Here’s the Trailer for the All-Star Superman Cartoon, He Said Begrudgingly

Let me put on my extra nerd hat for a minute — the one I and all nerds put one when something we treasure comes up in conversation (yes, it’s a wizard hat). I absolutely adore Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman comics, and I’m a dude who doesn’t give two shits about Superman. When I heard it was going to be made into DC’s next animated DVD movie, I sighed. Now that the first trailer is out, I’m still sighing.

In all honesty, it looks pretty good. The voices are good (no lesser Baldwins), they seem to have done a great job replicating Quitely’s distinct style in the animation, and the story — well, the story is awesome by default. So what’s my problem? It’s that no matter how good it ends up being, I’m at that point of extreme nerd love that I feel it’s not going to even be close to as good as the original comics were. Now, while that’s probably true — just like there’s never going to be a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie or TV series as good as the books — that really doesn’t mean people should stop trying, or that there’s no benefit in giving other people a chance to enjoy a wonderful story. There is, and while I should know it, in this case, regaring All-Star Superman, I refuse to admit.

It’s weird how there’s a distinct line of nerd love in which reason fails, because there’s plenty of things I really like but am not nearly so protective of. For example, I really like Watchmen, but I don’t worship it like All-Star Superman, and was fine with the movie because it brought a great story to new audiences. But I’m too far gone to admit the same thing for All-Star Superman. I imagine there’s plenty of Watchmen lovers who feel vice versa about this; they hate the Watchmen movie, but are fine with an All-Star Superman animated movie.

Oh well. All I know is that eventually someone’s going to post footage of this to “All-Star” by Smash Mouth, and I will be forced to find that person and kill them. I’ll probably still post it on TR, but I will find them and kill them first. (Via Comics Alliance)
