I'm almost relieved. I hated the turn Alita took with the retconned ending and 'new story,' it barely felt like Alita to me. And anyway, even if James Cameron didn't go that route... I adore the original far, far too much to see anyone else's interpretation of it. Alita never tried to be sexy, (though she was drop dead gorgeous,) she had her flaws, she wasn't your typical heroine with sass and flair. She was a wounded soul trying to find the truth about herself and the world around her, and the only way she could was through fighting. I just doubt that any Hollywood rendition would do the magic of the first books justice.
The reason James Cameron is postponing/cancelling Battle Angel Alita?
Walt Disney World. Cameron is forging ahead with Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 because Disney will be putting Avatar-Land in the Animal Kingdom Park.
Oh, for the Record, that pic above is terrible. Long Leg and whatever. BAA is chokefull with great stills. This pic...i don't know why rob picked it, i barely identified it as Alita/Gally.
thank you guys i have been looking for this anime for years i could not remember the name, i saw it on Channel 4 years ago back when they showed proper anime late at night on the weekend this was the time i also saw the original Fist of the North Star for the first time, a big huge thanks i am now downloading it.... :D
The anime is O.K.
But i strongly strongly suggest u read the Manga. The Anime is just a tiny tiny fragment of the Manga and incomplete. Like i said it's not a bad Anime but compared to the Manga it's a Aperitif in the Shadow of a 9-course Gourmet Meal.
I actually think I still haven't seen the anime. My friend who loved the manga and suggested it to me said the anime was just okay in comparison. Since it's hard to find, I never really bothered checking it out.
Manga and anime has the same relationship as books and movies on western shores, though it's more determined by which one is the original source. If the manga is the original source, the anime is not going to be as good, and vice versa.
But then there's also cases like the Violinist of Hamelin, where the manga is a perfect blend of insane hilarious comedy and heart-wrenching tragedy, whereas the anime took itself waaaaaay too fucking serious.
Eh, not always the case. Some times mangaka come up with a really interesting concept that is just too difficult to portray in static images. FLCL is a prime example of this.
Oh shit. Clicking on the original article at that DailyWhat site... I actually met that Alita cosplayer.. Riddle / Lafiel.. and I think it was taken at the con I met her at. She also had made a metal Damascus Blade.. but had to store it in some art show because it was metal and thus not allowed as cosplay at the con.

Oh, um... *cough* excuse me a minute. I just, uhh... need to go change real fast.
No reason.
On the plus side, a long delay means there's a chance we'll get an actual cyborg playing Alita.
My money's on Helen Mirren.
Meh. James Cameron needs to make a new version of Sink The Bismarck. Imagine using the technology he used to film Titanic, applied to the greatest battleship story... AWESOME.
I generally don't like James Cameron's films. And the few that I do like I tend to have some heavier than usual criticism for.
His continued threats to make a Battle Angel film have done very little to soften my mood.
Back in 2005 or so I remember reading an interview wherein Cameron stated that his Alita adaptation would expand on the character because her inconsistent powers and abilities were a problem for him and he wanted to bring some consistency to the character.
That is, one of the worst cases of a film maker displaying a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material that I have EVER heard.
That would be on par with a director saying "I like Batman as a character, I'm a huge fan...in my movie I'm going to expand on him a bit and make him a little darker. It never made any sense to me why he always let these dangerous villains live."
Is nobody else going to comment on that leg? Yikes. Doesn't look like it belongs on a human.
Where does Titanic 2 and 3 fit into this schedule? You can't tell me that James Cameron hasn't thought about making a sequel or two to his first billion-dollar movie. Yes, I know he goes back to the Titanic every few years and makes IMAX movies, but where's the sequel where Rose finds a frozen Jack and thaws him out?
I love the nerd rage and hate for a man whose last 2 movies grossed almost 4 billion worldwide.
So? What do box office profits have to do with quality? And typing both "nerd rage" and "hate" doesn't make your point more effective, asshole.
Of corse. Box office profits = quality. Didn't you know Micheal Bay's Transformers trilogy is the greatest sci-fi trilogy EVER MADE! (Obvious sarcasm, is obvious)
DAMMIT, JIM! I'm a manga fanboy, not a patient person.
This is why I really hate Avatar I don't think it's that bad a movie like a lot of haters... but it's shit compared to how awesome an Alita movie would be.
If it wasn't for his amazing work in undersea documentaries and exploration itself, I'd surely despise the guy at this point.
When this movie finally gets made next decade or something, it better be amazing and spot on to the book after all this damn time.
