in the ultimate universe Rhino is a guy in a giant suit of armor. May be that Giamatti will be a genius who created it and uses it to wreak havoc
Who would you expect to play the Rhino in a Spider-Man movie? He's a big, dumb indestructible dude, so I might have guessed that the wrestler actually named Rhino could be a decent fit.

The Wrestling Wrap-Up
But that guess would be way wrong. Because according to the Hollywood Reporter, when Marc Webb thinks big, dumb and indestructible, he thinks of this guy...

That's right. Paul Giamatti.
Given that the storyline of these movies so far has centered on mixing human and animal DNA, it would seem likely that the Rhino might be an actual mutant in this one, with Giamatti doing mo-cap on a CG body. Certainly we can hope it's not a Topher Grace-as-Venom physical mismatch.
There have been some oddball comic castings in the past, but this is way up there. Paul doesn't disappoint as an actor, but damn, it feels weird. Apparently he's been wanting this particular role for a while, though.

I have complete faith that Paul Giamatti will be able to pull off the Rhino, especially since he’s been a fan of the role for a long time. I think they can find some way to morph him into the bulking beast, and I can’t wait to find out how he will fit into the story. With my anticipation for this movie growing, I have been coping with the long wait, by watching everything Spider-Man using Blockbuster @Home from DISH. My late work schedule at DISH leaves me very little time in the day to go out and rent a movie. So I really love that I can just put movies on my cue and then get them delivered quickly in the mail. But for days when I have time and forget to send back my movie, I also love having the option of unlimited in store exchanges. Watching the movies again has made the wait for this new film go quicker. I don’t think they would have cast Paul if he couldn’t do this role, so I am excited to see his Rhino come to life.
So long as they don't throw in Doc Ock near the end and have him switch bodies with Spidey to...you know what? I don't think I can, or should, finish that sentence. I have nothing against Paul Giamatti, but the only way this makes any sense to me is if it turns out he's playing a scientist type character who builds a Rhino robot or something.
@kirkbwriter I'm pretty convinced that this happened off-screen near the start of Godawful Spider-Thing 1.
It's about the only way to explain the douchebag behaviour 'Peter' displayed in that film.
@kev.tomes @kirkbwriter Godawful Spider-Thing is officially what I'm calling that book now. Now give Constantine a better title cuz I can't read that book either.
Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as Rhino.....OKAYYY. This could be amazing or a terrible mess. But at least they are going for some fine actors.
And WOOHOO, theres more than one villain because Electro would not have been enough to support the movie. Plus I remember reading somewhere, Marc Webb wanted to use Oscorp as the villainous organisation of the movies and they would produce all of the supervillains and it looks like they are following through on this idea with Electro and Rhino.
and if they dont kill off either one, we can be well on the way to a Sinister Six movie, which honestly they should have been working towards if Spider-Man 3 hadnt have messed up everything. I hope we get six of these Spider-Man movies, end the trilogy with Goblin killing Gwen, Spider-Man stopping Oscorp from creating any more villains and Peter graduates from high school. Then end another trilogy with Spider-Man being forced to fight six of his worst foes having set them up for the previous 5 movies.
Paul Giamatti is interesting to watch in his roles, but hopefully Marc Webb learns how to direct action films better. I watched the first Amazing Spiderman and it was pretty lousy. I give it a rating of 6.1 out of 10. It had so many bad things going for it. The only thing I did enjoy was how Spidey fought in his fight scenes, and also how Peter Parker sustains and shows his injuries he suffers in his daily life, the injuries he obtains during his life as Spiderman. Hopefully this second one is way better.
1. Gore! Gore! Gore!
2. Giamatti can pull off the character of Rhino from an acting standpoint. But he can't pull off the physical character. Pass
I'm ridiculously excited about Paul Giamatti as Rhino. He's so miscast it'll be incredible. And he actually loves the character. Now I feel bad that jamie Foxx will get upstaged again. Seriously, Giamati even makes Edward Cullen compelling: http://www.avclub.com/articles/watch-paul-giamatti-break-new-ground-in-the-romant,91557/
@EvilMonkeyPope actually in cosmopolis he did make pattinson pretty compelling at the end
Giamatti is overqualified as an actor for this type of movies but also he really deserves a summer blockbuster in his belt, would have been an error to cast the part just by physic as someone as wrestler Rhino can't possible be a decent actor.
I actually I'm not bothered by Grace being Venom, he played an obnoxious human being who almost deserved all he got, and well that actor provoke us to feel no sympathy for him (Laura Prepon was to much a woman for that skinny ass as well as Bryce Dallas Howard)

