Chappie‘s First Trailer Looks Two Parts Short Circuit, One Part Edward Scissorhands

It beats ham-handed political fables, but Neill Blomkamp’s new tale of an intelligent robot almost immediately strikes me as stylized autobiography. Just as Tim Burton made Edward Scissorhands to represent his own past as a scared little boy afraid to touch things, Chappie the robot looks like the portrait of the scared nerd as outsider, especially when you explicitly show him watching He-Man cartoons. Doubly ironic bummer, then, that Wolverine apparently wants to shut him down.
I guess we have to wait for the movie to hear him rap.
