Now hold your horses. This isn't, strictly speaking, a real anime, but it's spectacularly badass and deserves your attention nonetheless. Paul "Otaking" Johnson has written, drawn and animated this selection of clips of the third Doctor, running around Tokyo, beating the hell out of thugs, meeting scantily-clad anime girls, and getting caught in a battle between Daleks and

OMG, that is awesome. And the 3rd Doctor actually was a man of action like that, as opposed to the other Doctors. I hope this turns out to be a full-length anime. The BBC should commission this.
But, Rob, Rob, it's CYBERMEN, not Metal Men. We will school you on Doctor Who yet!

Pay attention George Lucas. If you're going to re-visit a cherished sci-fi property from the 70's/80's, you're supposed to make it even more awesome than the original.

Sorry. I hated it. I'm the biggest Doctor Who fan you'll probably meet, but this was utter crap. Of course, I absolutely loathe anime, so I'm probably not ever going to like something like this, but it was absolutely stupid.
Yes, the third Doctor would defend himself... But he wasn't fucking Bruce Lee and didn't go all "Crouching Timelord, Hidden Dagon" on people (no, that wasn't a typo).
It's good animation (for anime, which is homogenous crap for the most part), but it's not Doctor Who, and I hope the BBC never allows something like this to exist. It cheapens the Doctor.
Seriously-- Why can't anime/manga folks just MAKE UP THEIR OWN CHARACTERS? Why must EVERYTHING be turned into an anime/manga version? Labyrinth, Robocop, Terminator, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Batman, and the list just keeps growing. It's like anime fans and producers won't be happy until they force their aesthetic on every fictional character ever made.
The style and pace of Doctor Who is what makes it Doctor Who. This turned it into just another reskinned Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, you-name-it anime.
Look, otaku-- Not everybody appreciates anime like you do. Please leave our stuff alone. We don't take your favorite stuff and turn it into something that suits our style, so please don't keep changing everything we like into anime. I don't think that's an unfair request. Use your imaginations and keep coming up with cool, unique stories and characters and I promise, I won't turn them into Bill Seinkewicz paintings or Dini-verse animated characters. I won't transform them into Sergio Leone archetypes, or Lucas-style Space Opera characters.
Respect the original, is what I'm saying. You all bitch about what they're doing to G.I. Joe and Transformers, right? This is no different. It's redesigning something that is already perfect the way it is.
I know. I'm outnumbered here. Most geeks seem to be all gaga over anime, and I got over that about 15 years ago, and have since grown to hate it because it's so goddamned over-saturated and never seems to change or improve.
Just--- make your own damn time travelling adventurer, dude.

I'm not sure who the "we" you are talking about are but: Dragon ball Z movie, Speed Racer Movie, the upcoming Astro Boy movie, the upcoming live action Cowboy Bebop... Not to mention all the times anime has been edited to hell and re-dubbed for Western audiences.
You don't like anime fine. For the sake of consistency are you also opposed to turning books or comics into movies? What about making movies out of TV shows? Or cartoons/comics into live action shows?

I'm not sure how this "cheapens" Doctor Who. I mean, you're free to boycott/ignore it if it gets made and it's unlikely to eclipse canonical material. And if it brings MORE people to discover the rest of the Who-niverse, then why not?
Also, I always find something slightly absurd in "non-canon" arguments about Doctor Who, a character that has been reinvented and ret-conned so many times already over the decades.
Anyway... digging the anime Daleks and Cybermen. And it looks like some pretty sweet Davros and Master action, as well. Fun!

I'm pretty sure MOST anime shows feature their own characters, since you've listed 7 properties, and there's thousands of anime shows. Not to mention the majority of what you list was COMMISSIONED by the copyright owner, not the other way around. It's not like some anime dude says,"Let's FORCE DC to let us make a Batman anthology in our style!" No,DC hires them to,because THAT IS WHAT SELLS. Sorry, but the fact is Marvel and DC comics DO NOT SELL as well as manga does.
And I know it's allready been said, but we adapt Japanese things way more often then they adapt ours. Akira,Cowboy Bebop,Godzilla,Speed Racer,Transformers,Voltron, etc.

On the other hand, a lot of that stuff tends to be adapted from or inspired by American/Western stuff to begin with. Heck, Akira Kurosawa flat-out stated that Yojimbo was directly inspired by Dashiel Hammet's .

Don't get me wrong- I totally respect his skill. It's good animation for that style, and it clearly took some work and dedication.
I just don't like the style. All anime looks alike, and I find that objectionable. There's nothing about this that defines itself as this animator's individual style- It's just his take on an established aesthetic.
The only major Japanese property I can think of that was re-done in an American style is Godzilla, and I'll be first in line to say GINO sucks. I've never seen an American animator (say, Mike Judge) try to make his own version of Vampire Hunter D or Ranma 1/2. There's no Don Hertzfeldt version of Ghost in the Shell (though that might be awesome). There's no American version of Robotech. Walter Lantz never did an Americanized Astro Boy.
Yes, there's a lot of original manga/anime content out there, and I applaud the artists/writers for coming up with their own concepts. What I'm complaining about is this trend for everything to be re-done as anime or manga, just to get the interest of Japanophiles and insert all the manga/anime cliches into the existing story.
That's just my opinion. I'm sure I like something you hate, as well.
Sometimes, when you mix peanut butter and chocolate, you don't get a yummy Reece's candy; You get icky brown sludge that is a disservice to both chocolate AND peanut butter.

