So for those of you wondering whether he’d ever permanently grow into a man with a white beard, it looks like the answer is a resounding no. He probably wanted to avoid Gandalf and Dumbledore comparisons, being able to see the future and all.
Comparisons to other things, however, are not as much of a problem. Take a look at this clip from the season premiere, which attempts to achieve – on a significantly lower budget – that whole 300-style “speed-up, slow-down” effect to make a swordfight more exciting. Yes, it’s clear they’re doing it in part to cover for the fact that these guys aren’t actually swift swordsmen, and no, it doesn’t really matter.

Merlin‘s fifth season has already been shown in the UK, but it premieres in the U.S. this Friday at 10 p.m. on SyFy.