Does anyone know if rhino or juggernaut came first? It seems like they are basically the same character (although juggernaut's smarter) but one has a horn on his head.
Juggy actually appeared first in X-Men #12, 1965, and Rhino appeared the next year in Amazing Spider-Man #41. Also, Juggernaut is more powerful and can't be stopped once he moves foward(usually), and Rhino is stuck in his costume (usually).
lalalalalala I can't hear you lalalalala this movie doesn't exist lalalalala Spider-Man is not being bastardized by Sony and M. Webb lalalalalalalala
But who is going to play Mysterio?

Anyone else a little disappointed they're playing it so fast and loose with villain reveals? I don't expect Trek Into Darkness level of secrecy, but at least make us work for it a bit! Then again this IS The Amazingly Unnecessary Spiderman reboot no one asked for. Maybe they DO know their audience, the casual viewers that likely don't care either way.
Ultimate Rhino was a short guy in a robotic rhino suit, maybe that's where they are going?
Not that I'm saying that Paul Giamatti would be the perfect for this, but doesn't it seem he would make a better Scorpion then Rhino?
@Someguy Dude. Duuuuude. Mind blown. I never considered until you said it but he'd be a perfect Mac Gargan!
Rhino cannot carry a movie as a sole villain, he can only serve as icing. that said, I see no reason why he should be omitted as a B-villain. I think if there's anyone in Spidey's villain menagerie to be a miniboss, Rhino is a good fit and won't overshadow anybody. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is building up to a Sinister Six after a few movies get under this franchise.
I really, really don't care for Giamatti. I have no idea why, I don't think he deserves it.
And what is this "wrestling" thing I keep seeing on here? :)
@Shemp Giamatti is usually great. have you seen American Splendor? that's the problem with this though, mocapped or not, I just can't see him as the rhino, he's more of a dramatic actor than action. dude sounds like Yakko Warner when he's angry.
Should I remind people that the big-bad from MIB 3 was Jemaine Clement? He's not exactly a wrestler body type, and I thought he pulled off the scary pretty well. Though I do have to admit, Giamatti will have to do a much better job than I have ever seen him do before to pull this off.
@tobenalexander @nix.nightbird eh, some people are picky about their literary definitions, and that's okay. Especially when it comes to the villain of the story, I've always maintained that you can't get a good hero without a good villain.
@Thane_Greyhaven @nix.nightbird don't apologize about it man, it's a hollywood superhero movie, big bad is totally ok.
@Thane_Greyhaven It's not quite the same. Clement wasn't playing a character anybody had any preconceptions about.
@LYT A good point, with an established character, we do have certain expectations.
I just hope that these movies don't make the mistake of over-villain-ing us to death. Part of the problem with Spider-man 3, in my opinion, was that it tried to develop and utilize three villains when it barely had enough time to deal with one. We already know Electro is the main villain for this story, plus there's the background corrupt shenanigans of Norman Osborn to be explored (especially since they've already cast Chronicle kid as Harry), and now they're adding Rhino to the same movie? Typecast or not, I'm starting to worry that the storyline is going to get pretty muddled.
The problem with Spider-Man 3 was that Sony has the film rights to Spider-Man. That's the problem with ALL the Spider-Man movies. It's a damned shame that Marvel Studios can't take a crack at their A-list, most popular superhero. Instead, we keep getting crappy Sony bastardizations.
@rabidronnie It's a superhero movie sequel rule. Sequels must have more villains than the previous movie.
Now generally, it's because the first movie blew its wad and used the most high profile villain available and they think they need two or more villains to have the same threat/impact. But, uh, that's not the case here, so it's probably a studio exec or producer saying they need to make it bigger than the last one.
