The horrible, soulless automatons at Entertainment Tonight will have the first look at the World War Z movie starring Brad Pitt in a couple of days, but they were kind enough to give us a first look at the first look, and... boy, it does not look particularly good. Maybe it's because it bears only a passing resemblance to the book (as long rumored), maybe it's because The Walking Dead has been killing it this season (pun intended SO HARD) or maybe it's because even I'm getting tired of zombies at this point, but nothing about WWZ looks exciting to me. In fact, the only memorable part of this preview is the cascade of zombies over the truck, but even that looks less like a zombie invasion and more like a horde of slightly decomposing lemmings. I still think that WWZ would have worked better as a TV series, done in the style of a pseudo historical documentary. You would have interview footage intersperced with the actual events of the zombie war. It'd be different, interesting, and more accurate to the book.
This, though...this just looks like another god damned zombie movie. Also, what the hell is with that wave of zombies? The ONLY thing that I thought looked sort of good was that shot of army guys fighting the zombies from on top of what looked like cars, and that was only because I got Battle of Yonkers images in my head. But I bet they fuck that up too.
Jeez. This is gonna suck. Somebody, please do this book the justice it deserves and make it a documentary esque TV show.

Whelp.. I have still yet to read my copy of the book.. but from what all my friends told me.. that is the exact opposite of the damned book.
Then again, Hollywood did pretty much flip the ending of I Am Legend.. with its zombie/vampire esque monsters.. on its head and completely go against the entire meaning of the novel. They turned Will Smith's character from the devil of the new humanity into the Jesus future and savior of all mankind. Just a bit of an ego trip and tacked on Hollywood ending. I am a Christian and I was offended by how many shots they had of the cross in that, and it was on a woman who never was supposed to be in the story at that!
I doubt they will fuck it up as much as that turd, but this does not bode well..

The style of the book doesn't seem consistent with film, it would probably be better off as a series of individual tales on tv. That said, I can see that walking dead already more than fulfills this role on television, leaving no room for lesser zombie stories. Survival of the fittest (zombie fiction)

YES! I was just thinking that. It would work better as a TV series or mini series. No idea who can or how to afford the budget though.
I like it when the announcer says "It's ET and World War Z". I think it would be great to have E.T. show up in the movie and say something like "Eliot phoned home, now I'm making a house call, Die bitches!" and use some sort of alien zombie death ray on them.

I think if they billed this as "a movie set in the WWZ universe" that this could be something I would be interested in. What I just saw? Not so much.

I was introduced to the Romero and the zombie genre in 2003 by a roommate and friend who had a giant poster of Night of the Living Dead with the creepy little girl zombie.
In the decade since.. moreso the last few years.. yeah.. damn.. it's been over saturated and watered down and fed as a paste to mainstream audiences to a disgusting degree. Even when I first saw Johnathan Coulton perform Re: Your Brains live it was still pretty under the radar of most Americans. Now they're fucking everywhere.
I fear Steampunk will be the next nerd genre to be lost to the casuals and norms.
@TheXenos Steampunk has technically been around since '65 with Wild Wild West, but unlike the remake of Night of the Living Dead it has never had the one success that could break across peoples "entertainment barriers"

For heaven's sake... I think my mom is more into Walking Dead than I am at this point. And she always said she never liked those zombie movies I liked. She always preferred vampires like Dracula.

I think this looks like a pretty faithful adaptation of the book, which of course was about a guy driving around and interviewing farmers, soldiers, and scientists about their past.
I seen shuffling zombies, and I've seen fast as hell zombies, but I ain't never seen gushing waves of zombies!

Remember that movie, The Day After Tomorrow, when the mega tsunami hits the statue of liberty and eventually reaches the city? Well that's what should happen in this movie. instead of water, it's zombies. you'll see floating cars and stuff. man, way to shit on the book, hollywood. not watching this one.

I'm not a zombiephile so I'm not sure my opinion counts. But that didn't look like a zombie attack so much as it looked like an onrushing flash flood. It looked very CGI and would totally take me out of the movie.
