Star Wars Babies Inches Ever Closer to Becoming a Reality

In a bit of unsurprising and yet still a complete bummer news, it has been announced that the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movies will be origin stories. Yawn. This bombshell was tucked away in an otherwise innocuous Variety article about an investor conference which was held this week in which Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo laid out the company’s plans for their new releases:

Rasulo also noted that one “Star Wars” trilogy film or “origin story film” would also appear on the release schedule each year, starting with the seventh installment in the “Star Wars” saga that J.J. Abrams will direct and Disney releases in 2015.

We know that these spin-off films would alternate with the new trilogy, but this is the first clarification we are getting that they will be origin stories. Again, let me emphasize, yawn. I would much rather have a say Boba Fett adventure story written and directed by Joe Johnston or a stand-alone Han/Chewie tale (even with the inevitable recasting) than yet another look at how these characters originally met up. Maybe I’m just still pissed about Yoda telling Chewie he will miss him in Revenge of the Sith, but more prequels just bum me out. As I’m guessing they do you.The silver lining in all of this is, as /Film points out, that the competent Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are the ones actually writing these spin-off movies. So they could potentially overcome the problems inherent in writing origin stories for established characters. Then again, they still can be steaming piles of poo. My solution: have Disney chuck these new live-action prequels and hire Jeffrey Brown to his adapt his excellent Darth Vader and Son (pictured above) for an animated film instead.
