Are You Ready for the Jules Verne Musical?

VerneMusical.jpg

Usually the sci-fi and genre nerds of the world and the musical theater nerds of the world don’t overlap too heartily. But once in a blue moon, there will be an oddball attempt to mash up teh two formats. It’s then that we’ll get something like Carrie: The Musical, the opera version of The Fly, or, perhaps most notoriously, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Well, according to Deadline, the trend will continue with Jules Verne: From the Earth to the Moon, a musical biography of the famed author of Around the World in 80 Days, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, and, well, From the Earth to the Moon. It’s being presented as a “musico dramatico” project, and tells the story of the meeting between ambitious journalist Nellie Bly and Verne himself whilst she was right in the middle of trying to re-enact the ’round-the-world trip of Phileas Fogg.

Jayne Atkinson from House of Cards will play Verne’s wife.

The music will be a blend of period performances, violin concertos, and evidently a barbershop quartet.

The musical will be playing at The Ensemble of the Romantic Century, and will be presented by BAM. You can buy tickets here. It will run April 8th through April 12th.

Are you a sci-fi nerd AND a musical theater nerd? I know you’re out there.
