Trailer for Ralph Bakshi’s “Last Days of Coney Island” Is Very Personal, Very NSFW

Man oh man. Bakshi is one of those guys I really want to love more than I do. Like, I love the IDEA of him, and I love that when he speaks, he is utterly unfiltered. But here I was, having interviewed him, having followed his process, thinking, “well, maybe his animation is so crude because he never had a budget, and he was working with basic, primitive technology, often dealing with the loss of frames and other things beyond his control”

And here he is with his modern movie short, presumably made with a computer assist, and it looks like an unfinished test.

Maybe it’s just the trailer. Maybe I’ll be blown away by the final product. But I’d really like to see one of his ideas come to full fruition with no excuses whatsoever that he lacked control or resources. I was hoping this would be it.

I will say his ability to push buttons is absolutely intact, and I do admire that. The rest, well…you decide.
