth of oxygen does that consume and how much CO2 and soot and ash does it spew out and what kind of life support system would be required to scrub all that out of the air and what kind of lunatics would permit such stupidity?
If you want an anime series with more realistic space combat try Starship Operators. No visual range combat and hours of navigation to get into firing position.
Of course you're right, however being a nerd I enjoy complaining about the things that I enjoy.
Agreed, but at least when maneuvering, the ships were using actual RCS thrusters. There was some good mixed in with the bad.
By virtue of its mere existence, this is instantly better than that piece of shit live-action version.
