io9 is reporting that Codex Pictures, the guys that did all those Bionicle DVD movies for Lego, will be making a CG DVD movie based on Warhammer 40,000 called Ultramarines. Here is literally all the info available on the project from the official site:
Yeah... not much info. But I still thought you guys would want to know instantly. The moment fans have been waiting for is finally here... for the first time, the Warhammer 40,000 universe will be realised in a feature-length movie on DVD.
Ultramarines is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques. Games Workshop is delighted to be working with UK-based production company Codex Pictures, who have the momentous task of bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to the screen.

Well, looking over the site it looks like Dan Abnett is going to be the screenwriter for it, and the CG available on the site looks promising. I'll personally be keeping an eye on it, but for now it looks like despite what screw ups have been made by the groups in the past, the movie should be well done and given how good of a writer Dan is I feel confident that provided it at least reaches the higher end of the pg-13 rating it'll be worth watching.
-
this is the most beutifule thing i ever heard
-
I think that the people who made that Star Wars: Clone Wars series (the animated one, no the CGI one) should be making this movie or they could make Warhammer 40k animated series, either way it would be better than than what this movie will become.
-
This is the greatest news ever! Bolt Thrower better do the soundtrack.
-
@TrapJaw --- Yep, that's the one. Thanks – perhaps I'll have my techpriest find a copy for me. Ever since I had to join the real world I still play but really don't pay nearly as much attention as I did back in the day. Probably because I don't get paid to pay attention to it any more.
-
Have you guys ever watched the intro movies for Dawn of War and DoW II done Blink studios? if they were to hire those boys the movie would rock bawlz!
-
Couldn't turn out any worse than Mutant Chronicles, right? Although, I didn't think Mutant Chronicles was as bad as alot of people made it out to be.
-
If it's going to be direct to DVD,there is a strong chance it may have as much ultraviolence as Hulk VS had with splattering blood, dismemberments and the whole lot.
-
I'm not really expecting this to be particularly good. The Space Marines in general are fun to play but there's never much going on in terms of story and personality. If you're going to make a 40K film go with the Imperial Guard, go with Gaunt's Ghosts or The Last Chancers...hell for my money just make a series of Ciaphas Cain films.
-
"A moment of laxity spawns a lifetime of heresy." This is why I remain pessimistic.
-
Given the Name Codex Pictures i wouldn't been surprised if it's a company started by GW. Games Workshop are notorious for doing stuff "in house". and that's the reason the games are doing well because GW doesn't do them.
-
I would love to see a movie about the horus heresy. The world eaters better be there.
-
Hope is the first step on the road of disappointment. Anyway as long as they have one of the Black Libary writers (best choose would be Graham McNeill writer of the Ultramarine novels) it will be fine
-
Wow, a massive 70 minute epic, I'm sure we'll get a good dose of action and story with that length...
-
I hope the Tau smear their zealot arses all over the silver screen. For the greater good! Oh, the irony...
-
Watch Shigurui if you believe that to the Japanese "grim=emo." Methinks you're watching too much shonen stuff. Shigurui is as grim as it gets. It is unrelenting in its violence, gore, cruelty, and insanity. There's only one sympathetic character in the entire piece, and she's driven out of her mind by the madness surrounding her. Methinks you're confusing "grim" with "nihilistic".
-
I really hope this doesn't suck.
-
Ehh, this might be interesting. The WH40K universe is OK but I don't understand the extent most of its fanboys wank over it, particularly the table-top players. I mean seriously, I've known guys with a huge % of their income devoted to building up their army...
-
@Khaine--The German 40K fan-film was called Damnatus. It too was about an Inquisitor and his retinue and it was pretty damn good for a fan-film. It's readily available on most torrent sites.
-
@meatballjones The Inquisitor short can be found on youtube if i remember correctly. Also seeing as it's a "sci-fi thriller" I'm speculating that there wont be any epic battles in the vein of the novels. Shame that GW don't seem to see how much a license to printmoney an animated, R rated version of the Horus Heresy would be to all their fans... IMO anyway.
-

