Putting together a top ten list of action figures for a given year is difficult even when the pickings are slim, but 2013 was a banner year for action figures, with a number of long-awaited, fan-demanded toys finally being immortalized in plastic.

For the purposes of this article, my criteria for a figure being truly “controversial” was that I could track down at least one legitimate news article about someone being upset about a toy.
Technically this year’s event has just started, but we’ve already had more than enough exciting new reveals to fill a list
While many of the toys Todd McFarlane made before sticking to Halo and sports were very cool, a good number were absolutely batshit crazy. Note that doesn’t mean they sucked – some of the figures on the list below were sculpted by the famous Four Horsemen design studio. But they’re all very, very weird.
Many toy companies have upped their game in recent years as they begin to target older, nostalgic collectors (from my observation, most kids prefer their parents’ Ipads to physical toys these days). The result is a significant rise in the quality and coolness of the toys out there.
