The Spirit Is Willing, But the Dialogue Is Weak

Despite the above article title, I have to say I find this second trailer for Frank Miller's The Spirit to be far less awful than the first. Sure, there are a few corny lines of dialogue (none worse than when Sam Jackson calls him "El Spirit-o"), but not the onslaught that was featured in the last trailer, and other than, say, the entire look of the film, it' no longer looks quite as much a late night Skinemax parody of Sin City a la Alabama Jones and the Busty Crusade. I'm not saying it will be good or at all resemble Will Eisner's original comic, but I feel less inclined to run over Frank Miller in a truck after seeing it.

Don't worry... I still have enough gas (and a strong enough bumper) to take care of the job.

Frank Miller needs to be stopped. Not just from making films, but from producing ANYthing...

It seemed pretty edgy and visionary when he first started doing this "style", but now, twenty years later, it's just the same thing over and over and over, and it looks like Miller just has some serious emotional problems.

We need to stop enabling him.

I can't believe you guys. This movie is gonna be awesome! I might be one of the only people who will LOVE it, but I don't see how it could possibly warrant personal insults directed at Frank Miller.

STILL FUCK-FUCKING LAME!!! That tie comment really clinched it for me.

Why the Frank Miller hatin'? Because this kind of crap is all he's delivered for the past twenty years. It's the same note played over and over again. It kinda worked twenty years ago, when I was a teenager. But now..., c'mon Frank, write something else. Write something that isn't an insult to both the comics medium and the readers who've made you the celebrity you are today.

Back twenty years ago, Frank Miller and Alan Moore were side by side on the podium as Modern Comic Book Grandmasters. Look at the body of their work since Dark Knight/Watchmen. Miller has given us the same wannabe tough guy schtick over and over and over. Moore has branched out and given us an amazing string of inventive, creative, and respectful (of the medium of comics) masterpieces. Miracleman, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Top Ten, From Hell, and before that, Swamp Thing and V for Vendetta.

Look at the body of Miller's work and find ONE that isn't about growling, one note tough guys. Even 300 was just a bunch of tough guys yelling cliche'd dialogue.

C'mon Frank... write something for someone older than 14 years old. PLEASE.

Thank you, Piranha for sort of defending Miller, but 2 of Alan Moore's best works were Swamp thing, Miracleman and V for Vendetta. They were all written before Watchmen.

Frank Miller's stuff always has more of a point to make rather than actual substance, but if you can appreciate the statement that he's trying to make the work is very good. 300 had much more substance than the movie would lead people to believe. Sin City was ingenious, if somewhat of an aqquired taste. All-Star Batman is very hard to describe, but it's great if you can stand it. This movie will entertain me, but once again, it, like most of Miller's recent stuff, is NOT intended to appeal to general audiences who seem to know what a Superhero film should or should not be.

Just a correction..um, my math in the above comment was not so good.

Goddamn. How many goddamn times did goddamn Frank "Goddamn" Miller put the word goddamn in a goddamn sentence?

Goddamnit! Now he's goddamn got me goddamn doing it too!

That trailer was hilarious!...what's that you say? It was supposed to be serious? Oh...um, then it looked like a dumber version of "Cool World"...

I love this comment. It likens the comic to a kind of delicious poison or a cleansing fire...

I would call it more of a healing wound.

Thank God. This looks a helluva lot better than the previous teaser/trailer. But I'm not convinced, though. But ofcourse I will give it a chance since the Spirit was such a big piece of my childhood.

If the Spirit was part of your childhood, you probably shouldn't see this movie. I'll think it's awesome, but Frank Miller is far from faithful when interpreting superheroes.