It is unrelenting in its violence, gore, cruelty, and insanity. There's only one sympathetic character in the entire piece, and she's driven out of her mind by the madness surrounding her. Seriously, at one point the producers use a band of hard luck ronin to inject some sense into the action and they're promptly killed for pointing out that everyone at the dojo the story revolves around is mentally ill.
-
... Why the hell is the first thing everyone says "GIVE IT TO THE JAPANESE STUDIOS!" when an animated version of something is announced? Look at the proposed Halo anime. That looks like absolute garbage. I probably won't see this, just because I dislike Ultramarines and the Astartes(barring the Raven Guard) on principle as a longtime Guard player. But there's a big gap between Western properties with a grim aspect to them, and the Japanese who think grim=emo.
-
Give the property to Madhouse, tell them to make it boodier and grimmer than Shigurui.
-
I don't understand why GDW has to settle for some crap studio, it is not like Warhammer 40K isn't a major world product with a built in screaming nutty fan base. I would think they could do better then Codex studios. I would hope they could do better. Why not cut a deal with a Japanese studio and get some superior animation talent to do it?

Sorry, but if it A: has anything to do with the toolboxes that made that bionacle trailer above that alone makes it sheit. B: if the UK GW folks are overseeing it is will be dumbed down to the kiddie market - they never understood the US market a far older than the kids (trust me, I worked years in the US Studio). C: is about genetically engineered eunuchs (read: all Space Marines except for Emperors Children and perhaps Space Wolves) there can't really be any interesting characters. They follow orders, act cool until an Inquisitor shows up then they all crap themselves and cry in the corner. D: if it is to be done we need live action, hard R action, perhaps some SM show up in a fight but the characters need to be IG or an extreme Inquisitor - perhaps a witchhunter or something. As for the live action thing a long time ago I'm pretty sure it was called Inquisitor. Then a few years back there were some German guys making a rather promising movie - can't remember what that was called. But their in the works footage looked pretty decent. But there was severe irony to seeing IG officers speaking german.

Again with the f**king Ultramarines?? Is this to tie into the game coming out next year that is also about the Ultramarines?? There are far better legions to make movies on then the Ultramarines. As for who is making it, Bionicle was a piece of junk and the people who made that debacle is going to make this?? Why the hell would you not get the guys who made the insanely awesome Intro for Warhammer: Mark Of Chaos to do it?? That CG was and still is one of the best intros for any game ever!! And I agree with CTrees. If this isn't R rated, then it will suck and be nothing to the true nature of the Warhammer 40K universe!! What's the bet Orks will be the bad guys and have some stupid comedy moments?? As much as I want a Warhammer 40K movie, this has Epic Fail written all over it.
-
I am a long time 40k fan,(Fear my Ork Boyz!), I am having some reservations on this news. The 40k universe is bloody, violent, and just downright dark. More so if they bring Orks into the picture. Don't get me wrong, I'll go see it, I just don't have high hopes for it. Other note. I can't remember who made it, but there was a small 40K short done during the 80's. I saw it at a comic/game convention here in Houston. I was wondering if any one had a link to it. It wasn't CGI if I remember correctly.
-
70 minutes? Seems awfully short to me. Then again, depending on the final project, that might seem like an eternity.
-
Dear god no. io9, THAT trailer (@Terjay) and GW's pre teen poster boy army, it does not look like a good day for 40k fans...
-
Uuuummmm... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN_VH326Sls Yeah...
-
Since this film involves a Games Workshop product, I predict the following will happen: every year a new edition of the film will be released on DVD, with different content and no connection at all with previous versions. ;)
-
May you get what you wish for... *sigh*
-
Well...I didn't see that coming.
-
Oh my, if this is any good I might not need porn anymore
-
A FULL LENGTH...70 minute movie.
-
I hope the Tau smear their zealot arses all over the silver screen. For the greater good!
-
If it's rated less than R, it fails automatically. PG-13 Warhammer 40K would feel like that "Marvel" Super Heroes Squad... it just don't work. If the director/producer/etc. have some balls, though, there's a slim chance it could be awesome. Shame they didn't go for something like Catachan, Gaunt's Ghosts, or whatever instead of boring old space marines (probably versus orks...), but hey, whatever. This still leaves the (slim) chance it could be about the Horus Heresy, which would be incredible! I'd settle for the main opposition being 'nids or Chaos, though.
-
This is gonna suck.... Trust me-it'll either fall through the cracks like The other 40k movie (Bloodquest) or be watered down to all hell to appease the parents. This may...MAY be as bad as GI JOE.
-
As a huge Warhammer 40k fan, I'm excited to see what it's like, but then again . . . I see no major names in animation attached to it so, it'll probably be just so-so.
-
To be fair, it's not Warhammer 40,000: THE MOVIE. It's Space Marines(hur!): THE MOVIE.
-
everyone loves a bit of the ol' hyperviolence