Also.. just to toss it out there... John Glover as Desty Nova.
I have waited 15 Years for this to happen and Cameron is my First Choice to direct BAA/Gunnm. I would rather wait another 15 years for a Movie that's true to the Original and blows me away, rather then a Rush Job. I learned patience long before.
Also i have very mixed Feelings about the Project:Pro:- Cameron has a Reputation of making great Sci-Fi Action and not fucking them up (Avatar was not great, but seriously, we compared it to the Films he made before and those were fanatastic).- The creative Team got a several Meter large Model of Tiphares hovering above their Heads, making their Workplace a copy of the Scrapyard. How cool is that!
Contra:- Everything Rob said above.- The creative Team in charge got a Reputation of turning everything to Shit it touches.- Cameron wants to make the Rollerball Ark. The weakest Story, i nearly consider it to be a Filler. But it's also the probably easiest to film as a Standalone Movie (except the origins Story) and i hope he tries to do it the Star Wars Way. Picking an action loaded (read mass compatible) Story from the Middle and tell the whole Story if it's a financial Success.
Take your Time James, I'll wait. But don't expect me to watch Avatar 2. Hell NO!
I dunno. The initial arc seems perfect for Cameron's taste. It has class warfare on an epic scale. Titanic has nothing on the Scrapyard and Tiphares / Zalem. Though i can kinda see them trying to fit both into the first movie, pretty much compacting rollerball into the first arc.And really, i can't blame him for trying to incorporate what could be some of the most amazing action scenes in cinema history.
'"Battle Angel' is just a great, kick ass story. [At the same time, Battle Angel] would have to be pried out of my cold dead fingers."
Hey, that sounds like a challenge to me!
I used to read Battle angel as a teen. Can't remember anything about it, but seeing that drawing up there, I realize why I liked it so much as a 15 year old boy.
The Last Order run has kind of lagged a bit over the last half decade or so with the Zenith Of Things Tournament but it just ended in the last couple of months and it looks like the action is going to Mars now which is really what I have been longing for since I first picked up BAA at the end of the Motorball era.
Even though it has lagged, it has also really developed a robust back story and a really rich world/solar system with a fairly large and develo. Sure the guy on the Pyramid was a bit lame, but the creator's desire to populate the tournament with a diverse cast is clear. The early series had so many questions that have been extremely satisfactorily answered for me and I am still looking forward to more.
Desty Nova is a great villain.
Kidna torn with the ZOTT battles. On one hand, there are some amazing characters and monsters. On the other.. it's kinda become a generic fighting manga... even with the crazy post singularity cyberpunk action.
Some of the Fighers are pretty cool thou. Love Sechs and Toji, and some of the crazy fighing techniques, the teams form other Planets have used. And yes Desty Nova is made of awesome, let's celebrate with some Pudding.
The man could dive to the bottom of the ocean and suffer no harm, his ego would sustain him. Thanks Jim,looking forward to Titanic 2.
And to think he was "Shooting both trilogies con-currently".James,give the rights to David Cronenberg ,already
He is also busy founding Planetary Resources.
Yep Cameron is official founding the RDA/Weylund-Yutania.
So we are all pretty much fucked I think.
Didn't James Cameron already did Alita? I'm pretty sure I've seen that before...
Oo, no... Wait... That was Dark Angel... My bad!
Do you know that for a fact, or are you just surmising? I could believe it, but it seems a little far fetched to promote a TV series just to get an audience reaction for the movie crowd.
More Fact then Rumor. It's been a confirmed Fact in the BAA-Scene for a long Time. Calling it a Test might be a lil bit wooly. But as far as i know J.C. wanted to make BAA for a long Time and Dark Angel was a Testbed.
I didn't like DA much, it was a too cheesy ripoff for my Taste, but if it Creates a market in the USA for the sake of BAA i'm fine with it.
Heh, they are a little similar, now that I think about it. One is a '20-minutes-in-the-future', genetically altered, super human, cyber-noir while the other is a distant future, post-apocalyptic, cyborg, cyberpunk deal, but they do have a good number of parallels in theme and supporting cast.
That was such a great show, too. I really wish it didn't get canned after just one season.
He "likes the story too much to let anyone else direct it"?
Sounds like James Cameron has a.../puts on sunglassesTitanic ego. YEEEAAAAHHH
Awright, bro! If anyone needs me, I'll be over here, drinking iced tea with the other cool kids.
(The iced tea is made out of icebergs, that is how it is relevant to the joke.)
