Actually, it's just an air current - but it seems so much cooler to think of it as an invisible deflector. The air umbrella repels water by blowing it away from you in an "air curtain," and as its ad copy states, "not only it makes people more convenient, but also helps more eco-friendly as reducing the use of a plastic bag." So all you people who were putting plastic bags over your heads can stop now. Unless you were committing suicide with them, in which case this message probably reaches you far too late.
The writer at Yanko Design who discovered this item is excited:
Physics and a lot of engineering stuff is clogging my brains to accept this design, but if I put these dark clouds of doubt out of the way, we may have something in this concept. Think about it!
I am too - it certainly beats the gutter-bumber-chute.

Thought it was a weird Japanese product of the week. Though I'm pretty sure someone *coughdrabraxas* could think of some unorthodox uses for it.
Hooray - I love this thing
1) We all know stupid people who would believe that this was a force shield
2) If you angle it just right you can soak the people around you while keeping an oblivious and innocent look on your face
3) It makes people more convenient - and lets face it people are an incovenient nuissance
So basically if you walk down a crowded sidewalk in the rain, you get to stay dry AND throw the rain onto the people near you. Win win.
This will be great. Instead of umbrellas that don't need power, we can use our energy supply. Wait? How is that eco friendly?
Everyone complaining their Air umbrellas out of power. I forgot to charge my Air Umbrella? Losing power in long rains. Everyone wanting me to try to fix their damn Air Umbrella.
@Someguy I enjoy electricity-related "green" solutions to everyday problems. So instead of reusing a normal, cheap thing, we spend more money AND burn through electricity.
@rabidronnie @Someguy But think of the physical waste. When you threw away a classic umbrella, you threw away a hunk of plastic and metal. When you throw away an air umbrella you throw away... uhm... a hunk of plastic and metal with batteries... Oh just never mind...
"not only it makes people more convenient, but also helps more eco-friendly as reducing the use of a plastic bag."
Rob is back!
Just kidding.
I think i found the top buyer of these...

@10glfan59 Wait! Does that mean their was another team involved? Where were the Team CaptainZADL shirts?
I think the plastic bag is for carrying your wet umbrella in.
And wouldn't this cause the water to hit other people?
@lady.teresa Well, don't you see? That's the genius of it! Once the other people get annoyed by the splashback, they'll have to go out & buy their own air umbrella! This guy's an evil genius that's gonna make a fortune! Hell, screw the penguin simply buying these, he's the manufacturer! http://i.imgur.com/yamIL.jpg
@lady.teresa In the 70's a lot of women had plastic covers they would tie onto their heads to keep their hair dry. Maybe someone still uses those.
