If you're sick of zombies, blame Max Brooks and his stupid books. He took the cool idea put forth by guys like Richard Matheson, George A. Romero and Dan O'Bannon (ghouls as a hostile environmental backdrop for social commentary and man-versus-himself drama) and, after dumbing it down to survival porn, pimped it out to the people who never "got" zombie movies before.
Result: A ton of people hopping on the zombie bandwagon, not knowing what made it so fun to begin with, and assuming that it was all about zombie kills and gore (it never was). Further results: A shit-ton of BAD zombie movies that cater to the mouth-breathers and survivalists rather than the Matheson/Romero/O'Bannon/Fulci fans who were into ghouls before Max Brooks did to them what Anne Rice did to vampires.
It's fitting that Brooks' book becomes such an awful, artificial-looking, insulting movie. It shows Brooks' priorities (selling out to the larger audience) and it shows the weakness in his books (essentially no plot, just a series of survivalist-porn war stories that treat the zombies as just another invading force; They might as well have been Martians, Chinese soldiers, robots, or rabid shih-tzus.)
So here it is, guys: You get what you deserve for supporting Max Brooks. This is EXACTLY what he was going for: The Big Bucks. The stupid masses. He's counting his money thinking of new ways to dumb down zombies (or maybe some other monster) and you're left with a CGI shitfest that is different from, yet every bit as dumb as his books.
