Question: Does this site do the Friday contest anymore? I've looked a few times, but haven't seen it. But I admit I could have just not have noticed it.

I'm not a big fan of using blog posts to make these kinds of site-maintenance statements, but for some things, just answering in comments won't do, as there's one question which keeps coming up in my email inbox and on unrelated threads.
"When are you going to do Fan Fiction Friday?"
The answer isn't one you'll be happy with: I'm not. And my refusal isn't because I don't want to satisfy the readership.
Not long after I got this job, I spoke with Rob. I brought up the fact that many of you missed the feature. It was a good conversation, and the long and the short of it is that we both agreed it was his creation to keep. Even though his current employer doesn't choose to run with it at this time, things change. One day he will probably have the opportunity again, and I respect his right to return to it whenever that happens.
I've been in his situation before, and I get it.
In other site news, Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a paid holiday for me, so holiday blogging will be in effect. Have a great weekend.
More links from around the web!
As much as I'll miss FFF (and 'miss' is a bit strong - I'll not laugh in horror), I'm actually kinda glad it's going this way. Not that I think you'll do a bad job of it, but because it's nice to see someone's Intellectual Property not be absorbed by the company they work for. I've been employed by many a place that insisted on me signing a thousand papers recognizing that anything I created for them was 'THEIRS, dammit. And don't you forget it!' So it's nice to see someone's creative property get credited to them as they deserve.
Inasmuch as riffing on terrible stories about Pokemon sex can be considered creative property. ;) JK
Now, someone go and tell Rob Bricken that HE DESERVES FFF. *fist shaking, Toht melting*
@Dudley_Dawson We should just find a post with hardly any comments and then just talk on it all day. So then when people look around they'll see some low end article with 200+ comments and people will have their minds blown.
@Dudley_DawsonHere is my suggestion...

Well I will keep you company dude. I'm stuck here at work all day while almost everyone else gets to stay in.
Aw thanks dude I really appreciate the company. I too must slave away in the salt mines for my pittance.
Okay then, I'm gonna get back to work then. Just relax and everything will be ok.
Don't you get off topic with me! It isn't your business how my day is going because god only knows I will make a Shakespearean production out of it!
Holy crap man calm down I didn't mean anything by it, just dial it back a bit. So how is work going?
Oh so what I'm being a drama queen because I make a small complaint and suddenly I'm going overboard expressing myself!?
Nothing, nothing I just thought it can't be all that bad. I'm here too and I'm not that depressed about it.

@arivalscientist @Gallen_Dugall I prefer crimson herring - people think it's red until it's too late
Also, Happy Martin Luther King Jr day and Happy Inauguration Day...in honour of this enjoy.

Off Topic Historical Accuracy Rant
I don't know how many times I see Hoplites mis-scaled. We know how big a hoplon was - a big one meter shield - so everyone gets that right, but then they stick it on an out of scale modern sized person. An average Greek was no where near 1.9 meters tall and you can do the math to see that such a person would be nearly half exposed behind a shield 1 meter in diameter. A typical Greek behind his shield would have been about 1.6 meters tall and receiving 16% more coverage from his hoplon than a modern person.
Basically, either scale the damn shields up or use shorter people. If you want to see how absurd the use of super tall people behind a hoplon is take a look at the new screen shots from Rome Total War - the hoplons look like toys rather than a formidable barrier. The only bits that should be showing are the head from eyes up and the leg from just above the ankle down.

I always thought the most frequently asked question about Fan Fiction Friday was - "Why? For the love of all that Cthulhu holds dear, WHY?"
don't blame you for not wanting to try and do something like that luke. for one that was robs baby. and two why would you want to go through reading some of the stories that became fiction legends of horror . if you do not have to not to mention do not think any one could really top rob shoes having to read stories like the infamous pokemon story or any master piece from comnix
Question to the Proime Minister Mr Patty Donaho!
Yes, what is the right honorable prime minister doing to avenge the death of Fan Fiction Friday on the whiney pussies at I09.com? Are there any 4chan style raids planned, and if so, when can we participate in them?
@chefjmh I have asked many times if we should raid the site that shall not be named. So you have my support.
@Canadian.Scott @chefjmh @Gallen_Dugall
OK lets make it happen. I've done a few raids before. The only question is what to do... I say we proxy up and show these pussies what the dark side of the internet REALLY looks like. Just spam the comments with excerpts from erotic fanfiction passed, something like that... We could even make the posts look normal by adding regular discussion text and then seguing into lucious malfoy skullfucking draco. I will make a tee shirt and send it to the first person who can make one of the whiney soccermoms of io9 vomit.
We need to start a separate group for this though, can't very well organize it here.
@Canadian.Scott why thank you kind sir! I suggest a facebook group. Password protected and all that jazz
@chefjmh you know, you bring up a good point. What can we do? And we can do something. If we empowered Rob by supporting his work and depower the rest of the site by refusing to click on any links or view any other pages we could see Rob gain enough clout on the site to throw his weight around in the non-literal sense for a change. Rob's articles already are some of the biggest draws to the site so this is possible.
Finally schools are putting an end to the horror that is Hello Kitty and her terroristic ways
@Gallen_Dugall I would love to ask the administrators of Mt Carmel Elementary to describe for me a plausible scenario where a 5 year old could threaten an entire school with a soap bubble gun. And describe it in a way that doesn't make me laugh in their faces.
@skrag2112 @Gallen_Dugall I imagine the conversation went something like this -
5YO: Oh, it would seem you have me at a disadvantage, however appearances can be deceptive. What I have here would appear to be a perfectly normal Hello Kitty bubble gun, or so it would seem. For I have replaced the ordinary bubble mixture with a special concoction of my own. Three parts toilet water and one part neural toxin to create bubbles of pure stinky toilet death! MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
They've already optioned this for a movie - "It Has No Mouth And I Must Scream"
And now.......instead of it being on display for all to see in the Smithsonian Institution......The Batmobile is now going to rot away in some rich prick's garage........
@arivalscientist Yeah, you would think it would be in a museum instead of the guys living room where the winner of the auction said he was going to put it.
@arivalscientist we'll always have the Batboat and the Batcopter... and the Batcycle, Batplane, Bat-truck, Bat-subwayrocket, Batbike, Batwing, and the Batamaran
I always thought it was kind of dumb. It became obvious to me that people were writing stuff that was intentionally horrible in order to feature it on FFF. It was like a bad TLC reality show- Nothing about it was real.
So yeah, Rob's welcome to that "creation", if by "creation" you mean "Mining other people's stories and posting them on your own web site while you MST3K on the sidelines."
By all means, bring on more pictures of [insert nerd intellectual property here] combined with [insert everyday object here]. That stuff's hilarious.
And so is sarcasm.
Can't argue with not continuing it, personally never paid to much attention to FFF anyway, but I did admire Rob's ability to sift thru and comment up some really horrible writing. Will admit and gf agrees with me on on really missing super terrific Japanese thing though. That was always the right balance of madcap/psychotic.
