Marvel Reveals Phase 3 Movies, Culminating in 2-Part Avengers/Guardians “Infinity War”

Three months later than they had originally intended, Marvel today finally revealed the Phase 3 movie schedule and titles they had wanted to have ready for Comic-Con. And oh yeah, according to Marvel president Kevin Feige, their plans have nothing to do with any competitor’s plans.

He knows we don’t believe that, and I don’t think he cares. Why should he? When he ran a montage of clips showcasing the Tesseract, Aether, and whatever the thing was called in Guardians, culminating in an image of Thanos wearing the Infinity Gauntlet, I think most of us in attendance were ready to empty our wallets preemptively. (Yes, it was Brolin Thanos, and yes, that image was the only thing “new” in the montage.) Avengers: Infinity War will be a two-part movie.

There was more to come…

Marvel wasn’t going to let DC hold the diversity card over them long, announcing both Black Panther and a Carol Danvers Captain Marvel movie. Black Panther will be played by Chadwick Boseman, and introduced in costume in Captain America 3 (which we were initially told would be called Serpent Society, but that was just a fakeout. It’s Civil War). Though there’s apparently a Wakandan easter egg in the current Age of Ultron teaser, and Feige hinted that an Inhumans-related easter egg – that movie was also formally announced – may show up “sooner than you think.”

Thor 3 will be Ragnarok. Oh, and Feige specified that Dr. Strange will introduce parallel dimensions. He didn’t say that could lead to alternate reality versions of current heroes, but that’s definitely an implication. Refused to confirm the Cumberbatch casting as yet.

Asked about Spider-Man and some other things, he didn’t directly address the issue except to say that if something wasn’t announced today, it’s either not true or still just a rumor.

New Hulk movie? Nothing to announce, but it was affirmed that he will be showing up “with his friends” quite a bit.

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans came out to introduce Chadwick Boseman, and jokingly tried to “recruit” Black Panther to their respective sides then and there, with a game of rock-paper-scissors. Boseman eventually stated he was independent and his own man. The Civil War storyline in the cinematic universe will be dealing with mandatory government oversight of superheroes.

We saw a new clip from Age of Ultron that isn’t the one which will air tonight. Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are in a field, with Rogers chopping wood, and saying he hasn’t heard from Thor. Stark is angry, and tells Rogers he doesn’t trust anyone who doesn’t have a dark side, to which Rogers responds that Stark just hasn’t seen it yet. They have a conversation about whether the goal is to always be a hero, or to go home at some point, with Stark saying the point is to not have to fight. Rogers picks up one of the logs with his hands and breaks it apart, saying that when people try to win wars before they start, innocents always die.

Feige won’t confirm any Netflix characters in Infinity War, but says it’s definitely possible. He still has a Runaways script that he loves, but there’s no room for it in the schedule yet. Emphasize the importance of Black Widow, but felt that for their first female superhero movie he wanted to introduce a new character.

What's this? Is it…yes, Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet from the #Marvel event!