That was really pretty cool. Okay, so it wasn't 100% faithful to the original. I'm down with that - some of the older Dr. Who stuff aged rather poorly, all things considered.
But I do think that anime-type things do tend to overuse the "random chick in skimpy clothes" trope. I do think that you can do this without the blatant fan service.

I have mixed feelings. I love Jon Pertwee's Doctor, but there seems to be a lot of mixed up stuff in this. Looks like the parallel universe Cybermen from the new series, Imperial Daleks and Davros meeting the Doctor too early in continuity, the Anthony Ainley version of the Master, and the "obligatory" fleet scene which I would consider far more a mark of the new series.
I have no problem with the Venusian Aikido, though I'd like to know why the Doctor was just standing in an alley using the sonic screwdriver a few feet from a gang of thugs.
If everyone could just have normal sized eyes, I'd be on board for something like this. It looks better than the Flash animation cartoons on the BBC site.

There have lately been a number of American-made live-action films based on established Anime, and there are more in the works. Some aren't so bad. Many however lack a true respect for the original.
The first Transformers mini-series featured over twenty Autobots and still managed to give all of them enough screen time to show off their personalities and special abilities, and the same for about five of the Decepticons. The Michael Bay movie last year had six, and didn't really pay any attention to anyone except Bumblebee (whose name was no longer associated with his vehicle type), and Optimus Prime. They also exaggerated what were originally very simple transformation sequences, shook the camera during action scenes like the camera guy was riding a bucking bronco with fire ants in his shirt and his pants, presented a weaker and more contrived story with far less depth... all in about the same running time.
And the rumor mill says it gets worse. Voltron of the lions is in the works, set on Earth instead of Aris, with a possibility that the princess won't even be blonde.
There are dozens more examples, as well as bad adaptations and bastagizations (no, that's not a typo; go watch Johnny Dangerously) in the import process (most notably Sailor Moon), and someone who's seen more of them can rattle off a much longer list.
As for the anime-ification of American comic and cartoon properties, I should point out that the DC-based superhero cartoons which Warner Bros was producing originally had a much closer art style to what we'd typically see in the comic books. However, the pseudo-anime style we've seen over the last few years is faster and easier, and thus cheaper, to draw, which is the real reason the change was made.
I should also point out that a lot of American animation labors under the mistaken impression that animated = children's. Of the small remainder, a big chunk of it is bathroom, duhmness, and jacka** gags which if not for the foul language and sexual inuendos could be considered less mature than most of the kids' stuff. The tiny remainder falls into one of two categories: stuff that pretends to be dumber or insulting than it is in order to attract a broader audience (e.g. The Simpsons, Futurama, or King of the Hill), or gets horribly undersupported or misunderstood by the marketing and scheduling guys (e.g. Invasion America).

I'm not sure if you'll even read this but here goes anyway.
You don't like anime. That's fair enough. I personally don't think anime is nearly as good as it used to be which is also what the animator of this Doctor Who anime said as well. But a lot of your arguments are fundamentally flawed.
Godzilla was the only major property redone in an American style? Umm nope. Dragon Ball Z and Speed Racer (the former especially is now arguably far more popular than Godzilla) have as well.
You mention the Dini-verse animated characters. Actually that's wrong in itself. It's actually Timm-verse animated characters as Bruce Timm not only produced the series but designed virtually all of the characters himself and it is his design style which is inspired by Space Ghost. Whilst we're on that topic they have gone on record as saying a lot of their work was highly influenced by Japanese animation. In fact one episode, the second Ninja story, pays homage to Lupin 3.
I personally don't bitch about what they are doing to Transformers since you are mistaken yet again. The fact of the matter is that Transformers is originally from Japan so they can do with it what they will.
I personally don't think that all anime look alike. There is a huge style of change between anime from the 80's-early 90's to the past decade which I'm sorry to say has happened for the most part over here too. It's all because of digital animation as opposed to cell animation. Because things can be done far easier now people cannot be bothered to animate properly. There are certain exceptions for both Japan and western animation but usually they are similar nowadays in both cases. Most animes do look similar now in the same way that most western animation uses the ridiculously cheap looking flash style of animation that is being imported everywhere (South Park, Powerpuff Girls and numerous kiddy shows).
Lastly in your second post you are still missing the FUNDAMENTAL point. The Japanese have not made the decision themselves to turn Marvel and DC comics into anime counterparts. You say that it's for the Japanophiles but it isn't. They couldn't care less. Batman is nowhere near as popular as you might think in Japan. It's DC and Marvel THEMSELVES who are wanting THEIR work to be turned into animes since it's popular. If you're going to complain then complain to DC and Marvel about it since it is them wanting it done in the first place. These new Marvel mangas were done at the insistance of Stan Lee.
