I dont remember anyone bitching this much about Yin Sen not being asian in these films....
More links from around the web!
have to admit given how Disney did n't dare make the Mandarin true asien for fear of offending china given his original look now a days looks like a stero type. and also not wanting to cost them the over seas market. that ben actully nails how the mandarin should look and wonder what those rings are made of.
There is Chitauri crap scattered all over New York now, and I doubt even SHIELD can clean up all of it, so maybe the Mandarin or some of his people will gather some of it and he can figure out a way to use it. Even if it's not in ring form, maybe the Mandarin decides to make it fit his whole Ten Rings thing.
You know, if you told me that was a promo image for the Hot Toys Mandarin figure, I would totally believe you.
I don't quite get why they didn't make him Asian, I have to say. I'm sure there's a reason of some kind, but they could stick this kind of an outfit on a Chinese person and not have it look bad.
And racist schmacist re: how it would look - Mandarin's a more regal character anyway, so it makes sense he'd dress more traditionally w/ robes and such instead of with a suit or something.
@GeneralTekno ASFGHKJ ASIAN DOES NOT MEAN CHINESE!! What if I tell you that "Americans" means somebody with a cowboy accent and a gun toting madman? Yeah. EXACTLY!
@GeneralTekno Interesting that you equate 'Asian' with 'Chinese' as if ALL the other Asian peoples don't exist.
@GeneralTekno To me he looks middle easternish, which makes sense given that the terrorist group that kidnapped Tony in the first movie was called "The Ten Rings."
@GeneralTekno If the Mandarin does in fact have the Captain America tattoo on his neck, I think they are going with a Colonel Kurtz (Apocalypse Now) type character.
I'm just curious, I love Ben Kingsley, but isn't the Mandarin... uh... asian?
As long as he does this, I probably shouldn't care:
@Lithroe Well, "The Mandarin" could have been his codename. With that in place, The Mandarin could've been any nationality.
@NeoRickicker @Lithroe Aparently the word "Mandarin" means bureaucrat, or "the one who commands".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin_%28bureaucrat%29
@jonap @NeoRickicker @Lithroe It's also another word for "orange". For all we know, Movie!Mandarin is descended from ancient oranges.
@Lithroe That was my first thought when he was cast. I want him to have a little of Don Logan in there under the surface.
@Lithroe I think you mean Chinese. (Kingsley is half-Indian, which makes him Asian.)
I still say he looks like he walked off the set of the Hobbit. Still looks awesome though.
@Someguy If I had to venture a guess. Given the stinger at the end of Avengers I'm going to assume that if the Mandarin's rings are anything but symbolic then we're going to see the introduction of one at least one Infinity Gem.
@Diddy_Mao @Someguy Some say that was the blue Mind gem in Loki's staff in The Avengers.
I have to wonder how they'll explain them if they do have the powers. Will they be technology he developed? Starktech? Alien tech? Asgardian?
So far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is passing off magic as really advanced technology, but they haven't been too keen to throw a lot of alien tech around on Earth yet (aside from the attack on Earth in The Avengers). The Ten Rings were around in the first Iron Man movie, so I'm wondering how they'll make the rings fit with the world they've built.
Also, if they can do Mandarin in Iron Man 3, then dammit! I want the Wrecking Crew in a Thor movie!!!
@nix.nightbird @Someguy I'm guessing it could be something that came from the Five Realms. If they explained it like that, it would emphasize on Nick Fury's point about the Tesseract being made a weapon in protection against people like Thor. I mean, think about it: the World Security Council probably had suspicions that the Mandarin might own super-advanced alien technology (read: magic rings), but being skeptics, they weren't too sure if magic rings is even a thing. But after New York Invasion Attempt, they're more likely to believe that, yes, those are magic rings around his fingers, and willing to take action to stop the guy.
@Someguy I know they're kind of cutting out the alien origin thing (dashing my hopes of Fin Fang Foom but Tony kind of blew something like that up in Avengers anyway). I vaguely remember someone saying they won't shoot ice beams or anything like that, but they're not just for show either.
@Someguy I am really digging the look but with out the rings this will totally suck for me.
