I was incredibly disappointed with Assassins Creed 3 for various reasons including but not limited to:

A variety of in game bugs

A thoroughly unlikable protagonist (Hell of a step back from the lovable rogue of Ezio)

One of the worst endings in video game history.

Now I am actually very much in to the history of pirates in more the academic than disney way so knowing how the AC team normally put a hell of a lot of research in to these games, do I dare get my hopes up again?

Modern times: It's back, set in 2013. No Desmond Miles, descendant of the main games' protagonists. He's done for. Trottier: "The present day in ACIV is basically the logical continuation of the ACIII present day. But this time, instead of making you play through a character of the past through a character in the present, we wanted to make it even more immersive for the player, make it more fun. So, you are now a full-time employee of Abstergo Entertainment, and you've been hired there as a researcher. You are the one in the Animus doing the research on an important character from the past, Edward Kenway."

And this is why I won't be getting this game. Why would I buy the next game in a series that's killed my favorite character and is just going to let me down storywise?

Man, I was so wishing for them to get to Japan, that time is just perfect for this series.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.  I've not seen any real gameplay.  Once I see that I can make a better decision.  

If the lead character can't hold his breath for ten minutes, I'm calling bullshit on his pirate credentials.

That said, kudos for cutting bait on the AC3 failure and going straight to a new number.  AC2 was brilliant, but after four spinoffs Italy got a bit long in the tooth.

I was kinda beaten to it already, but this is such a poor choice when there's plenty of more interesting historical venues to choose from, especially in terms of architecture.

Don't get me wrong, Sid Meier's Pirates! is one of my favourite games ever, but Assassin's Creed is fun when you're exploring giant cities with interesting architecture. Port Royal (or whatever they're going to use) simply isn't that type of city, nor is anything else in the area.  Now, if there's a series of missions where you get to go back to Seville, then I'm interested.  But I suspect if they do something like that, it'll be like AC2's "Rome" mission where you barely got to see the place before beating up on the pope.

You know, the odd thing is that I don't really associate pirates with professional assassins that much...every other crime, yes, but oddly enough, I just never straight-up associate these two.

Still, the potential is there, so I'll remain optimistic for now. I'd love to see if they could come up with more unique time periods/settings, though.

And they're not setting the game in Edo Japan or Victorian London... why exactly?
