Is this real? I managed to miss this news for five days?
I have a life! I have a life outside of the Internet! Yes!!
Yes, Star Wars and Star Trek are now controlled by the same guy.
Think they hired him just because he'll be good at keeping a secret?

After the rape of Star Trek, how can this guy be trusted with another beloved franchise!
@crgrier You mean, after the original universe was shit on by the last season of Enterprise and Star Trek Nemesis? Everything Star Trek was on hold permanently.
@crgrier makes sense actually mean outside of cheapshots about lens flare wasnt the main nerd critisism about Abrams star trek that it was to much like star wars? So in between cocaine highs some executive had one of those "I'll show them" moments.
@TheConjurerOfCheapTricks Not to upstage you but i found this pretty awesome movie poster.

Listen up, nerds, if you ever hear the phrase "an individual with knowledge of the production" in a piece of "news" about an upcoming movie, what you're about to hear is a bald-faced lie, a made-up rumor, and downright fiction.
@shortmikeshort There are a lot of sources saying this to be true. So unless this is the biggest hoax in entertainment history or we have to come to the realization this is true.
nice for if nothing else he can use his cred as also being a fan of the franchise to make sure lucas does not even in his limited capicity screw up this new chapter. plus also keep some of the execs who don't get the saga from trying to make the thing make the prequels look like oscar contenders. but also nice to see them finaly hire some one who knows how to handle a classic property.
I don't hate that he will be doing it, but I feel doing both Star Trek and Star Wars will bite one of the franchises in the ass in some manner.
Okay, I have had some time to digest what has happened. Honestly, i loved the new Star Trek, despite JJ blowing canon out of the escape hatch. So i hope that based on his input on Prometheus, Damon Lindelof better stay as far away from this thing as possible, i don't care how friendly those two are. Secondly, JJ and Steven Spielberg are good friends and can put out sci fi (i loved Super 8 despite what some of you say) but i for one would love to see Spielberg brought into the Star Wars universe.
@Canadian.Scott I also loved Super8 (found it to be almost perfectly cut from the intended cloth of 80's Spielberg). Not sure if I agree he kicked all canon from Star Trek (or at least he kept the majority of components that make Trek Trek: Brains on equal par with brawn, time travel, multi-generational respect, humor, etc.). I think Abrams will do fine not because he developed an almost perfect homage to an earlier style, but because I felt he paid attention to the details about what made it *feel* right (i.e. a period film). He accomplished this in Star Trek, and Super 8. As for Star Wars, I believe he'll keep that period film sense--the only difference would be that the period of the SW universe is the one being represented.
Great news, I honest didn't care who got the job I just want new Star Wars. Keep time travel out of it and let's really get into this universe.
@zombies8myballs I'm baffled by the concept of "just get me some new star wars." That's how I felt when I was 17 and standing in line for Phantom Menace tickets. See how well that turned out?
I'm looking forward to the renewal of the Star Wars/Star Trek rivalry, only with both camps arguing over which franchise Abrams ruined more. In the words of Bane, LET THE GAMES BEGIN.
However, if Abrams can get John Noble in there somewhere...
@EliasAlgorithm Here to help illustrate the point...

How does this talentless shitbird and his sycophant cronies continue to get work WITHOUT ANY REAL SUCCESS? A monkey could have made "moderately successful" Star Trek reboot box office. Super 8 sucked and failed. Cowboys vs Aliens sucked and failed. How about that "Lost" finale? Hate Michael Bay (as I do) but Transformers 2 didn't succeed because of the script, it was goddamn awful. Prometheus?
What the fuck blackmail does this guy hold over the Execs? When will Hollywood ever promote GOOD MOVIEMAKERS and not schmoozing, politically connected manipulators?
@Odkin Do you even know what you're talking about? There has never been a Star Trek film that's grossed over 250 million dollars domestic, and Super 8 made 127 million off a 45 million budget. That's sounds like a hot streak to me. Face it, the dude's a pretty successful producer and director thus far. Abrams didn't have shit to do with Cowboys and Aliens, and was the exec. producer on Lost, not the showrunner. I think that qualifies him enough to put him on the short list of directors up for this movie. If you recall, a ton of filmmakers turned it down because they were either busy, or too intimidated to take on the project.
@Odkin I agree that Super 8 was disappointing...but $127 million is hardly a failure. I've also heard the Lost finale was a disappointment...but the series remains a phenomenon. Fringe and Alias were both hits. He produced Ghost Protocol, a solid and successful MI installment. And I don't know what metric you use where $260 million for Trek is only "moderately successful." Is it all gold? Of course not. But he's got a helluva batting average. As for C&A, T2, and Prometheus, Abrams wasn't involved with any of them. It sounds like your ire is better directed at Kurtzman, Orci, and Lindelof.
@Odkin Choosing a random movie here... Didn't Super 8 make something along the lines of 200 million dollars more than the movie cost to make? And while that doesn't include marketing, it also excludes video/DVD/Bluray/download/mental implant sales....
I hope my business sucks and fails too, if that's failure. Also... your last couple of sentences about Bay and prometheus are nonsequiteralicious.
"nonsequiteralicious"
Didn’t Marry Poppins have a song about that word?
Nonsequiteralicious-expialadocious.... oh never mind...
@Canadian.Scott @Haldan @NealKristopher @OdkinActually, the sound of it something quite atrocious.
@Haldan @NealKristopher @Odkin Well done! Don't give up, it's a strong joke.
"Your father was commander of a Death Star for 12 weeks, he took 5 billion lives, including Bail Organa's....I dare you to do better."
"Luke Skywalker was a great Jedi once, but that was another life..."
OK, I knew there was a conflict of interest after seeing the 2009 film, but shit, man! This is ridiculous!
I think this is pretty timely considering this announcement. And it literally made me laugh for five minutes straight. Enjoy!
Oh my gawd, I almost shit my pants!!!! :D Best SW related video of the week!!!!
I need like 24 hours to digest this news...so for now, you get this...

Look at it this way, with Star Trek 2009 more like a Star Wars movie, we have the potential for that great nerd showdown. The Enterprise vs a Star Destroyer. In 3d Lens-O-Vision!
@Nicnac See post below with that picture...gave me a funny feeling down there...
So, does this make him bitrektual?
