The Russo Brothers to Direct Both Infinity War Films

I suppose we had no reason to make any assumptions, but I was of the mind that Joss Whedon, film director and major geek deity, would be the one (and only) person behind all of the future Avengers films. After the ultra-ultra success of the 2012’s The Avengers, and the posed success of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon seemed to be the only one who could handle such a magnitudinous project. Indeed, he has expressed nothing but enthusiasm for the superhero movies coming out of Disney.

But, as Badass Digest recently revealed (through unknown sources), The Russo Brothers will direct Avengers: Infinity War, parts I and II.

Anthony and Joe Russo were, of course, the two behind the lauded Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a movie that Kenneth Turan said was “saddled by the defects of its virtues.” Although most people I have talked to adored The Winter Soldier. I’m personally leaning closer to Turan.

The Russos are also helming Captain America: Civil War, which means they have essentially become the key players in all of Marvel’s Avengers movies. This may or may not be a good thing, as the central criticism of the Marvel films is that they lack variety, and can feel generic. Perhaps the Russos are talented enough to bring unique textures to all the movies. Or perhaps executive producer Kevin Feige wants a more singular and clearer vision than even Whedon could produce.

Captain America: Civil War will be released in theaters May 6th, 2016. Avengers: Infinity War, Part I is scheduled for release on May 4th, 2018. Avengers: Infinity War, Part II is scheduled for May 3rd 2019.
